From Hoyas to Henson? Ex-Georgetown coach wants Aggies job By Jeff Carlton Tribune Reporter February 18, 2005 Former Georgetown men's basketball coach Craig Esherick took over for one coaching legend. Now he wants to replace another. Esherick, 48, told The Tribune on Thursday he has applied for New Mexico State's head coaching job, which opened after illness forced Lou Henson into retirement after 41 seasons. "I'd be a heck of a coach for them," Esherick said by phone. "But that is not my call." New Mexico State Athletics Director McKinley Boston confirmed he has received Esherick's application. Bubba Jennings, a former star at Clovis High and Texas Tech, had also applied, Boston said. Jennings is the director of video operations for Texas Tech. "I'd be a heck of a coach for them" is what he says? Hearing a guy make one comment like that would take him out of consideration if I was an athletic director. How about you let other people determine whether you'd be a good coach or not rather than declaring it like that.

What makes Esh think he would be a heck of a good coach for ANYBODY!!!!!!!!
How does he get off on being this arrogant after seeing a team he had under 500 last year turn around and go to the NCAA Tournament?
It's just baffling, really.
And do people actually APPLY for head coaching positions in college basketball? Can you imagine what his resume would look like?
Craig Esherick Somewhere near DC, USA
OBJECTIVE:
I want to be the head coach of the NMSU Lobos. I've followed a legendary coach at one program and ran it into the ground. I would fit right into your program and be one heck of a coach for you.
WORK EXPERIENCE:
Former Head Coach, Georgetown University - one sweet 16 appearance - took once storied program from national stage into oblivion - could not win with the best player at georgetown in 5 years - implemented a simple offensive and defensive scheme that consisted of 2 offensive plays and 2 defensive plays - successfully managed to get 3 possible star players to transfer in the span of 2 years - career highlight: making sportscenter's top 10 list of worst coach screaming outbreaks in history.
QUALIFICATIONS: - I'm a lawyer, so I can represent your school in court, too. - I can run the one-fist/two-fist offense to a T. - I can stand on the sideline for an entire game and firmly know that I have no idea what is going in the game. - I have one helluva mustache that makes even Burt Reynolds jealous.

I'm still waiting for the required defense of Esherick that happens whenever he is criticized. Anyone...anyone?

after seeing a team he had under 500 last year turn around and go to the NCAA Tournament? I fail to see how this is the same team as last year. Jeff Green and Roy Hibbert are a gigantic upgrade over Gerald Riley and Courtland Freeman (no offense meant to those guys, but...it's true). Roy may be unpolished, but his size alone makes a huge (pun intended) difference. Just look at the change in our rebounding margin from last season to this one. Better/bigger guys = better rebounding. As an aside, this being my 500th post, I would like to welcome myself to the All-American club. Other posters have taken many of my opportunities away, but I've always known I would produce when given the chance. Finally, I'd like to thank my hands for being so great.

I'll bite. While I'm not going to sit here and act like I don't have a sense of humor (some of this stuff is really funny), I do think, again, I will play the role of Esh defense attorney (pun intended.)
I suggest that rather than mock him, we root for Esh to get the job. After all, he dedicated much of his life to the Blue and Grey (and to basketball), was in a difficult position following a legendary coach of a storied program (with little resources in comparison to many other top programs), and deserves a chance at being involved in the game once again. Do you all think he is incapable of learning from this experience? (Obviously, given his statement that he would be one "heck of a coach" may suggest otherwise, but really, what else would you say. "Actually, I don't think I would be any good!"?)
And to show you all that I do have a sense of humor, I can think of a very good reason to root for him to get the job:
By accepting a job at NMS, he would no longer be eligible to get paid out on his contract extension, as I believe you only get this money if you don't take another job, right? Therefore, we would have a little more money to spend on the future JT Convocation Ct.
Come on guys, you should be happy for him to get another chance. Don't we all deserve 2nd chances in life?
LET'S GO HOYAS!!! SINK ST. JOHN'S!

I'm willing to bet that the reporter said something like "Do you think you would be able to help their program?" or something like that. What do want him to say?
"No, I wouldn't do a very good job at all, but I'm tired of getting free money from my old bosses so I hope I get the job."
You folks who want to assume he wouldn't be any better at another school than he was here, I have two words for you.
Bill Belichick.
A failure in Cleveland is now considered a "genius", and by some to be "the greatest coach of all time". Let's see, if he gets the job, what kind of success he has before pouncing on him.

Yikes.
"I'd be a heck of a coach...."
Too similar to the statement he made toward the end of last season.

(AP) New Mexico-
Former Georgetown Coach Craig Eshrick is no longer in the running for the New Mexico State job after it was discovered that he would only accept a contract for "twenty years."

How about you let other people determine whether you'd be a good coach or not rather than declaring it like that. I would have to agree. If Esherick wants to receive high major consideration again, he is best off hiring a PR agent. Then again, it might not matter in the media market out there. Then again, he might make a good coach for them... if 98% of the job is based on graduating players. That other 2%? Well...

The big problem with Esh is that his first comment about the NM St. job sound like he has learned nothing about toning down his bluster. He might be a fine coach, but he should have said something more like, "I am very interested in returing to coaching college basketball, the job I love and the only job I have ever known. I see great opportunity at a place like New Mexico St, a place with a wonderful basketball tradition, and I would be honored to be considered for that position."

Very unusual and refreshing honesty from the NMS AD:
"I am committed to finding the best coach that I can afford," Boston said.
Hey, if Esh gets the job.... good for him. I wish the former Hoya -- who gave many years of service to GU -- all the best. Meanwhile, we have T3 so we have nothing to complain about.

Esh is still a hoya at heart so while he did have a dissapointing couple of years at georgetown, let's wish him luck in getting the NM St. job. Plus, that might allow us to go after all the transfers that program will lose as a result next year

Ahhhh...Esherick at NMS under McKinley Boston...that would be an amazing combination. The AD who presided over the Minnesota paper writing scandals combined with the bball coach that presided over the collapse of GTown basketball.
If that happens, I'll be praying for every NMS fan. I mean, what did they do to deserve that? I wouldn't wish that on anyone...ok, maybe Duke...and Cuse....and Wisconsin....but aside from that...and ND...I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

I think that Esh had to learn something from being fired by GU. It surprised him and probably hit him pretty hard. His "heck of a coach" statement isn't ideal, but I think people are reading too much into it.
New Mexico isn't in nearly as tough a league as GU, he might do well there, especially if he changes some things from his first stint as head coach.
I wish him all the best.
As for it affecting money GU has to pay, I doubt it. If his contract was guaranteed (did we ever get confirmation on that?) then he and GU have probably already worked out some sort of buyout (lump sum payment to Esh of a significant amount but far less than total contract value in exchange for releasing him from committment to GU)
