The will he stay, won't he stay discussion is moot. He's done. It's one thing if this guy wasn't already operating on a second chance. Greg deserved a second chance, Josh has already had his. Let's get a center for next year (JUCO, 5th year, frosh, whatever) and wash our hands of this. I was excited about this kid, but damn, I really wish we had gotten Tarik Black instead.

Because Whit definitively made our team better. Josh 1) Doesn't definitively make our team better next season, especially defensively 2) Was given the gift of all irrational gifts by the NCAA and screwed it up. He embarrassed III with this. Don't want him back. Move on I agree 100%. Move on.

Think we'd all take a much more in shape, motivated, academically eligible Josh Smith next year. But who could have any confidence that we'll see that?

You guys are crazy. If he can get eligible next by next year and get in shape, the more the merrier. I agree. The idea that we are better without him ignores the fact that we are really thin in the front court next year especially if Moses doesn't come back. Our offense was also clearly better with him as a high efficiency scoring option. At worst, it gives us more depth. Plus, Smith now has another 8 months to get in better shape. agree, the guy has talent and when he gets in shape and gets him self eligible again, he will be a huge asset to this team. I look forward to seeing a lean, mean Josh Smith breaking backboards at Kenner this summer

Absolutely. This isn't a "kid". He's a junior, probably 21 years old. Given every chance in the world by both the NCAA and Georgetown. Either he's the dumbest, laziest, or just plain most immature guy to ever put on a Hoya jersey. Let's cut the crap, revoke the scholarship and give it to a kid who deserves it.

I can see it now. An in shape, academically in order Josh rides into Midnight Madness on a Unicorn (a very large one).

JTIII doesn't sound real happy. Not sure what kind of internal discussions they are having now that this has happened two seasons in a row to two key players though. www.csnwashington.com/ncaa/jtiii-josh-smith-out-remainder-season"It's disappointing," Thompson said outside the team's practice court inside McDonough Arena. "So much was geared toward [Josh's] presence. Now here in the middle of the season, between him and Jabril, you lose two starters. You have to reshuffle everything. But this is Georgetown. We have a set of standards here. Everyone has a responsibility above and beyond what goes on those doors right there. He let his teammates down, but the rest of the group will try to regroup here and figure it out. Thompson said Smith will continue practicing with the team with hopes he will be eligible for the 2014-15 season.

Well it is a real shame. Having watched this kid for the past four years struggle against his demons, it is very disappointing to see this latest stumble. I hope that he can recover from this and realize his potential. However, it is apparent that his problems are not limited to size and conditioning. I do not blame JT III for taking a chance, particularly given the circumstances. Yet, before letting him return there should be some clearly defined expectations and goals. Unless the commitment between the kid and the school is mutual, it is just denying the team another scholarship player who might contribute.

Coincidentally, just this morning I wrote a Nodak-style cover of "Tuesday's Gone" called "Season's Gone." And then read this . . . . ugh.

We can debate this all we want (after all, that is what we do here!), but I trust JTIII on this one. If he believes that Joshua can straighten this out AND get (and keep) his academics in order AND drop enough additional weight to make him a factor at BOTH ends of the court, then he will be back. If he cannot do all of those things, then he will not be an asset.
A question to those that might know - what is the deadline for renewal of the annual scholarships the players get? I am thinking that JTIII could tell Josh that he has to show his commitment by getting down to a certain weight by that date in order to have his scholarship renewed(and of course do whatever is needed on the academic side). Not saying Coach would do that, just wondering about the date. Because I think we would all agree that unless he is in significantly better shape than he was this year, there would be too many minuses on the defensive end to balance out the pluses on the offensive end.

Some people wanted transparency and now they have it:
Outside of Josh Smith still being able to practice and being on the sidelines (everyone now knows the situation)
It does not look like the Hoyas will be recruiting a center for the 2014 class

Anyone who thinks we are a worse team on the court with Smith is a bit crazy at this point.
But that said, I don't know enough about the situation to know if he deserves another chance or if it is just better for the team as a whole to move on. It certainly sounds like JTIII is ready to move on.
Frazier -- they could legally pull his scholarship at any point before the school year starts (and I'm sure even during the school year, I think). However, for it to have any benefit for us, it would really have to be decided before the Spring signing period. After that, there's really no one to fill Josh's slot in '14-15 available, and his schollie was already slated for the next class, so there's no real benefit of getting the scholarship back.

Not to mention that as of this point, Josh has to regain eligibility, Moses has been here 4 years and will have to want to come back AND be asked back, and Hayes is a complete unknown in more ways than one. I would pretty much guarantee that if there is a useful big man out there. the staff will be evaluating him.

I think we need to show JT3 some love. He must have spent time with Smith getting to know him and getting a commitment to the school and the program. Yes he screwed us, the fans, his fellow teammates, and the University. But on a really personal level he stuck it to JT3.

The last thing this program needs is him hanging around. Time for all parties to shake hands and move on. He will continue to be a detriment going forward. Josh Smith has been around the program all semester...the only that has changed is that JTIII officially announced it was for "Academic Issues". This is not going to stop Josh Smith from practicing with the team or being on the sidelines for home games. He should not be allowed near our recruits from next year.
