But, the point is, it's not baseless or wild speculation to assume he is missing games because he didnt do good in the class stuff. And, as others pointed out, I dont recall college being a place where you could remedy the class stuff in a week or two. I will gladly be wrong. Wait, an academic suspension means it's not baseless or wild speculation to say he didn't "do good in the class stuff." really going out on a limb there... If I had a dime for every incomplete resolved in the first few weeks of the following semester, or even potential Fs that were marked as Incomplete on the condition of getting some extra work in early the next semester, well, I would have a few dimes even off my own transcript:) They never said it was an academic suspension. That's the whole point. They said he was resolving an academic issue. This led some, including myself, to speculate that he probably isnt coming back since it was similar to the facts of Greg's situation (i.e., player misses games right at time grades are due for semester.) Others are saying that argument is baseless because all they said was that he was resolving an academic issues. The fact pattern you describe makes sense, but it doesnt mean that those who believe he is done for the year are making some crazy, out of left field judgment. I hope he comes back, but I dont have as much optimism.

No one doubts that the ultimate responsibility lies with the player. No one doubts that the program and staff try to keep the players on the right path. But I'm arguing that based upon back-to-back seasons of this stuff, the staff may have to consider working harder on that front. And that is not to say that Greg and Josh's issues are the same. I still contend that there was something other (or more) than academic problems going on with Greg last season (which reared its ugly head again this season). Regardless of that my main contention is that III owes the fans and supporters more information than "no comment" when it comes to whether a player will suit up again for a semester. If it is a done deal for Josh, as some here suggest, then I feel III should come out and say so. He doesn't have to provide further details, just let the public know if the guy's season has come to an end. But he clearly isn't done for the semester yet because if he was then JT3 would say something like he did last year with Greg. Prior to the 3rd game it was announced via ESPN, CBS and all the major outlets that Greg was done. If Joshua was also done it would be released. Clearly his status is still being determined as of the last contact with the press. The team should be meeting with the Media today. Either it will be announced Joshua is done or they will say as they have that he will miss the next game but his status for the year is still undecided. Logic doesn't work in these parts

Does anyone know if he is still practicing with the team? I assume so, but then with the road trip there has been limited practice in D.C. Obviously, this kid cannot afford a prolonged period of inactivity. He needs to be running everyday. Yes he's still practicing

Not really. Check last season's thread. III was never definitive if Greg would be back that semester. To the media he either said "no comment" or appeared to leave the door open. We had guys in the media and even on this board holding out for the possibility up to the NCAA tournament that Greg would suit up again. That is how inconclusive III's statements were. There were a few posters on HT and a couple of guys in the media who mentioned that according to their sources Greg was gone for the remainder of the season. But there was never anything definitive from III on that front. And if we don't get anything definiive this weekend regarding Smith, expext the same guessing games to go on again.

You are right to an extent they never said he was done for the year but there is a differnence in the statement about Greg and those about joshua. About Greg they said: "“Greg will not participate in competition until further notice due to an eligibility issue,” the school said in a statement." vs. saying Josh is dealing with an academic issue. They have never used the word eligibility when talking about Josh.

Hoping it changes but I hear he might be done for the year. Sorry I hadn't read it carefully. I wasn't accusing you of forgetting that history, I was simply adding to the context (again, without realizing you'd already written it!). My fault!

The update on Joshua Smith is....no update:
Gene Wang @gene_wang 18m JTIII: No updates on Joshua Smith or Jabril Trawick. Smith is practicing though. #Hoyas
Strangely, I feel that may be a good sign.

No need to rely on tweets: you can watch/listen to JTIII answer the questions in the pre-game media session linked in the articles thread.

Whittington was still practicing with the team last year too. Also, with Monday being a holiday, I don't see Smith being eligible for the Marquette game either since the school isn't open through the long weekend.... unless this punishment has nothing to do with official school policy and is just JT3's personal decision.... As for Jabril, would it be too much to ask from this program to do what nearly every other school or team in the country does -- with the exception of the equally insular Wizards -- which is at least give a general timeline on the injury? Just saying he's out for 4-8 weeks would stop the incessant speculation.

Word on the Gtown street is that he's done for the year. Probably expected at this point... Kid gets a waiver in which he basically gets an extra semester of college basketball and he might have blown it. Unreal.

Logic doesn't work in these parts This from the two who were basically driving the "Whittington could still return this semester" bandwagon well into February. That Greg Whittington bus was still being driven all up to the tip off of the FGCU in March Madness last year.
