Here's my major concern: foul trouble.
In ten games, foul trouble has never been a major issue--Hoyas got 31+ minutes from four starters and platooned Lubick/Porter for as many. But can Trawick stare down the PG's of the league if Starks has to sit? Who is the backup in the two for Clark? Who exactly is the backup center if Sims gets two quick fouls in the first five minutes, Hopkins?
The bench has done no harm but outside of Porter hasn't become a force, either, and that premise will be tested at Louisville.

I believe we are 10-1 after OOC despite what is says on the front of Hoyasaxa.com. Agree that the defense and rebouinding are better. I think Porter has a lot to do with both even if his stat line doesn't always show it. He boxes out well and chases down balls which sometimes end up in the hands of Hollis or Jason. I used to say a loose ball in a Georgetown ball. In the old days our guys would always dive for the ball on the floor and get the possession. I feel that element of the game has come back with this team. Hollis, Jason, Henry and Markel are all playing well heading into the Big East season. Can they hold up for that many minutes and shoot consistently is the question. Henry looked pretty tired at the end of the game last night and we really don't have another center to back him up. I wonder too if Mikael could get a few spot minutes to assist the front court rotation if only to give the other guys a breather. Sims just couldn't buy a bucket for stretches last night. I'm sure that dunk felt good taking off from the G in Big East and drilling it home. What a great momentum changer heading into the half. I felt badly for Greg last night as the refs seemed to have it in for him and forced JTII to bench him. Jabril looks solid on defense. I hope his offensive game will come as he gets more time in the system. The next four games will tell us if we are for real or not. I expect to see a lot of zone much more physical play. But the more I see them play, the more I think this team is ready for the challenge.

Someone asked about the commentators' reaction to the two significant calls.
On the Whittington call they initially said they didn't think it should be a flagrant. Then, on the replay, they decided that yes, it was within the letter of the rules on flagrant fouls, and thus praised* the officials for making the right call (although I got the sense they may have disagreed with the rule).
On the Pastner play, they initially said they thought Whittington was out of bounds, and it should be Memphis basketball. Then, when the replay showed that Pastner had BOTH FEET in the playing area, they had to retreat from that. When Cahill et al. chose to give a warning instead of a technical, they praised the officials for not resorting to an unnecessary technical.
*Praise might be a strong word here, but I can't think of a better one at the moment.

As a longtime detractor of all things Pastner, anyone want to take a bet that he didn't know that being on floor/making contact with an opposing player during game action is a rules violation? Also for those that know of how Pastner operates, anyone want to bet Pastner keeping team in seclusion after the game wasn't his idea? They had it out and a come to "Dana Kirk" meeting. He's a moron and that program went from being one of the top programs in country to a glorified AAU team with goofy uniforms, and a guy whose idea of coaching is to say things like "play tough guys....", "need you to step up",,,,he's in over his head and has NEVER lived up to the false hype that has been placed upon him by media.

I believe the Whittington play was actually called correctly. Greg spun, hit the defenders face with his left shoulder and his elbow swung, missing the defender's face barely. The defender had basically thrown his face into Whittington's shoulder.
That said, i think they ibstituted an nfl-style rule that basically prohibits contact with a shoulder or elbow above the head regardless of intent.
The Pastner non call was ridiculous. And so were most of the calls in this game.

Isn't Cahilll the worst ref Georgetown routinely faces? He takes some sort of twisted joy in making simple calls complex. He also loves to call any close Charge/Block play a charge. It works both ways and at least he is consistent about it.
But the flagrant 1 was a joke. Even if that is the rule, I did not think the contact warranted any call, the practical issue is the elbow is what matters and it never contacted Barton's face. They need to remove or re-write that rule immediately. Why reward a defensive player that plays defense with his face? Concussions are not a big issue in college bball, why draw up rules that make the game worse?
The Pastner call was obvious and how is that not a technical? I did not realize that was a judgement call for the refs.
All in all, I agree with everyone that Pastner is in over his head. I was not ready to admit it until last night, Memphis has gotten worse and their gameplan was weak.

Anyone remember the officiating forum website? I think it can into play with the whole Jeff Green v. Vandy non-travel call.

The only problem I had with the Whittington call was that the play STARTED with the defender applying his face to Whittington's shoulder. Whittington tried to make a basketball move and got called for a technical which might have been within the rule description but was mighty weak.
Not giving Pastner a T for interfering with play is unacceptable.
The problem I had with McDonough and Raftery is that they seemed to disagree initially with both calls, then fell back on the strained rules interpretation for the T, all the while saying that these refs are "among the BEST in the country" as if that legitimizes things. I thought Raftery had more backbone, but he let McD wash over him.
By the way, Karl Hess gives Cahill a run for his money as the worst ref the Hoyas see on a regular basis.

Give credit to W. Barton for doing a Duke/Italian soccer-like acting job and getting the refs to buy it.

Coming into the season, many thought Markel would struggle, based on last years performance.
But those of us who saw him routinely in high school are not surprised with what he's doing. In fact, he can do MUCH MORE.
This is the guy we all saw at Georgetown prep, the guy we all thought was better than Kendall Marshall and Tyler Thornton.
There was a comment on the last page saying that Markel didn't have an extra gear. Couldn't disagree with that more. Kid can flat out get to the basket, and his jumper opens up his game off the dribble.
For as much as I loved Chris Wright, Markel has an explosion off the dribble that Chris never had. And when he gets there, he has a floater, which Chris never developed. Had he developed it, Chris Wright may very well be playing in the NBA right now.
Going to be interesting seeing Markel for two more seasons. I fully expect him to be a borderline superstar next year, as he will know that the backcourt is all his

I believe we are 10-1 after OOC despite what is says on the front of Hoyasaxa.com. We are 9-1 because Chaminade is a DII team. No biggie, but that's the distinction.

Yeah, I thought that comment on Markel was odd. I remember Bilas being quite impressed with Markel in the Kansas game - saying he could get anywhere he wanted to with his dribble.

I echo Daytona's sentiments re: Markel. We are all (rightfully so) caught up in the strides that Henry has made, but Markel has been truly great this year. He shows so much maturity on the floor--almost as if he is a senior leader. That pass to Otto last night was pretty damn nice. He is also so unselfish and picks his spots. I was definitely someone who was worried about Markel -- precisely because all I ever saw of him was his frosh year -- but I read the posts of certain people on this board saying Markel would be fine, and they are completely right. An amazing transition from his frosh to soph year. Kid looks great and is well beyond his years.

Chaminade was not an exhibition game. We have played 11 NCAA-sanctioned games for 40+ minutes and have had a higher score at the end of ten than our opponents did. The win just doesn't count in the RPI calculations or in the eyes of the selection committee come March.

Also, his response to Raf's coment about watching the UNC-TX game (I think) at 3:30am was hilarious: "You were just getting home?"
