Maybe this is a little ambitious, but I'd really like to see Otto start from day one. We need to give these freshman a longer leash so that they can develop.

While it looks like a decision may be imminent, and we have good shot at landing Otto, lets not jump the gun. This has been a very quiet recruitment as the family seems to be controlling things as opposed to AAU handlers and the like, who often leak information to favored outlets. I felt that we had a good shot once Anderson left Mizz. Also, win or lose on Otto, it is clear that JT3 has realized what needs to be done talent-wise and size-wise to compete at a high level. In retrospect, this year's team was limited athletically, with a 6'3" SF in Austin, a 2G without a handle in Clark, and a physically limited center in Julian, who tried hard but seemed to wear out at the end of the year. Talent-wise? Really? Austin was a burger AA. He and Clark were all-Met POYs. Julian was VA player of the year. I bet Julian was as highly ranked coming out of HS as Porter is (in the 90-100 range).

It will depend on how quickly he picks up the system, and how hard he works betwen now and first tip. If he earns it, he will start - just like the other guys on our oster.

Safe bet is Markel, Jason, Hollis, Nate and Henry. But lots of moving parts still...
Great pick up by Gtown. This class is BIG. This is exciting...almost as exciting as the swag Jabril will bring to the Hoyas next year.

Don't forget about this (I assume it's on national TV):
Porter's story is the exception to the rule. A star player from a tiny town who didn't play AAU basketball. It wasn't until late last summer that high-major teams began pursuing him. His diligence and mystery earned him a slot in the Jordan Brand Classic game, which is to be played this Saturday in Charlotte.

Overall: Markel/Vee, Aaron/Jabril/Jason, Hollis/Otto, Lubick/Hopkins, Adams/Sims My starting prediction/Hope: Markel, Hollis, Otto, Hopkins and Sims. 4 Scorers and a big man inside to clean up. Recipe for success. I'd think Lubick over Otto or Hopkins.

However, I think hopkins is has a chance because he is a scorer with size--just depends on how much muscle he puts on over the summer.

A better criticism might be asking why we missed out on so many. Is it the assistants, the style of offense, the school's academic reputuation as being rigorous, JT III's reputation for playing a short bench, or some other cause. . OR THE FACILITIES? the fact that we're so close with a number of highly regarded prospects + still bringing in top 25 classes (maybe even better if Porter does come to georgetown like he should) when we don't play on campus, don't have a practice facility worth crap and there isn't yet construction on a new one, is pretty damn impressive. Imagine what JT3 could do with an elite practice facility! As excited as I am to possibly get Porter, the idea that this is a watershed or new is silly. The watershed moment in recruiting for g'town was Monroe, imo. We can't define recruiting by future success in school. Beating Duke for a priority announced georgetown under jt3 as a legit elite NATIONAL recruiting threat. The problem is that the transition from just locking down as much local talent as possible to looking national was bumpy and so we had some small classes with near misses and letting local players get away. What's exciting to me, beyond the talk of "talent" or "athletes" or whatever, is the combination in this class of national elite players (Porter, hopefully + Adams), local and semi-local under the radar players (Trawick when we got him + Whittington as well), and prominent local players (Hopkins, as much as we seem to be worried about his "motor" is pretty prominent considering who was recruiting him). It seems the coaching staff figured out how to recruit across the spectrum. That's exciting for future years, assuming this is the new norm. Good points. The folks over at the KU board sure seem to this facilities are important: mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=172&f=2481&t=7418573&p=2

Otto spelled backwards is Otto; and inside out it spells TOOT. How about Toot Porter?

Looks like I'm going to be buying some Georgetown gear......... Bubba is a Hoya. Crash -- you'll look great in Blue and Gray! Is Bubba going to put that name on the back of his Hoya Jersey? Gotta love it! Thanks for your insights along the way. And welcome to GU. It's GREAT to be a Hoya fan! Not gonna lie, it would have been nice if he went closer to home so I could go see him play more often. But in the end, I think this is the best decision for Bubba and I am really excited. I guess this just means I'm gonna have to plan a trip to the east coast sometime this winter. I had gotten the chance to talk to both Coach Thompson and Coach Kirby this year and both seemed like great people. I think in the end, that was a big reason he picked Georgetown. I know Bubba will do fine there both on and off the court. He really is a great kid who has a good head on his shoulders. He's a hard worker who doesn't take anything for granted so while I don't expect him to start from day 1, I wouldn't be surprised either.

Awesome, awesome pick up. Gives the class depth, length, and athleticism. Terrific.
But I'm not exactly sure why so many people who have never seen him play are putting him into the starting lineup. But, hey, it's always nice to dream that Otto will come in and impact the team from Day 1.
I think given his high school competition, lack of AAU/summer league play, and thin frame, there is a good chance that it will take a while for Otto to adjust to Big East level of play.
My feeling is that we will start the season with a starting lineup of Markel, Clark, Hollis, Nate, and Henry. The chances that at least 1 (maybe even 2 or 3), of the 5 incoming freshman develop nicely and impact the team by year end is a pretty good bet.
In our justified exuberance today, we should remember that there are veterans on the team ahead of the freshman and that it usually takes some time for the freshman to adapt. There aren't too many Day 1 Greg Monroe starters. Even Freeman didn't start until half way through his freshman season. Taking last year as an example, Nate had a college-ready frame, struggled early, and cracked the lineup for some solid minutes toward the end. Markel never really got impact minutes behind Chris. It's tough for freshman to come in and impact right away.
Let's not heap too much on Otto until we see him compete at the next level.

I agree that we shouldn't put too much pressure on these freshmen, but the markel, clark, hollis, nate, henry lineup just feels like a continuation of the mentality of the last few years. We need some fire in there and we need to shake things up.

Normally, I would agree with you, Ranch, but there are a few things different here. Primarily, we are replacing three starters, which means that there are a lot of available minutes. It is easy to envision a good chunk of those minutes being claimed by a freshman or two.
Second, your list of reasons why he may not be ready is a little off. You're definitely right about the high school competition, and I think this is a pretty major factor, but his frame is fine. He's already bigger than Hollis and looks like he can easily add 10-15 pounds with a good training regimen. I think too much is said about needing an NBA body in the Big East, when plenty of kids are very successful despite thin frames - look at Jeremy Lamb. He will put on weight for sure, but he doesn't need to sit until he does so. Also, AAU is not about improving your game or preparing for college. AAU is about being seen and marketing yourself. Otto chose to stay at home and work with his dad on his game - his preparation for college surely didn't suffer, even if it ended up costing him some real estate on the rankings.

Ranch is right on the money! Also go by the past - III starts his experienced and upperclass players first. Then........ it's up to X to prove himself. I saw a video clip of Bubba doing cartwheel dunks but there is SO MUCH more to college basketball than that. I'm not hatin' on Bubba - I love the pickup but don't expect that everyone is going to swoop in and be The Savior.
