They weren't in any way holding the conference together, because they don't have football. Nobody cares about them in basketball. This doesn't meaningfully change the complexion of the basketball Big East, but would have if another shoe (UConn, Nova) was going to drop. There are no moves left people. The most important thing now is that UConn manage the transition from Calhoun and stay elite in hoops. That keeps us locked on the NYC market, which is all that matters in the end.

they have no reason to add a non-football school. They'll bide time until ND joins in all sports and then add another program to move to 16. That is the only thing that makes sense at this point. If they added us or Nova, they are then stuck in 2015 when ND is looking for a major bowl tie-in.

I just don't see the current athletic department/university leadership having the ability to manage a move to the ACC. If Paul Tagliabue was completely in charge, I'd have a lot more confidence. But my guess is we don't see any proactive, daring moves from the guys currently running things. We'll likely go down with the ship, if it is in fact going to sink.

... The Big East conference started dying a slow, painful death when BC and Miami left years ago. ... That is about as classic a line as you will get around here. Hall of Fame material, there.

The most important thing now is that UConn manage the transition from Calhoun and stay elite in hoops. That keeps us locked on the NYC market, which is all that matters in the end. Losing ND is still significant because they were one of the few teams left that still put asses in seats at Verizon and that was worth televising (Georgetown/ND was definitely Big Monday-worthy in the past and was even CBS worthy). We've already lost several teams who could help fill Verizon in Cuse, Pitt and WVU. Once those 3 and ND go the only home league games that will draw well are Louisville, UConn and Villanova. At times one of of the old C-USA teams may be good enough to generate some buzz (Memphis, Marquette) but the number of reliable draws continues to dwindle, which is a bad sign when we're paying to play in a 20K seat stadium. As far as the moves being over... The other announcement today was that the ACC will raise exit fee to $50 Million. Pretty much assures none of their members are going anywhere. Big 10 COULD still expand though, but more likely is the B12 expanding at some point. They still have only 10 members and it has seemed for some time that they'd try to get to 12 and a championship game before they negotiated their next tv deal. With ACC teams like Clemson and FSU apparently off the table, if the Big 12 does expand it's almost a lock they're taking Louisville. Memphis (if football improves), USF, Cinci would probably be considered for the second spot for geographic reasons.... And/Or, they might look to make a northeastern push with Rutgers/UConn. Sounds crazy geographically but if the BE can be in Texas for all sports, the Big 12 can be in NJ/Conn. I feel like if the BE loses UConn and/or Louisville it's pretty much game over for us. Along with us and maybe Nova, they're the last vestiges of a once great basketball conference.

At least the BE Coach of the Year will be back up for grabs No, they'll just stop giving it out and instead hold a Mike Brey memorial ceremony each year. Ties will be optional.

We need to join the ACC in non-football sports now. It's time. I said it over a year ago and I'm saying it now - DITTO

This is REALLY BAD NEWS! How can GU be so out of it? Then again being out of it is a way of life for Georgetown for many years - as we have missed multiple opportunities is so many areas not just athletics.

I'm perplexed by anyone who tries to down play the significance of losing Notre Dame to the ACC.

Abra-cadabra, we go to the ACC, say we want to join and POOF it happens? What dream world are you guys living in? We don't play BCS football and we don't add a TV market that they don't have already!

If Notre Dame football doesn't join the ACC when their NBC contract is over, this would be a strange move for the ACC.

Maybe now the Hoyas will start winning some BE track and field championships (oh, I forgot we don't have a field team). But I expect some indoor championships, because that is skewed towards middle distances.
Also, the BE should charge ND a $50 million exit fee. Why? Because they are so special; always have been.
What happened to the competitive market in this country? It is all about takeovers now. Part of the reason why the country is in such dire straits.

Then again being out of it is a way of life for Georgetown for many years - as we have missed multiple opportunities is so many areas not just athletics. Elephant, why does this mean GU was "out of it"? This is certainly something that has been in the works for months, and it is possible that Gu and the rest of the Big East were aware of it - but what were we supposed to do about it? Understand that this was about football, and nothing else; the ACC at a minimum gets 5 games a year with ND that the BIG10/11 was gettign, and undoubtedly hopes they can convince ND to join for football as well at some point. Those who think we could have had anything to say about any of this are overreacting.
