I'm sorry can we take a step back. The Chinese Govt was hosting Georgetown University team and fans. Our amateur athletes were playing their professional athletes. Now just for fun, imagine the situation in reverse. A group of amateur Chinese athletes playing professional American athletes (who represented the Armed Forces) while on a "Goodwill Tour." And then there was a full out brawl including American fans attacking Chinese athletes. The US & International Media would throw a fit. We would be forced to apologize and called everything under the sun for disgracing the US. I expect to see similar outrage the opposite direction. Agreed. And even the media would have been forced to portray Gtown as the victims if the Hoyas did not take the bait by being drawn into a fight (no matter their good intentions). But by involving themselves in what is widely being described as an oncourt brawl, Georgetown will get a lot of the blame and idiots on the internet will have a reason to tear into the program. The Hoyas needed their senior leaders to help calmer heads prevail, instead Henry and Jason seem to have been engaged in fistacuffs. If we had done nothing it wouldn't be a news story at all, and we'd have less self-respect. Hopefully the real story comes out and we're vindicated, but if the choice is between some bad press + the usual suspects who are stuck in the 80s labeling us as "thugs" and letting ourselves get bullied by a team of grown men from a Communist Army who were salty about facing some African-American 18 year olds who were better than them, I'd prefer a little bad press. At least we have our dignity. Without official reports out yet it's tough to say anything too definitively but it sounds to me like the fix was in and our team was getting hammered without the refs doing anything. Pushing and shoving is inevitable when that's the case. Turning the other cheek is one thing, but as a man, you can't let somebody else punk you out just because the game is in China and it might lead to bad press. You have to at least stand up for yourself. We know our guys. They are not thugs or punks. They are good kids who have basically 0 history of problems in the past. If other people want to twist the story to make them the bad guys, maybe that says something about them. As mentioned earlier, if the situation was reversed and the game was in Philly or DC and a bunch of grown guys from the Army or Navy were fighting some Chinese 18 year olds while bottles and chairs were thrown by fans, I think we know who would be labeled the bad guy and who would be embarrassed by the situation.

I am not condoning what took place, but the folks on here that are criticizing the Hoyas players repsonse to what could only be described as an increasing hostile environment should be embarassed. If I was in that situation, where not just the opposing team, but the refs and the fans were becoming more and more hostile towards the the team and coaching staff with no security presence to speak about to protect me and my teammates, I would likely have a similar reaction. I mean the reports indicate an opposing player physically intimidating our head coach? And we are supposed to turn the other cheek and just laugh it off? Sure I would have rather the team just left the court citing the increasingly unsafe playing conditions, but to blame the players is really hard for me to understand. School image aside, you have to picture yourself in that situation and understand the moment. I am just glad everyone got out of there safe. Hopefully the Hoyas can continue on and finish this tour out quietly. +1 I'd feel differently if somebody got hurt. It used to be that we only had to travel to Syracuse for this kind of experience.

It's been two hours since the 6 paragraph account of this appeared here and still nothing from Gene Wang. I realize that he probably has some actual reporting to value add here (quotes, official stats, statements, etc) that we haven't received yet, but this is why newspapers are dying and losing to the internet - we receive a six paragraph account that will probably be better analysis and more context two hours before the actual paper gets it in their web edition. Yeah, those stupid newspapers are actually required to check their facts and get the reporting right. The reporters might even do an interview or two. Who needs that?

yeesh the washington post report does not paint us in a good light. Was hoping it would vindicate us but instead muddles the issue more.
Especially because they seem to be mixing up tyler adams and Moses Ayegba based on their different injuries.
We're not going to come out looking good here or even neutral. This is bad.

I would not want to meet Moses Ayegba anywhere with a chair in his hands.

It reports the lopsided foul total and the fact that one of their players got in III's face. I'll live with that. sounds like we decided not to take any more mess from a group of MEN.

Why do you guys care what the media thinks of our team? Our team has been mild mannered for years. We all know the truth why care about what ignorant outsiders think?

We get the story of the Chinese security failing to protect the foreign guests, two anecdotes about the Rockets players being thuggish during the game, Henry getting a chair thrown at him, and JT3 has the final word in a carefully crafted and diplomatic statement. People looking for a reason to snark or hate on Georgetown will light up, but sticks and stones and all that. The Hoyas aren't trying to win an election, we'll be fine Or should it be "chairs and water bottles"

I just would've much rather read that we were purely acting in self defense while this seems to paint the teams equally at fault. Also lots of people will read the lopsided foul total as Georgetown being thugs and fouling the Chinese the whole game. Some people might think we started it based off of that.

I don't think the WPost report paints the team in a negative light. But the whole bit about Moses (if it was him) grabbing a chair is not a good thing even if he was only defending himself. Heck, the tool on ESPN 980 just left the air with a teaser that went something like "when we come back I'll tell you which Hoya walked onto the court with a chair."

Why do you people think this is a bad thing?
I have zero problem with how we reacted. If an opposing player approaches my coach, I'm going to react. If my team is getting hammered, and people are throwing things at me in the stands, I have to defend myself. Some of the turn the other cheek and this is bad for the program opinions on this thread are from the same people who have killed our team for being passive in the past.
This is basketball. It's ugly to say, but sometimes things like this happen. If somebody swings on me, you best bet Im going to swing right back on that person. And that Washington Post story, very well written I may add, doesn't paint us in a bad light in the least. Things got heated, we defended ourselves and our physical safety.
None of the players on this team had shown to be anything but gentlemen in the past. So I'm completely willing to give my Hoyas a mulligan on this one.

If Georgetown had 28 fouls by the half, they were on pace to foul out (if they were playing under rules where 5 fouls = fouling out) the entire team by the end of the game, since Adams and Ayegba wouldn't have been playing.
Has any NCAA team (or NBA team for that matter) ever gotten 28 fouls in one half? Clearly, there was lopsided officiating happening there, even if Gene Wang didn't explicitly make that conclusion in the article.

Edited. Not the time for inside jokes, esp. with attention on this board from various external news sources. I get it, though now that no one can read it, I reserve the right to insist it was much funnier than it actually was. As for this story, right now I can't get much angst up over it. The only real facts I have is that a group of 20-year olds played a bunch of pros and there was a brawl. The post by THB's friend seems rational, but we'll even discard that. It sounds like no one was hurt or seriously hurt, and if that's not true then I'll feel differently. But if the only real negatives out of this are perception, eh. I mean, we live in a country where half the news outlets ran with a story that President Obama's visit to India was going to cost $200M per day, even though it only requires an second grader's knowledge and reasoning capacity to see that was obviously false. My point is: with something as partisan as sports, the Syracuse fans are going to ignore their own players' patterns of recent violence against women and call our players thugs regardless of facts, posts, or PR efforts by our University. Because that's what sports fans do. And because people who go to Syracuse can't read. I'm glad Coach took the high road for now. I'm sure if one of our players did something that deserves punishment, he'll get it. I'm sure this will make us look bad, and I'm equally sure there's little to nothing we can do about it.

Here's the real problem: you get one of these international trips every few years and we really needed these games for an unproven team and bunch of new players. Now, either the remaining games will be canceled or everyone will be so uptight that they won't be very good real game experience. What a waste.
