Can we have a special dispensation on wearing blue and gray for this game? I plan to suit up. Where does one acquire a blue wig? At the bookstore table at the Verizon Center.

My sign suggestion for NYE at the Phone Booth: Thunderhorse??? Seriously??? WTF, Redmen? You might even have some St. John's fans (if there are any there) offering to buy you drinks.

Just so we're clear on this, the Thunderhorse was their GOOD option. In their near infinite wisdom, they opted instead for Johnny the Thunder Chicken who I hear is actually portrayed by the legendary Ron Artest, who has also been known to generate lightning, thunder and great winds by flapping his wings and blinking his eyes.

Nova will never be as low as #9, for me at least (you must not know enough Nova fans; I'm sure 'vado can enlighten you ). This year, I'd probably put them at 4 or 5, just because of how utterly obnoxious the cheeseheads were at the Phone Booth last year. First things first: Must. Beat. The Johnnies.

Having grown up in Philly, Nova is number one. Cuse is a very close second but number one will NEVER change. I'm still proud of the fact that the only fistfight I've ever been in was with a Nova fan when I was ten. And yes, I won. That being said, we can focus on Nova soon. SJU first.

So during the pre-Christmas snowstorm, I was stuck after a vacation in Houston, Continental's waypost of the damned. I arrived on Friday, found out my flight was cancelled, and spent the night. The next day, it was a cluster, as forty people were on every standby list, and maybe one or two a flight got out - only to have those two names be replaced by three. I stayed another night in Houston, and finally scored a flight out on early Monday afternoon.
Pretty much the only thing that was worth it was waking up Monday morning to see the Sweater Game on ESPN Classic.

Maybe just a coincidence but the Johnnies have really become a barometer for the Hoyas recently:
2004: Their only Big East win. 'Nuff said. 2005: We just need one more win to...ouch lost to the Johnnies in the Garden. NIT it is. 2006: Win pulling away early in the year and then the improving Hoyas blow them out in the second game. 2007: The peak for the Hoyas and the Johnnies feel every bit of it in a blowout. 2008: Blown out early...and then an uneven performance in the second game. Hmmmmm. 2009: I don't even want to talk about it.
St. Johns hasn't been good lately but they also never quit. How we perform against the old rival reveals something about the team's focus and maturity. Big game.

Reading Giga's post, I note that SJ's has had our number more than I realized for several years now. And it's not like they have been any good during that time. We must correct this.

This game is HUGE. We need to start off the BE season with a win.

I can't remember the last time a Big East opener was so huge. Lose this game, and all bets for this season are off, including an NCAA berth. It would set a terrible tone for Big East play to drop an opening home game against an improving but not top-tier Big East team, and it would make the schedule between now and the Duke game look a lot more imposing and treacherous.
Win, and we've got a real opportunity to open the conference season with some real momentum, including a potential 3-0 start heading into the big game against the Huskies in 11 days.
Keep in mind that the Johnnies went to Temple and had an easier time pulling out the victory than we did at home last month. Nothing is assured here.

Losing to St. John's would be bad, but will it be as bad as beating UConn was a year ago tonight. With five games against the iron three of the conference (WVU, Syracuse and Villanova), home losses to a second or third tier (I think there are 4 tiers plus Depaul) team like SJU is to be avoided, but, the world does not end if we bounce back with wins over Depaul, Marquette, UConn and Seton Hall. I doubt we can do much better than 4-1 and it might be better to get there on an upswing. To beat St. Johns, we will need to take a punch and deliver one back by battling on the boards and for every loose ball for 40 minutes. If we fail to be ready when the bell rings, but learn the lesson, I can live with that. If we are 2-3, I join the sky is falling crowd. As FL would say, St. John's is just another data point.

You're taking all the fun out of it. Obviously a loss is a loss, and there would be plenty of time to make it up. The point is that a home defeat here, data point though it is, would be predictive of a home defeat loss to UConn, and of serious potential difficulty with @marq and SHU. People assume a win over Marquette at the Bradley Center at their peril. This is a team that beat Xavier on a neutral floor--a Xavier team that looked equivalent to Butler recently.

Agree with you GP, but given that we lost to SJU TWICE at the end of last year, it would be very reassuring to see our guys come out with fire in their eyes, ready to reassert themselves as a Big East power. I think they will. Does anyone know the status of Anthony Mason? Julian and Greg need to assert themselves down low as big men to be reckoned with at BOTH ends of the floor and BOTH Boards! If they do that, the rest of the team will follow suit and we'll all be Happy Hoyas on NY's Eve!

RE: Does anyone know the status of Anthony Mason?
Good news for us: according to ESPN, Mason hasn't played all year (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/player/profile?playerId=27342).

The game against Marquette is going to be extremely tough whether we beat St Johns or not. They are up 4 on WVU on the road at half right now. Winning or losing to St Johns isn't going to change the difficulty of the upcoming schedule, the only thing it would change is fans perception of the schedule, which really doesn't matter at all I think we all learned last year early Big East results aren't indicitive of overall Big East performace. A loss wouldn't be a big upset or that surprising given last years results and the fact St Johns is a better team than last year. A win would mean would nothing in terms of long term results. Don't get me wrong this game is very important because its a Big East game, but a loss doesn't mean we will lose to this team or that team later on and a win doesn't mean we will beat this team or that team later in the season.
