Unless something has drastically changed since I was an undergrad, grades at Georgetown don't improve in a couple of weeks. Yes. This. Honestly, I dont want to be the school that somehow resolves academic issues in a couple of weeks. Either you have the grades at grade time, or you dont. I guess I can hold out hope that he misplaced something or whatever. I will leave it at that. 123 Fireballs!

IMO Josh's body language was very poor in the last few games. I don't think he's coming back this year, if at all. Sorry to be so negative but I've been worred about this the last few games - I thought something was up. BTW he looks like he gained weight over the break. Can't tell if trolling the whole board or not........

Can't tell if trolling the whole board or not........ I don't think Big Elephant is making a trolling comment there. I have to agree that he looked like he gained weight after break and you could read into his body/facial language that something was definitely wrong outside of the fact that he was just fatigued. Have spoken to many a Gtown fans about this at the FIU and Depaul games that agree as well. He had a worried look on his face. Feel free to disagree and offer a counter point rather than calling people trolls. We can all hope that this is a quick thing. It's probably in his best interest to step away from basketball and maybe even school to work some things out so that he can proceed with a healthy and happy life. I wish the big fella the best.

A cheerful Joshua opened up his lap top during Organic Chemistry class and was browsing hoyatalk when he stumbled across all the negative messages throwing him under the bus and calling him a useless non D1 player. He took off his glasses in disbelief, wiped a tear, and became very sad. Watching his body language and facial language during class one could see that he was very distressed and worried about the hateful comments by some on hoyatalk and lost interest in his organic chemistry class and academics causing him to miss the Providence game.

The break i was referring to is the week long break after the KU game. You know, the time you go home for Christmas and stuff your face. I'm not offering any advice or would even attempt to speculate what is going on in Josh's head. Just making an observation many fans have had that you could tell something was up with him as of the FIU game on Dec 28. You could see a noticeable difference in how he carried himself. That is all. have a nice day.

Just making an observation many fans have had that you could tell something was up with him as of the FIU game on Dec 28. You could see a noticeable difference in how he carried himself. That is all. have a nice day. Not trying to pick a fight, but I have to disagree with the assumptions being made here. 1) do we know Josh went back to WA for Christmas? And even if the break was 7 days long (which it couldn't be given that they had to practice before FIU), we know all he did was eat bon-bons and get absolutely no exercise at all? Played no basketball, did no drills (despite how badly he needs to make the most of this opportunity)? Ate so much that he had noticeable weight gain (BTW, I did not notice weight gain.)? Sorry, I don't see this. I may be wrong. 2) he maybe needs some time away from basketball and school? This assumes that the young man has issues he needs to work out. So the best thing is for him to step away from a structured environment? Again, there is a history of poor nutritional and fitness issues, but he certainly is in better shape than when he started here. I think assumptions are being made about his state of mind that are not warranted, unless people know something the Board doesn't. 3) he did not play well vs. DePaul (FIU was over so early that we didn't need him as much), and III went out of his way in public comments to let him know the team had other options if there was not max effort. Maybe III meant off as well as on the court, maybe not, I don't know. The grades should have been in then, but I am not sure. But even if III was sending a message for Josh both on and off the court, how do we explain the St. John's game? I would argue it was his second best game all year (after Korea). He was active on both ends, particularly on the defensive end, looking much more effective. He missed some bunnies, but I think the effort was there. So can't we also assume he hasn't packed it in? Maybe he just bombed a final. Maybe he doesn't care. I don't know. But I don't think the kid just waltzes through what is probably his last shot at getting truly prepared for a career as a professional athlete, where he could make millions of dollars. Why come all the way out here if he was going to go through the motions? I hope he is able to rectify the issue and get back on the court. We are a better team with him, and he is better off playing for Georgetown than not. I hope the Josh Smith era at Georgetown continues.

I'm not sure what's more ludicrous, trying to gauge over TV whether a 320 lb kid has gained a few pounds, or speculating on Josh's future based on changes in his body language. I think it has to be the latter. Let's say he knows he's getting suspended. Even if it was for a game or two, wouldn't he look upset. Is there some goldilocks level of upset where you can tell that he's not just upset he's getting suspended (or having academic problems), but that he knows he's not coming back for the year?
Ultimately, this might be the last game he ever plays for us, and you might end up being right. But you can't get from point A to point B with body language. Then again, it's always easier to take the pessimistic view.

We are a better team with him, and he is better off playing for Georgetown than not. I hope the Josh Smith era at Georgetown continues. I knew I should have completely stayed away from this thread. I am not making any assumptions or speculations about what is going on with Josh. None. Zip. Zero. I made a simple observation that he didn't look good out there. I'm not a professional body linguist nor am I a gym rat nutritionist. I am a fairly emotionally intelligent person who can look at someone's face and tell they aren't having a good day. I go to, watch, and re-watch almost every Georgetown game because I am a huge fan. I was pumped to see Josh at Kenner this summer and I want him around now or next year. He doesn't seem to be an over smily person, but he will crack a smile here and there. I just thought he didn't look good or happy in FIU and DePaul games. Please don't read anything else into it. My comment about stepping away from School or Basketball for a little while could be read into, I understand, but don't. I just want the kid to be happy. Basketball is a game that should be played with fun and joy. So is College for that matter. It just did not look like he was having fun at those points in time. Probably not related to what is holding him out, but several people said it and sensed it over those days (with zero inside knowledge might I add) so I thought I would back up a board member who was getting called a troll.

For what it's worth, when I was sitting low in 102 for the SJU game, Smith looked about the same (weight-wise) as he did when I saw him play in the Booth earlier in the season. Sure, he looked frustrated, but I have a hard time imputing motivation level or mindset in a 19-20 yr-old from that kind of observation.

Bummer about Josh but I have to say, I have been sitting here laughing out loud at this thread. Little Debbie? LO frickin L. Love the revisiting of the body language, as well. Always brings me back to Dajuan Summers' unsmiling demeanor. Keep it up, guys and gals. GO FOT IT!

It's just like some hoyatalkers to make up "observations" and come to conclusion about someone's whole life by how they looked when they woke up on Monday morning

If this weren't the HoyaTalk board, I would say that the B.S. I have read in this thread is unbelievable. But this is the HoyaTalk board. As rock has pointed out, some of the "advice", "observations", and "conclusions" spouted here are ridiculous. IMO.

Hope the Whittington debacle is a bit of an eye opener to him. Not that his previous experiences shouldn't have been but I wonder how much learning and growing he is prepared to undertake. Just my opinion... It's this kind of thing that makes me want to go back in time and pummel the crap out of the person who coined the phrase "Well, everyone's entitled to their own opinion." And others are entitled to more info than others.
