Saw him play on a replay of 1985 SJU v. Hoyas game at Cap Center. Worst player on the floor.

This made me google Mateen and I found this SI story from early in the 84-85 season. For the older fans on the board, it'll take you back to a Hoya Utopia. The younger ones might be amazed at just how entrenched we were on the throne of college hoops at the time. And the current players could learn something from the description of the fiery, mentally tough players from the glory years. sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1122966/index.htm

I was there as well. The loudest crowd ever at the Cap Centre.

Wow, does bring back memories when men were men and boys were boys. the Hoyas were the men and the rest of college basketball were boys. JT3 motto when he first smar back home was "Some have forgotten, we will remind them,...We are Georgetown" He may need to be reminded of the physical and mental caliber of the players his father recruited and if they did not have that toughness, like Mateen, they usually realized that they should find another school to play for.

"The way coach John Thompson's rampaging hordes controlled this alleged showdown between the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the polls bordered on the surreal"
I love that description of that team

Many of you will of you know about (and some of you were in) "Rejection Row" in 88-89, but who else I remembers "The Grady Bunch" at the Cap Centre?

Probably not far off--if he was 16 or 17 as a senior in high school in 1983-84, that would put him around 42 today. He's also listed online as an industry analyst in Indianapolis. Either way, hope all is going well.

I had opportunity to meet him, lived near me in village A. I was class of 1989, he transferred I believe after his sophmore year. Should probably be around 42 or 43. He was as tall as Sims but thinner and less muscular.

Mateen actually committed to Ohio St. coming out of highschool. He was a The Sporting News All American. Michigan recruited him hard as well. Some way Thompson persuaded him to come to Georgetown.

I lived in first floor New South with that class. Grady roomed with Kevin Floyd (from So Cal, I think; left after one year) and Perry roomed with Ronnie Highsmith. They were all good guys.
And, yeah Lic, I think it was Jerome Lane who was trying to mix it up with Perry, who was a Gold Gloves boxer. Oh, we so wanted to see Perry take knock his block off.
The good old days. But it should also lend some perspective to some of the current criticisms. I mean, 2 out of 4 recruits from that class were gone early, one of whom was (I believe) the Ohio player of the year who just didn't get the job done. Stuff like that happened in the heyday of Pops' tenure, and it continues to happen. Getting the right talent is a tough tough job.
