Yeah i guess i'm just paranoid after the way it's being painted everywhere. Seeing anything that doesn't 100% absolve the Hoyas means the same story that's already out there is going to persist in my opinion. I just saw too many things that people could twist to say the Hoyas started it.
I would've like him to state that the foul totals were out of whack because of the refs not that the game was marred by fouls with Georgetown having many more than the chinese team and stating near that the end that it started with Nate lubick exchanging words with a chinese player. I'm sure it was deserved but it reads that we got in their faces first. And moses grabbing a chair is not a good image nor the one of players on both teams tackling each other.

I don't think the WPost report paints the team in a negative light. But the whole bit about Moses (if it was him) grabbing a chair is not a good thing even if he was only defending himself. Heck, the tool on ESPN 980 just left the air with a teaser that went something like "when we come back I'll tell you which Hoya walked onto the court with a chair." OH NO! If ESPN 980 turns against the Hoyas on this, we may as well shut down the program--a self-instituted death penalty. That station's six listeners (7 if you count MCI) are hugely influential.

Why the obsession about how the media is going to play this out? Everyone knows how JT3 runs things and if they read the Wash Post article, the boys were getting completely jobbed. Again, one of their players literally stood in front of our head coach and "berated" him. Hello? Could you imagine that happening anywhere in college basketball and just be passed off as good old sportsmanship? Of course not, and no unbiased fan will view this as the Hoyas initiating a brawl in China as they left the court to a chorus boos, filled water bottles and thrown chairs. People with agendas will always have those agendas, but give the rest of the public a little credit.

Precisely dear lad! Why do you people think this is a bad thing? I have zero problem with how we reacted. If an opposing player approaches my coach, I'm going to react. If my team is getting hammered, and people are throwing things at me in the stands, I have to defend myself. Some of the turn the other cheek and this is bad for the program opinions on this thread are from the same people who have killed our team for being passive in the past. This is basketball. It's ugly to say, but sometimes things like this happen. If somebody swings on me, you best bet Im going to swing right back on that person. And that Washington Post story, very well written I may add, doesn't paint us in a bad light in the least. Things got heated, we defended ourselves and our physical safety. None of the players on this team had shown to be anything but gentlemen in the past. So I'm completely willing to give my Hoyas a mulligan on this one.

Here's the real problem: you get one of these international trips every few years and we really needed these games for an unproven team and bunch of new players. Now, either the remaining games will be canceled or everyone will be so uptight that they won't be very good real game experience. What a waste. If being an unwelcome stranger in a strange land doesn't bond this team together like glue, nothing will. And how could a team be rattled by 40,000 drunk carnies at the Carrier Dome or 19,000 screaming fat illiterates at the Bradley Center after they've survived this?

This isn't a good story. It's a shame for all involved. But let's not go overboard with the rending of garments. No one was injured (so far as we've heard). Yeah, the players got into it, but it happens at every level whether it's an exhibition or not. The fans getting involved makes it a whole lot uglier, but that wasn't our doing. JT3 did the right thing pulling the guys off the floor before anything else could happen. I bet cooler tempers prevail and we play the rest of the schedule without incident.

Please, I'm willing to bet that the team, as soon as coach is not within ear shot and they are by themselves, will be joking about this one. The ability of 18-20 year olds to bounce back is strong indeed

Actually ESPN 980 doesn't have to turn against the Hoyas because it is already overflowing with Terp apologists. But my point was in how this story was being portrayed by the media. The tool on ESPN 980 has been taking Gtown's side and taking some shots at China as a nation, but still he felt the need to give that uncalled for teaser. Then again it should be pointed out he is a Syracuse grad.

That statement is never going to come in a sports-section style piece. As a reporter, he isn't going to interject his opinion about whether the referees were out of whack unless he has statements to back them up. Honestly, I'm happier that he doesn't have those statements, because they would have had to come from JT3/Hoyas staff. If we were to give those statements, it would make us look petty. Instead, we have come off looking officially as classy as possible. The blogosphere is really shaping the opinion of the story at its outset. The major sources of blog-based coverage (Deadspin, Steinberg, Casual, and even Nunes) have been running with the HoyaTalk story on page 2 of this thread. That piece gives you the statement of events that you want to see. Thus, I don't really see a problem with the WaPo write-up.

Not that it matters as that station has no influence, but it should be comical as he paints Hoyas as bad guys against the commies in the white hats.

yeesh the washington post report does not paint us in a good light. Was hoping it would vindicate us but instead muddles the issue more. Especially because they seem to be mixing up tyler adams and Moses Ayegba based on their different injuries. We're not going to come out looking good here or even neutral. This is bad. How so? We get the story of the Chinese security failing to protect the foreign guests, two anecdotes about the Rockets players being thuggish during the game, Henry getting a chair thrown at him, and JT3 has the final word in a carefully crafted and diplomatic statement. People looking for a reason to snark or hate on Georgetown will light up, but sticks and stones and all that. The Hoyas aren't trying to win an election, we'll be fine Or should it be "chairs and water bottles" Agree with this. People looking for a reason to get on us will focus on a detail here or there and paint us as "thugs". There is a contingent of fans who have been trying to do that since the 80s, but it always says more about those folks than it does the team. By and large I think our fans are too worried about what the media says, just like with the Broadus stuff. Do what you believe is right and let the media write what they will. I also agree that from Wang's report of the Hoya player holding a chair wearing a boot, it sounds like it was Adams. In one of the photos where Clark and the Chinese player are in a shoving match, you can see the Chinese player getting knocked onto Adams, no chair in hand. Maybe it was before or after. Either way, since it sounds like the Chinese players all picked up their chairs right away, I don't have a problem with it. If guys from their side are aggressors and are grabbing chairs, I can't fault one of our guys for instinctively picking one up too--purely in self-defense and as a deterrent. You have no idea what this PLA team is about and what they're going to do, you can't risk that one of them doesn't run up on you with a weapon and catch you empty handed.

I hope the team brings it like this all season. We all said we wanted the team to be tougher. The 80's style take no worked. Let's get back to it and win some titles.
I just wish the story out there was "georgetown was disrespected, attacked, and had to leave after defending itself"
not "Georgetown started a brawl in China" which is how it's being painted.

Yeah, those stupid newspapers are actually required to check their facts and get the reporting right. The reporters might even do an interview or two. Who needs that? Look, it's not meant as a shot at Gene Wang or even the WaPo, as much as I dislike them for their perennially underachieving Hoyas coverage. But the Gene Wang story added very little in terms of context from what we saw from posts on this board other than what happened during the exit to the buses and confirmations on the names of players involved. There weren't any quotes, except those lifted from the official release. Don't blame Gene Wang for that - I think in that situation it probably would be impossible for him to get a quote from anyone - but as a sports consumer, newspaper reporting is failing us. It's why you're here too.

Anyone think Xu Zhonghao approaches Georgetown's coach if this is 1984? That would have been fun to see.

Maybe the kid with the torn ACL was worried he and his teammates were going to be sent onto some kind of thousand-mile long death march and thought he better bring a chair. Also, SF's joke was very amusing to any regular HoyaTalker.
