And since this is the Geek Thread, I should point out that there is a new Millenium Falcon augmented reality app that I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be able to resist for very much longer. Oh my God, this is so much fun it should be illegal!! Agghhh!!! There are TIE fighters all over my living room!!!!!! How did I miss this? Not the augmented reality thing, but Boz self-quoting and responding to his own post! That's pretty geek.

Let's hope it's better than the fourth book.
I will admit having gotten completely sucked into this saga and am anxiously awaiting the HBO series.
But 'A Feast for Crows' was really not good at all.

I hear you, but I have hope that the next book will focus on a better set of characters which should help. It was disappointing to read three books and then be bombarded with many new and considerably less interesting characters for 1000 pages.
In reality, after investing nearly 4000 pages of reading, I'm going to read whatever he puts out.

Maybe I'm just a homer, but I really liked it, except for the Ironborn. The issue, though, is that after three straight books of breakneck pace, you had only one plotline where anything actually happened in terms of action (Cersei's). I found the Dorne plotline interesting, but it was a lot of work for the reveal; I loved the Brienne plotline from a character/feel strandpoint, but it's largely irrelevant aside from showing the time; I loved the Arya plotline but again it's character development. And Sam got some. It's a different type of book, and I think the series needed a break from the pace. But it's time to pick it up. And I think it will -- this book took so long because of the convergence of certain characters. That will likely create some fun. --------------------------- I can't wait until April 17th, either.

Switching gears -- Feb 10, 2012. Star Wars in 3D. Sadly they are starting with Phantom Menace instead of A New Hope. Who's going to see it? I hate the idea of plunking down more money for the first three episodes, but man, the idea of 3D is too hard to pass up.
And by the time the "classic" trilogy rolls around, it will be worth it.

Does 3D really work well retroactively? I mean, I'm sure the computers can rig it, but for Eps 4-6 especially, I imagine it's not as effective as actually shooting with two cameras.

3D should conclusively prove that Han shot first. Raylan Givens sure knows he did.

3-D applied after the fact is horrible, don't waste your money seeing Star Wars again. Shot in 3-D = Avatar. 3-D applied afterwards = Clash of the Titans.

HBO is killing me with all these teasers.
Just hurry up and get here already.
Oh, and don't suck.
(not too worried about that second one; it really looks outstanding, visually at least)

Noooo! It won't be worth it! Every time George gets more time to muck around with things, he makes it worse! WORSE!

A Game of Thrones-themed food truck is supposed to be scooting around Manhattan this week (and somewhere in L.A. next week). Union Square at 6ish is the only fixed target for tonight (Monday).
What has happened to our civilization??

"Q. Are there any long fantasy stories that, to you, really nailed the landing? Lindelhof: I think The Lord of the Rings trilogy has a very satisfying ending, and there’s not really that deep of a mythological construct. The idea of these guys have a quest and the quest is to get this ring, throw it into a volcano, and that’s the end!"
So, Damon Lindelhof never actually read LotR.

TV thread or geek thread?
Geek thread or TV thread?
Wherever it should go, I was perfectly happy with last night's premiere. Some minor quibbles (who are these "white walkers" anyway?), but overall it was a strong start.
I won't say much about the acting, but since he is probably one of the most talented actors in the cast, I will say I think Peter Dinklage is playing Tyrion a bit wrong.*
He seems far to happy in his sarcasm, at least initially. His scene with Jon Snow was good though & there was a hint of the anger, resentment and self image issues that are a big part of his character.
Not sure I like the actress playing Cat either. I'm pretty sure she wasn't the first choice for that role. We'll see how she does, but she didn't really impress me out of the gate.
But, as I said, mostly minor quibbles. This series should be a lot of fun.
(*EDIT: In fairness, I was just thinking about this, and realizing that I know far more about Tyrion's character because I've read all the books. I'm trying to remember what my first impressions were of him at this early stage, and maybe Dinklage isn't that far off after all).

That actually really annoyed me at the movie's end. I always saw it as saying that, even though massive threats can be destroyed, you still may have petty thugs at home. The movie wrapped things up nicely, but the need to mop up always made me respect the book more.

I thought it was a strong first episode as well and look forward to the season unfolding. Agree completely with Cat…thought that back when I saw the first advertisement for the show. Your Tyrion musings in the EDIT are spot on, not just for Tyrion, but the show in general. It is hard to put aside all that you know about a character. Typically, with a book to movie/show, it is not as big an issue because you are dealing with character development over 300pgs/during 2hrs. With this series, you are talking about character development over sometimes thousands of pages. And sometimes over not so many pages. I just hope people are patient with it – I have people in my office complaining that it was too confusing, too many characters, etc. I didn’t want to break it to them that it hasn’t even started to get tangled yet and they introduced a fraction of the characters that will matter. I fear that some people may drop out before things really get cooking. Not sure much could be done about the multifaceted nature of the story though; maybe just a prologue to kick things off (I actually hate the idea and it’s too late now). I read the 1st book some time ago, but I recall being confused for awhile too. You are plopped into a completely new world with a whole history and a ton of names (not to mention people with multiple names). As you read though, you pick more and more up and soon you are completely engrossed in the story. For TV though, I think people sometimes want passive, immediate gratification rather than complex storytelling. Or if there is confusion, they want it in the form of the big mystery – where are we? from Lost. That is the only explanation I have for The Wire not winning best show every year that it was on. hm
