. . . It's not fine when you're posting it in a place these kids can read. Well, I think whether whining/complaining/criticizing a player's game performance is fine or not is a question of what the purpose of this board is. I assumed that it was a place to discuss the Hoyas basketball team, pros and cons. It seems some people think it should be a pep squad--only for supporting and encouraging the team. That's fine, but let's make that clear in the rules and maybe there is a market for a different kind of forum out there. Now I understand that the players may read this board. I don't know what the solution to that is. If you think the solution is that the board must only be a pep squad, then there you are. To me, the value of the give and take, warts and all, discussion of the team on this board trumps the fact that players may read negative comments about their game performance if they choose to read here. There is a huge, huge difference between relatively adult criticism of a player or coach's mistakes, weaknesses, questionable decisions, etc., and simply taking potshots at somebody. If you think that limits this board to being a "pep squad", then perhaps Syracuse fandom would be more to your liking.

i think its a lesson for all of us. A lesson for Chris, the fans, etc. For Chris, he has to realize there will be criticism. Harsh criticism that is over the top, way passed the line of decency. And he has to learn how to deal with that, ignore it, and move forward without acknowledging it. Yes, its tough, and the first inclination is to react. But, the growth process of adulthood you learn that in life there will be criticism, justified and unjustified, and to not understand that will lead to a life of agitation and unrest. For the Fans, wasn't too long ago we were a basketball program that was just on life support. JTIII's problem is that he had success way too early, sweet sixteen in his 2nd year, final four in his 3rd year, Big East regular season champs again his 4th year. Folks have gotten spoiled. And now we are struggling a little bit, and impatience is growing. The nature of college basketball is tough. Look at UCLA, UCONN, and UNC and even Florida. Powerhouses that have hit bottom or below standards that they are accustomed too. Being a fan is a lifetime thing. Its like a marriage. You are in it for the long-term and there will be ups and downs. After all, We are Georgetown. Where our legendery coach, Pops, he had a deflated basketball in his office. Which meant, there was more to life than basketball. thats is what this program has been about. We are struggling, we have flaws as a team. JTIII has made mistakes along the way. And the criticism in that regard is fair. But sometimes, we all need to take a step back, in realize where we have been as a program over the years, who we have been as a program over the years, and then maybe we will realize we are getting annoyed for no reason. We are Georgetown. We argue, we debate, we bicker, we celebrate, we laugh, we cheer, we are all family in this. The Hoya family. Let's not lose sight of that in times like these. Well said. Hopefully the players realize that we get as heated as we do because we care, and because we do wish the best for the team. That probably doesn't come across most of the time. It certainly doesn't come across when we're sounding off about crazy drives to the hoop or careless passing. But that's the underlying sentiment.

maybe there is a market for a different kind of forum out there. The irreverently funny, sometimes caustic folks at Casual Hoya allow fans to post pretty much anything they want. If you haven't already, you should try it. They have definitely carved out their niche in the market, and its vastly different than HoyaTalk.

Nice post, way! Great job.
More importantly, Chris and all of the players should know that we support them and are proud of them as student-athletes at Georgetown University!!

Well put, Way -- this is what way too many fans overlook. I could be wrong, but I bet if you look at the performance of GU's program even over the past ten years (thus including the Esh period), it's probably not exceptionally worse than those of other programs we are typically compared to (UCONN is an obvious exception, and I wouldn't include programs like NC and Kansas that are obviously superior to all the others).
Had JTIII not been available, it is very possible that the program would have remained in terminal rebuild mode a la St. John's, Seton Hall, Rutgers, Providence, etc.
Nothing wrong with being critical, but the bigger picture is what really matters.

Exactly. Posters can discuss and criticize the basketball all they want without making it a referendum on whether the player cares/tries hard enough/etc. All it takes is re-reading before you hit post. It's actually pretty simple. Ok, we agree on the limits of the board. I only disagree in that I thought my thread title was about basketball performance and not about whether a player was trying hard enough. But reasonable minds could disagree about that. I would only ask other posters to not be indignant when its possible that a "criticizer" means to discuss basketball and not a player personally. This was a helpful discussion, thank you.

To some extent, any post that is critical of Chris, even if cabined to legitimate criticism, is going to get a harsh reaction simply because of the deluge of illegitimate criticism he hasn't gotten this year. I think many of us posters have just gotten annoyed with the ripping of Chris, Henry, the overall effort given by our team, etc. that we err on the side of grouping legitimate criticism with all of the crazies, downers, trolls, and overall a$$holes that 2 game losing streaks tend to bring out on Hoyatalk.
