This is disappointing news but not surprising. In the end it makes you wonder if Smith being able to play in October versus December was a detriment on the academic side. Regardless, I hope he's back next year because I think he would be valuable alongside the new recruits coming in.

Boot him. It was a gamble that didn't pay off. I'd rather have Moses as our starting C next year than a surly, overweight Josh Smith.

Why all the bitterness??
Greg Whittington was ruled ineligible last year and appeared to be welcomed back this year with open arms until being dismissed from the team...
Josh Smith was on the sidelines the last game cheering the team on as Greg Whittington did a year earlier.
I do not understand what is the difference with Josh Smith??
Why is not being welcomed back with open arms to be a part of the team in the fall??

Because Whit definitively made our team better.
Josh
1) Doesn't definitively make our team better next season, especially defensively
2) Was given the gift of all irrational gifts by the NCAA and screwed it up. He embarrassed III with this.
Don't want him back. Move on

You guys are crazy. If he can get eligible next by next year and get in shape, the more the merrier.

The idea that we are better without him ignores the fact that we are really thin in the front court next year especially if Moses doesn't come back. Our offense was also clearly better with him as a high efficiency scoring option. At worst, it gives us more depth. Plus, Smith now has another 8 months to get in better shape.

Guess who isn't going pro this year? At least that option is ruled out (although he could make an ill-fated attempt). If he comes back and drops another 30 to 50 pounds, with long athletic wings we could be alright and he would be a bridge to our next big. Good luck to him.

Sorry. I don't agree.
For his offensive gifts, we were a sieve defensively with him. And if we accept him back and build our offense around him again next season, what if he messes up again and leaves us in a lurch.
It will hurt us on the court, but I'd rather move on and wipe the slate clean. We are screwed for the rest of the season, and I don't want to count on the guy anymore

The last thing this program needs is him hanging around. Time for all parties to shake hands and move on. He will continue to be a detriment going forward.

You guys are crazy. If he can get eligible next by next year and get in shape, the more the merrier. A lean, mean and determined Josh Smith is obviously an incredible asset. I don't think anyone would debate that. What, in the history of Josh since his freshman year at UCLA, would lead you to believe that there is any significant likelihood Josh will be "in shape" by the time next year comes around. This is like his 4th chance...he wouldn't even qualify for the current "Biggest Loser: Second Chances" show. Whittington was different because he screwed up once and everyone accepted that people screw up and looked forward to seeing him back because he was a very promising young player with a bright future. Well, Whittington screwed up again. And he transferred. It is self-explanatory.

So let me get this straight. He wears out his welcome at UCLA. He accepts a scholarship to GU where he can "make a new start". He plays a few games and is obviously overweight, slow and a huge defensive liability. Despite what we all seem to agree is ample academic help from the University he punts his studies. He get suspended for the rest of the year leaving his teammates and coach with one less scholarship player. And we are supposed to feel for the guy because he sat on the bench and cheered? Good riddance.

I agree with those that say don't want him back. It was a gamble that didn't pay off. I'd bet he's done at GU.

Josh Smith has been around the program all semester...the only that has changed is that JTIII officially announced it was for "Academic Issues". This is not going to stop Josh Smith from practicing with the team or being on the sidelines for home games.

This is the worst thing for me. Josh was already here for a semester before the NCAA even ruled him eligible.
And he still flunked off.
I'm good on him.
