29 - Riley against Miami and Frank Hollendoner against NYU in the pre-three point arc era.

The Riley game is all the more forgettable because it wasn't even televised.

That was a truly amazing victory. AF was Awesome. Awesome Freeman has a nice ring to it. Great effort in the second half from everyone. With Greg the execution wasn't always there, but the effort certainly was.
I still thought, though, that even in the second half, our transition defense left something to be desired. It's just that UConn didn't have as may opportunities to push the ball in the second half as it had in the first, because we shot the ball way better. Half court defense, on the other hand, was great.
On edit, I see vcjack beat me to the punch. But I agree!

Daytona and VA have it nailed. Better rotation offensively allowed us to get back on D. i dont think they had more than 3 0r four runouts in the second half for maybe 4 pts. just as amazing was free's attention to D. along with some big time help from Hollis at times on Robinson.

I think it is fair to call the Freeman performance one of the best (if not best) scoring half we've seen from a GU player in the post-Magee era. Simply incredible performance only rivaled in my mind by the Redick performance in 2006 out of games in the MCI Center, but the fun part of the Redick performance is that he made nobody on Duke better.
Freeman also gave us key rebounds and loose balls that will be forgotten in 3 years. Did all the small things right and grounded our half court offense well with the shaky game from Clark and average game from Wright.

The title of the game: Austin and 4 hoops!
Don't discount the two Wright hoops before half and Julian's hustle to keep the ball alive twice at the end of the game.

The Riley game is all the more forgettable because it wasn't even televised. (corrected) wouldn't that make it more forgettable? Those Riley led Esh teams were painful so it's a good thing it wasn't televised. Thank God those days are long since over. On days like today I am reminded of just how far this program has come since the darkest days of the Esh Error.

Outside of Duke, I think that was the best Gtown game I've ever attended. Because of the comeback, the crowd was living and dying with every possession from about the 15 minute point on.
Obviously, I am saying this in hindsight, but as many mentioned, you would have to say that a big part of the 19 point deficit was simply poor play on our part and them out-hustling us. I couldnt remember more than 1 or 2 great half court sets that UConn had in the first half. They were just out-hustling us and playing great in transition. I had a feeling that we could have a chance in the 2nd half with adjustments, but I never thought we'd close the gap so quickly.
And, yeah, I cant say that was one of the best individual performances because Iverson used to do that on a nightly basis, but it was one of the best I've seen in many, many moons.

Vitale: "He was absolutely incredible here in the second half. He played as good as you'll see a college player perform. He did it all." for once I agree with him!

GREAT WIN ..the meltdown was terrible on this board(but I knew it was coming) - as I watched the game I knew we'd come back .. 28% fg/8 turnovers was horrible and the drought in the first half had me feeling the Hoyas were lucky to be down only 15 .. We earned this win and for me the player of the game was Julian Vaughn. The tip-in was crucial and that tip out was the difference. I was upset at halftime , but happy we got those 2 buckets to close it out. I felt we needed either AF or CW to catch fire and Austin answered. He must have felt that missed shot against Marquette came with a ALL-STAR performance to make up for it. 3-1 in the B.E when we should've easily been 4-0 .. no reason to cry over spilt milk here though. I still believe we will win the conf and go deep come March madness. ONE GAME AT A TIME .. But this team is special!

CANNOT say enough about this game.
The first half was an abject disaster. We settled for way too many threes, and missed the good looks that we had. Every single miss led to a layup or a three of the secondary break for them. They were absolutely running us out of the gym. We weren't hustling, we were rushing shots, and not getting back on defense. Weren't playing the way we should.
Then halftime. And either JT3 gave the greatest speech of his career, or we have an experienced team that knows what to do. We just came out and absolutely got after it. Not enough can be said about how good Austin was. Just absolutely phenomenal on offense and defense. Scored in every way imaginable. WE MADE PLAYS DOWN THE STRETCH. With 6 minutes to go, I remarked to my friend "we don't wilt the same way we did last year." Last year, you hit this team in the mouth, and they stopped trusting the system and tried to score 8 points on every trip down the floor. Now, we look like a JT3 team. Making those "lucky" plays (no one can tell me Julian was intending to make that go ahead tip in as opposed to just trying to grab the rebound) has a lot to do with putting yourself in the right place to succeed. As great as Austin was, it took Greg being there for layups, Julian tipping balls back out, and Chris busting his ass to get to that loose ball on the final possession to seal the game. Just a top to bottom classic effort from everyone on the floor in the second half.
Basketball wise, I think the biggest difference between the 1st and 2nd half was making our shots. The more we missed, the more chances UConn had to get out and run. They did a great job getting to the rim and hitting open looks on the secondary break in the first half. When we made our shots in the 2nd half, we forced them to go against our halfcourt defense, and we did a much better job of stifling them.
But breaking it down just to basketball terms, I think, misses a lot of the moral of this game. We fought. We trusted each other. We trusted the system. This is what we remember from 06-07 and 07-08. This is the kind of the play that gave us inordinate confidence at the end of the game. Frankly, when Acker missed that FT in the MQ game, I thought we were going to come down and score and win the game. And I really thought we could pull it out today. That kind of confidence, down the stretch, is the biggest difference from last year to this year. We are not the 08-09 Hoyas.

29 - Riley against Miami and Frank Hollendoner against NYU in the pre-three point arc era. I was at the game in which Frank scored his 29 points (first half). It was, I believe, televised, which was a bit strange for the Hoyas in my era. NYU was a big favorite, but we dismantled them behind big Frank.

YES - forgot to ink about that charge! - that was a PIVOTAL possession. Awesome's new svelt physique gave him the extra half step he needs to get in position to take those bangs. Not that I post a lot here but I am interested in the opinion of those in the know about the O-sets with Greg out on the wing - I just don't get it?? There are possessions where he is out there, never moves, and essentially spectates. Its not like we're gonna kick it out to him for the 3-ball try ...

chep3, I agree with you about the differences in the halves. Our not making our 3's and not making our easy layup took us out of our game, and soon they were far behind and seemed to quit for a while. CW's two big baskets just before halftime were big too, because they set the tone that would be our 2nd half comeback.

Great win!
As terrific as Freeman was my game ball goes to Julian Vaughn--monster tip-in! Love what he's bringing to the floor these days.
Only regret? The Raftery didn't call this game. ONIONS!

I don't think they quit as much as they didn't really know what to do. They couldn't score, and everytime they missed it led to an easy two for Uconn. If they quit, even for a few minutes, I don't think they make that comeback.
