You said we'd be surprised. I disagree. I pretty much figured that Chinese government would, you know, block websites, take down pictures, etc. That is what happened from what Ive seen so far. What do you think we are going to be surprised about? Do you think Chinese government will come out and apologize for the incident? I would be pretty surprised by that. My guess is that it wont happen. I will gladly be wrong. III said a diplomatic thing in about 7 seconds. Still waiting for the Chinese position. I'm not commenting on what their response should be, or when it should have been issued. But the fact is that the video and the photos of JC getting stomped on are out there now, and that will be a factor. They may not say much domestically in public, but they're going to do what they can to get the egg off their face on the international stage. It's currently 4 am in China. Just because one station is running something tells me nothing. You would like...what, exactly? Their president to being issuing a statement in the middle of the night? Yeah, the right thing to do would have been to issue a statement after the game, but JTIII is just a guy, not a Chinese bureacrat that has to worry about how his statement will be received. The reality is that no one was going to stick their neck out like that; they're going to wait to figure out what their response should be, especially with Biden in town. In the morning (in China), they'll have to review the photos, and the videos, see the international press coverage it has received, and they're going to figure out how to limit the damage. Where I could be wrong is whether China tries to use this to push nationalism or deal with their own domestic issues. Blaming the foreigners is a tried-and-true method of doing that (basically, it's a game of don't be mad at us, be mad at the outsiders). But because the video and pictures are out there, that becomes harder for them to do (even with certain websites blocked, this stuff will leak in China too). So they'll try to salvage what they can and move on. I understand that, but none of that is surprising. What would be surprising is if China apologized for the incident. If the coach of the basketball team said, "We regret this happened. We take responsibility for our part of it." That's all I am saying.

Wow, glad to have just wasted a good 2 hours catching up on what happened, glad I got work done this morning. These are just my observations from the video and various reports throughout the morning and afternoon. Not sure who the instigator was but it definitely escalates when the Chinese team/managers/Coaches/Commanding Officers cleared the bench. It seemed like any punches thrown were due to self/teammate defense and there weren't many "side-brawls". The fight near the baseline seemed to happen as the Georgetown player was trying to get away. Our team definitely huddled up and helped up whoever was injured but that's because the entire Chinese team was focused on 1 Georgetown player. (Any guess on who that was?) Anyways that one player didn't get out of the Chinese teammob til after the :55-:60 sec mark and still needed to be held back. We know he gets fiery, hopefully nothing ever escalates with him in the season. Coaches got him and the team back into the locker room quickly. That statement by JTIII was all you could ask for after an "international incident" ;D: perfect, timely, and diplomatic. I hope that we are able to continue the trip and play two more games. If need be, not against this team again. Life isn't about quitting and JTIII is not going to just bring the players home. He will use this as a teaching lesson for them. When we are at the Carrier Dome later this year and make a buzzer beater to doom Cuse to the NIT, Coach will be able to bring this fight back to the players and help them stay calm ;D.
Anyway, can we go on preseason trips every year? All this coverage and exposure to the team and players is awesome!

You know when opposing baseball teams spill out onto a diamond during heated moments you often get some jostling, a bit of pushing, a lot of pointing and even more stare downs. Most times it doesn’t result in punches and when it does teams with cooler heads try to pull apart the people engaged in the fighting rather than escalating it by throwing their own fists. If Jason is being mobbed by the other team and nothing is being done by it by officials then I can understand the Hoyas rushing to a teammate’s aid. But let’s not have separate mini-brawls break out as a result. Get between your teammate and the other team (push them away if you have to) and wait for your coaches to direct you on what you should do next (like heading to the exit). Try not to make a bad situation any worse especially in front of a crowd that is potentially hostile (and harmful) to you. That’s my take. If anything save the brawling for the Notre Dames or the Pitts or the UConns that push the team around during the BE season. But to take part in something like that during a goodwill trip to another country, even if you are the ones who were attacked first, is not good for the reputation of the program. It just isn’t. And despite the folks crowing on these boards that this was an encouraging sign for Hoya toughness and solidarity, I’m not sure if this dustup proves anything. Again I will wait and see if this toughness shows itself when the Hoyas play the Panthers. I appreciate your level headed response, but I still think you are trying to hard to defend your initial position. I think it's pretty clear after the video came out that we acted in a very Georgetown-like manner. We immediately defended our teammates, and when defending was over, JTIII told the guys to get off the court, and they did so. All day I've been stuck at a place in which the internet speed is basically dial up (and I keep losing connection). I can't see the video. I will have to wait for that when I get home. I'm only going by what has been reported and photographs. Sorry.

Really? They're punching and kicking a kid on the ground. Are you supposed to ask them nicely to stop? How's the view up there on your high horse? What a completely idiotic position you've taken - one that is intentionally ignorant of what actually happened. Looks like cooler heads need to prevail here as well. Without starting another brawl....do you think the only way for the Hoyas to defend Jason properly was to take swings at the other team? Do you believe that that was what III wanted to see his players resort to? Typically when this type of incident occurs both teams are called out by fans and the media for stooping to this behavior regardless of who initiated the ruckus (see: the Knicks). But I suppose some of us are not objective enough to see beyond our own biases. It doesn't matter if the Dragons acted like punks. You go out there, you push them off Jason and you get yourselves off the court if possible. Going any further to prove your manhood does nothing in this circumstance except make you look about as bad (whether it is fair or not) as the folks who started it and I'm really surprised that more of you don't see it that way. I don’t know. I could be wrong. Again this isn't some game against Syracuse we're talking about. Do you know where the Hoyas were? Its freakin' China. The Hoyas are representing their program, their university and their country and the last thing they should want is an ugly international incident. Especially one in a nation that doesn't have the same view of rights and due process as ours. If they needed this incident to bond, as some have suggested, that is rather disappointing. Frankly I don’t believe that. While I understand the point you are putting forth MCI, let's remember that we have a very young bunch of kids, travelling in a foreign land, with only their teammates as their companions and friends, with foreign opponents, refs and fans. Now things get physical and they see some of their teammates being attacked not one-on-one, but by 4 or 5 people, even some wielding chairs. Those that tried to get away from the melee were actually chased by multiple people. They may very well have been scared to death in that situation, and a very natural reaction is to fight off the assailants, not just try to "push" 4 or 5 adults away from your lone teammate laying on the ground. And they left quickly when directed by the staff, rather than staying to try to prove their "manhood". Could it have been handled differrently? Of course. But I really don't think we can blame these kids for reacting the way that they did.

Yes and no...the way that those players (Chinese Army? so trained soldiers?) were jumping on some of our players they need to be knocked off/pulled off. When you are surrounded by 3 other ppl that are also hitting you, while you are trying to knock/pull off the person on your teammate, majority of athletes would tend to hit back.

I nominate: "Big Trouble in Little China" or to be more obscure, how bout just a quote from that movie (doesn't hurt that the main character is named Jack): "Have ya paid your dues, Jack? Yessir, the check is in the mail." Shaking The Pillars of Heaven

The Chinese government just issued the following statement "Certain individuals have published photographs and videos of what they say occurred in a recent basketball game between the Chinese Army team and one visiting from the United States. To ensure this doesn't happen again, all cameras will be confiscated prior to all such future events".

It is, sadly, the statement I would expect the AD to release if a Kenner League game had ended in this fashion.

From the Deadspin (at least 3 posts on this already) comment section regarding the video:
It's like watching a bulldog in a China shop.

Jason Clark has had an eventful photo two days. One day he's shown being addressed personally by the Vice President of the U.S. and the next day he's shown on the floor about to be kicked. What a photo album to show his grandkids later in life.

This is just a minor point, but the video is from the opposite side of the stadium as the pictures we have seen were taken, so adjust your perspective during the reenactments.
