I've been just plain WRONG about so many things this year - I hate to say it but - the fact that Georgetown and III is in on it gives me hope.

I don't think they would have a big announcement if he were coming back. I think III was there when Jeff/Roy had their press conference that they were leaving. I am a little surprised they are having a conference at all though since they haven't had one since then, but I guess because he is high profile now? Excited to have another team in the NBA to watch and reason to watch the draft this year.

It seems very few press conferences result in the player coming back

He's making the right move. Just think of all the talent that has left Gtown early in recent history and yet every year the Hoyas still make us fans proud. That special year is around the corner.

We should all be happy he gave us two great years and is going to be a top 5 pick in this year's draft.

They did have a joint press conference for both Jeff and Roy in the lobby of McDonough. Somehow I actually snuck in for that one. It makes sense for them to have a press conference for this. He is likely going top 5 in the draft and this is good publicity for the team and school. He is making the right move and if most of us were given this opportunity we would make the same decision. The NBA may not be there forever but Georgetown will be. He can certainly return and finish his degree when the time is right and from what we know about him and his family it would not be surprising to see hime do so. Good luck to him.

Not related to Otto but people say this a lot and I've always wondered, how long can a player come back and finish their degree after they leave? I know guys can do it over a period of time but how long of a break without picking up credits do you have before credits expire or you can't enroll in classes at Georgetown? Could say, Victor Page, had he left in good academic standing, just come back and start classes again to finish his degree? Would there be some reapplication process or can any player that played at Georgetown just come back and finish their degree? Just always wondered.

I have a friend for whom this was a consideration, not a basketball star.

Since I'm probably one of the oldest posters on this board (SFS '68) let me give you the geezer perspective on Otto's leaving early. Last year I met Sleepy Floyd at a charity event. In fact it's why I went to the event. Obviously I wanted to talk to him about his basketball experiences and we did enjoy rehashing some great games. But we also talked about his 4 years on the Hilltop, how he tries to attend class reunions and see not just his teammates but also his classmates, and how his son attends GU. In short I was talking to a fellow alumni not just a former GU basketball player. I realized later that I could never have the same conversation with Allen Iverson or Greg Monroe. Maybe you younger folks have come to terms with the idea of one or two and done (and don't give me the "he can always come back and get his degree" bull) but I just wonder how much a final four or national championship is worth. As I write this I am hoping that at 3:00pm Otto Porter says something along the lines of, "I came to Georgetown not just to play basketball but to get an education. Therefore my parents and I have decided that I will come back to school for my Junior year and if, after next year, the NBA still wants me I will work out an arrangement like Jeff Green to both play in the NBA and complete my degree requirements. Yes I am turning down some big bucks but 2 years ago I would never have dreamed of being in this position and feel that I owe it to my school and teammates to continue the educational journey I began then. Thank you and HOYA SAXA!"

I'm guessing David Falk will be there too. Thanks for the BE regular season championship, an unbelievable game at Syracuse this year and some other really great regular season performances in 2 short years. However, I think the debate over "who was a better Hoya, Otto or Jeff?" can end now. It's not even close.

Dare to dream profquigley, but no one left early when Sleepy was in school, and the money wasn't the same. If my child had the opportunity to with one decision, totally change his life trajectory, make enough money to not have to really worry about money ever again, and could potentially risk that by coming back to school and getting hurt, I wouldn't dream of telling him to stay. Georgetown is forever. The NBA is not. And I can only assume that for a 6'8" kid from anywhere in America, playing in the NBA has been his life's dream. College is supposed to give kids the tools to pursue their dreams. For most of us, staying four years and graduating is required. Not for Otto. I know you're not judging him Prof, but this is Otto's opportunity and he should take it.

Ah, well.
Thanks for two great years, Otto. Best of luck to you in the draft and in your NBA career. While I will miss seeing you in a Hoya uniform, I will look forward to seeing you excel in another one at the next level.
(I am also hopeful that you will make plans to finish your degree over the next few years.)
