NCSU fans are CRAZY and have nothing better to do than complain about calls from over twenty years ago. To be fair, if we play Davidson in twenty or so years, I plan to bitch about the refereeing from 2008. Same.

You have to admire the State fans for remembering a game in 1989. Do we forget UCONN in 96?

I know I'm still mad about Corey Brewer and Greg Oden's charge and I doubt I'll forget that in 14-15 years. Teams with history tend to remember that history.

State fans are an interesting breed. They have a complex being second fiddle to both UNC and Duke so slights or most any kind are imbedded in their DNA to come out whenever possible. Leslie will or rather should be an good challenge for GU but he doesn't seem to be playing a lead role yet from what I have seen of State. He has the athletic ability to take over a game even against GU but also the head to blow up a game in favor of any team playing against NCSU. Outside of him Georgetown's guards are a lot better than State's guards right now. Might be closer at tourney time but now shouldn't be close.

I will be mad about the Greg Oden call forever. Worst call in a big time situation not involving a perfect game ever. OK, maybe I'm overstating its significance. But a truly awful call and at the worst time for us.

Seriously. Would any of the older fans care to weigh in on Iowa in 1980? I don't recall any particularly egregious calls. But I do recall we had a 14 point second half lead. We also had easily our best team of the JT era to that point, with two senior all americans leading the way -- Johnny Duren at PG and Craig "Big Sky" Shelton at PF. They played together at Dunbar in HS, and also ran with Jeff Green's dad, who was a very high level HS player too, but messed up his grades and never went to college -- hence his insistence on Jeff skipping AAU play to go to summer school. Also on the team was a sophomore Sleepy Floyd, who was absolutely amazing already. We all felt like GU had a serious chance at our first National Title! But, Iowa pulled a 'Nova and could not miss in the second half. From the field or the line. They won by one... some last minute craziness. From that point on, JT went to the slow down and/or four corners offense when he had a lead late in the game. I believe that strategy cost us as many games as it won us... well, except when David Wingate (came later) was the 1 with the four corners. Guy was quick and could beat anyone to the rim. It was extra devastating because we were about to lose Two of the three best players in Hoya History -- to that point -- in Duren and Shelton. Our "best shot" at a TITLE was lost. Of course, we did not know that 18 months later patrick Ewing would show up! Oh, and Tbird, one more thing. The correct term isn't "older fans", it is VETERAN fans!

Yeah - I'm thinking it was on a shot that went in. Whistle Blew. NC State thought it was going to be an "and one", which would have tied the game or put them up. Ref called the travel. But replays showed his foot hitting the ground before he released it. And I could be totally inventing this, but I don't think the announcers picked up on his foot hitting the ground before he released the shot, and instead were trying to find out where he traveled before he jumped into the air. Which is why it was controversial, but it seemed pretty clear it was a travel. Edit - found this video: www.statefansnation.com/index.php/archives/2009/03/29/1989-worst-call-in-ncaa-tournament-history/So it definitely wasn't clear it was a travel, but you can't really tell in this video if he came down before the shot left his hand. But it didn't look like a foul on Zo either. Corcianni travelled. It happened before the contact when he did not come down on both feet at the same time, redirecting himself toward the basket with a step with his right foot, which had been on the floor when he gathered the ball to stop his dribble, after he had planted his left. Even if this had not been the case, one could easily argue that the offensive foul called on Mourning at the other end (around the 5 minute mark in the video) was worse. This, along with Smitty's being hobbled with an ankle injury, was among the reasons that the Wolfpack was able to make things close in the second half. PS - Packer was an idiot.

Here is the key to the game. Defensive rebounding and limit live ball turnovers. If they don't kill us on the boards and get fast breaks off our live ball TO's we will Tom Cruise.
This needs to be said however.....his storically we lose this game.
