Look at Greg Olden. He was hurt half of his freshman year, came out, got #1 money and really didn't play much because he was injury prone. If he would have stayed at OSU, his wallet would be empty. Otto has to take the sure thing.

I realize this is obvious, but for all the talk about college, winning championships, maturity, etc., at the end of the day the most important factor for a lot of guys is money. Granted, I realize that staying in college another year (like Hibbert) might improve your chances of getting a better second contract, etc., but I think that's more important to the questionable recruits who might go lower in the first round or those who may not get drafted at all (like Hollis Thompson). If Otto Porter gets drafted, he's almost certain to get about $2,812,000 his first year, $2,938,700 his second year, and even more in years following, assuming he stays in the league (very likely, in my opinion). Imagine if somebody was offering you a guaranteed $6,000,000. It would be pretty hard to walk away from for another year of college! As I said, I don't think this is true for people who are questionable first round draft picks or those who might not even get into the NBA, but for somebody like Porter, it would be extremely difficult to turn down all that money, especially considering you never know for sure if it will be there the following year. The thing is someone like Tim Duncan or Hibbert can take their time because just based on superior height and wingspan they will be drafted in the mid to high first round whenever they come out. Also, there's less of a chance of injury compared to a swingman or forward because they don't take the wear and tear and pounding and aren't jumping as high or as much which increases the probability of landing awkwardly. Staying can give them a chance to develop their game more, especially in the right big man program. With guards and swingman like Otto, injury is more of a concern and any drop in production will make them slide down the draft if they stay. As far as education goes. These guys can always get their degree or go back to college after or during their pro days like alot of pros have done. So really for the blue chip prospects you are just staying for a shot at the national championship and to enjoy the college life rather than for a financial or educational reasons.

Oden, bones hadn't matured, one more year at OSD, and the injury he got the next year, if he was still in college,he might not have been a top pick. As it was he was #1, Kevin was # 2 and Jeff # 5. Both made it in the pros.

If the goal of Georgetown is to educate it's players, they have failed miserably if they haven't done enough to make Otto realize he needs to go.

Are there any examples of consensus likely top 5 picks coming back to school, like, ever? If so, did those people improve or even maintain their draft stock?

Where do you keep getting that he's a consensus top 5? I don't really buy that anyone knows, but I have seen various draft projections that have him right at 5, and several that have him below. With having to declare so early and without having any of the camps or team workouts, I don't think anyone knows who the top 5 will be outside of the top two or three. I don't think it matters. Whether he's the 5th pick or the 8th pick, he'll still make a lot of money. So that's not really the point. If he wants to go to the NBA now, he'll go. Just that it's not a given that he'll go as high as you keep insisting.

Harrison Barnes. Actually I feel like most of UNC's players usually stay in situations where 99% of players would leave. Not all top five but how many lottery picks have they had stay an extra year or even two?

After workouts and camps I expect him to drop a bit because he really hid is flaws well this year. This is unrelated to Porter but how unfair is it for the players that they have taken away their ability to test the waters? This is a huge decision for most of players debating entering and its that much more difficult to make an informed decision.
