Non-Conference Scheduling 2012-13

Andy Katz's recent article on non-conference scheduling is a good introduction to this question: who is Georgetown likely to schedule as regular non-conference opponents going forward?

Two past non-conference opponents are now within the conference (Temple, Memphis). The A-10 goes to 16 and with schools like Butler and VCU scheduled to play GW every year, a second game in Washington may not be as desirable. It's also likely that, much like BC, Big East expatriates will not be scheduled further, and Maryland is off the list by by Kevin Anderson's fiat.

Earlier in the JT III era, there were some interesting matchups with the likes of Illinois, Vanderbilt, Michigan, Oregon, even Old Dominion. Who are some reasonable teams that Georgetown could/would sign a home and home with, given a) national TV interest, b) Verizon Center availability, and c) RPI?

Kentucky and Indiana already play Big East teams, so Georgetown isn't as strong a sell to TV. I'm not sure Georgia Tech is a compelling game but it might be in the mix, but, sure, KU would be a great addition (as would K-State or Missouri.) All of these scenarios are probably impacted by NBA and NHL scheduling which makes Verizon a tough sell.

Here are three more that might also work for markets not served by the new Big East footprint:

1. Stanford (Pac12)
2. LSU (SEC)
3. Michigan State (BiG 10)

And here's a vote for George Mason at some point--there's no animus along the lines of UMd or GW, and the Patriot Center is large enough and within driving distance for many fans for a home and home. A low cost, moderate visibility game. (I'd even go back to ODU--a great on campus arena and a solid fan base.)

FWIW, Georgetown has played GMU only once, a road game in Fairfax in Dec. 1985; however, I don't think GU has to play the "Gary Williams card" and demand a home game first in return.

I've been wanting non-conference games with the above for a while, especially Carolina.

Yes, I would support another UCLA series. Although the last time, I got to watch the Bruins blow us off the court at Pauley. As bad as Lavin was, he still beat Esh.

start by scheduling every team we have a losing record against (http://www.hoyabasketball.com/opponents.htm), regardless of the rpi hit we take for playing Carnegie Melon four times or Navy for the next 20 years it will be worth it to eventually be able say that we have a winning record against everyone.
not all of them will be rpi hits though, we have losing records against xavier, manhattan, ohio state, nc state and some others that would be good games.

we should keep playing cuse regardless of when we move ahead of them in the all time series

due to the bad blood after the ucla series making that one more difficult to workout, then i think we should play Loyola Marymount or USC - and not just so i can see a regular season game in person but we have a big alumni base out west and a lot of potential recruits.

regional rivals like ODU, JMU, & Virginia would be cool so the locals and students can do a road trip to away games and the team doesnt have to miss as much class.

GMU fans ARE noxious and would easily see Georgetown basketball as their peer program. Could we even get any GU fans to trek out to the Patriot Center to watch the game?

I am always in agreement with tgo's suggestion to hack through D-1 teams on the biggest loser list over the next 20 years. USNA has merits on its own, however, and Alumni Hall ought always be remembered as the venue for Roy Hibbert's coming out party.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Vandy yet.

Harvard's a great call, especially if the powers that be can leverage a home-and-home arrangement for football as well.

UCLA would be ideal for west coast exposure, though a series with UNLV, Arizona, Stanford, Cal, Washington would be hard to turn down.

If we could guarantee a game that would earn us the lasting enmity (with grudging respect of course) of BYU forever, I would say snatch that up in a heartbeat.

On the longer list, load up on the teams in less interesting locations but stand a good chance of winning their conference and will look like respectable wins more often than not: Utah State, Wichita State, Northern Iowa, Creighton, St Mary's, Bradley, So Ill, Tulsa, Dayton, etc.

If we're talking about the non-conference cupcakes like Jacksonville and NJIT, I always thought it would be better to target schools with larger and wealthier DC alum communities, but whose fans would be fairly sedated (thinking the Ivys, Fordham, BU, etc.) They ain't beating us and we should get a better gate than IUPUI.

As for the resume builders, SDSU, UNLV, UCLA all make sense for the exposure, Texas and UK too, but I'd really love to watch Duke and Kansas come to Verizon.
