I don't think we should post what he said since what you publish on Facebook is restricted to your "friends".
That said, he does hear what some of us are writing here, and he sounded mature in his response.

I think it's posted in one of the other current threads on this board, but the message doesn't specifically identify the author as Chris. Regardless, the sentiment expressed should make some posters here feel some semblance of shame. Not gonna happen of course....

And people wonder why thread titles get changed or posts get deleted. Stop bitching about Hoyatalk not being a "bastion of free speech." Well, first off Hoyatalk can do whatever it wants and we all know the rules. Second, the yelling and whining we all do in front of the TV at home is fine when you're sitting around with 2 other people. It's not fine when you're posting it in a place these kids can read.

Several comments:
One: the assumption that only Georgetown Alumni post here is wrong - this is an open board as long as posters follow basic rules.
Two: players DO read this board and posters are reminded that the players are students who are trying their best. Whether you think college athletics is akin to professional sports is not relevant. While discussion of what happens on the court is fair game, posters who claim to know the motivation (or lack thereof) of those players are out of bounds and such posts will be edited/deleted without warning. Thread titles that do the same thing fall under this. Chances are great that the player you are calling 'garbage' here is already upset about his performance and doesn't need you spouting off here to tell him that.
Three: Players/staff are to be afforded a reasonable level of respect and privacy AT ALL TIMES. If a player's facebook page/status is not open for public viewing it is inappropriate to post that here.
If any of you have any questions about any of this, PM one of the moderators.

We should all try to restrict our spouting off to direct it only at the moderators. (I kid Dan, I kid). I would think the players might understand a "heat of the moment" tirade durng the course of the game, they and their teammates probably feel the same at times - but the bashing of these kids, the virulent criticism of every misplay, is beyond the province of even the most fanatic supporter. Deep down we all love these guys and what they do for the program, so let's remember that the next time we see a wild pass or a forced shot. Syracuse players, on the other hand , should always be fair game for any insulting comment on any board or forum.

. . . It's not fine when you're posting it in a place these kids can read. Well, I think whether whining/complaining/criticizing a player's game performance is fine or not is a question of what the purpose of this board is. I assumed that it was a place to discuss the Hoyas basketball team, pros and cons. It seems some people think it should be a pep squad--only for supporting and encouraging the team. That's fine, but let's make that clear in the rules and maybe there is a market for a different kind of forum out there. Now I understand that the players may read this board. I don't know what the solution to that is. If you think the solution is that the board must only be a pep squad, then there you are. To me, the value of the give and take, warts and all, discussion of the team on this board trumps the fact that players may read negative comments about their game performance if they choose to read here.

It's a bit of a problem. If the Board really tries to crack down on criticism of any stripe, then it will cease to be anything resembling a free and fair exchange between Hoyas fans. With that said, the last thing this program needs are additional reasons for prospective and current players to be unhappy/discontented/upset. We ask a whole lot of our players, we know they work hard, and personal attacks are probably damn near unjustifiable. Debating over what play should have been run, or lamenting an off-shooting game is one thing... accusing people of being lazy when they spend hours and hours a day undertaking athletic efforts that NONE OF US could remotely handle seems needlessly inflammatory. I guess the best solution is to simply appeal to posters to self-moderate, and retain a classy Hoyas fan demeanor at all times. (I'll defer to the mods to respond to anything that goes overboard -- I think they do a great job).

Posters can discuss and criticize the basketball all they want without making it a referendum on whether the player cares/tries hard enough/etc. All it takes is re-reading before you hit post. It's actually pretty simple.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but I've always thought there is a huge difference between:
Player X had a bad game.
and
Player X sucks.
Both the wording and the time aspect (game, week, half-season versus permanence) are important.

i think its a lesson for all of us.
A lesson for Chris, the fans, etc.
For Chris, he has to realize there will be criticism. Harsh criticism that is over the top, way passed the line of decency. And he has to learn how to deal with that, ignore it, and move forward without acknowledging it. Yes, its tough, and the first inclination is to react. But, the growth process of adulthood you learn that in life there will be criticism, justified and unjustified, and to not understand that will lead to a life of agitation and unrest.
For the Fans, wasn't too long ago we were a basketball program that was just on life support. JTIII's problem is that he had success way too early, sweet sixteen in his 2nd year, final four in his 3rd year, Big East regular season champs again his 4th year. Folks have gotten spoiled. And now we are struggling a little bit, and impatience is growing. The nature of college basketball is tough. Look at UCLA, UCONN, and UNC and even Florida. Powerhouses that have hit bottom or below standards that they are accustomed too. Being a fan is a lifetime thing. Its like a marriage. You are in it for the long-term and there will be ups and downs. After all, We are Georgetown. Where our legendery coach, Pops, he had a deflated basketball in his office. Which meant, there was more to life than basketball. thats is what this program has been about. We are struggling, we have flaws as a team. JTIII has made mistakes along the way. And the criticism in that regard is fair. But sometimes, we all need to take a step back, in realize where we have been as a program over the years, who we have been as a program over the years, and then maybe we will realize we are getting annoyed for no reason.
We are Georgetown. We argue, we debate, we bicker, we celebrate, we laugh, we cheer, we are all family in this. The Hoya family. Let's not lose sight of that in times like these.

I think the last few posts addressed this very well. No one is asking for this to be a pep squad board. Just a little common sense and decency in the critiques. If some posters don't have enough sense to figure out where that line is, or don't really care when they cross that line, then the moderators have to get involved and, of course, the 'free-speechers' will cry foul. Oh well, that's life and there are other places to vent.
