Harvard at an empty Verizon Center followed by St. John's at a similarly empty Verizon Center. Two other potential trap games. How do the Hoyas respond???
Keep Lin under control. Win game.

Whatever chance Harvard had of winning this game just went out the window with the loss to ODU. Hoyas will be back, will pick up the intensity and blow the Cantabs right out of the gym.

Get some rhythm and intensity back for the BE season. Spend some extra practice time on foul shots. You gotta figure that Harvard will not match up, except for Lin, with as much quickness as the Hoyas and the Hoyas will get a lot of chances from the line. If they learn nothing else from the ODUious game, it's the importance of making foul shots.

You may be right that Harvard outside Lin and Brandyn Curry won't match us for quickness, but they match up in perimeter size, which is a defensive problem we had last season and last night. They've got a number of 6-6 to 6-7 guys playing perimeter. Even Christian Webster is 6-5. I see Harvard as a very challenging matchup, even if we hold Lin down to well below his average, and stifle their one big man, the guy from Norfolk, can't remember his name, because they've got this whole bunch of sizeable swing 3/4's, any one of which could go off for points beyond his average. Plus Curry is a Kyle Lowry type who'll be a big time point after Lin is gone.

i agree with you guys. Glad they have this one before Xmas and SJU. It will be a good bounce back because Harvard's strength, like Butler and Washington, is more scoring than d, and those are the teams we play well once we shut down the 1 or 2 good scorers. SJU will be a very, very big test. They will bang with us. I will be one of the probably 15 people in attendance at Verizon that night ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

Those who think Lin isn't quick are fooling themselves. He's purely quicker than any guard on our roster. Dude's a load. They have size, length, quickness and athleticism.
This won't be an easy game. Harvard's a good team

Nobody said Lin wasn't quick. MassHoya implied he's the only Harvard player to match up with us in quickness and I added Curry as the other quick guy on their squad. You're right, Daytona, that Harvard has length some quickness and athleticism, and is going to be a very tough matchup. They don't have very much size on the blocks, so if we get their one big man in foul trouble early, that's something we can exploit. If neither Julian nor Greg picks up early fouls defending smaller guys, or on real or imagined charging fouls, we should have a marked advantage inside. MassHoya's point about free throws is therefore well-taken. I worry about their fairly balanced group of supplementary scorers behind Lin. We have this pattern of doing a good job on an opponent's top 1 or 2 scorers, especially in the first half, but giving up points beyond their per game average to guys who are capable players, especially to guys who are small forwards that can hit jumpers. Then when the everyday scorers, like Lin, eventually get hot in the closing minutes, we've had trouble closing. There are games where we diverge from this pattern, as in Washington game where no unexpected guy for them got significant points, but Harvard may have more talented shooters than Washington did, despite which league they're in and who was ranked where. I think Jook's wrong about Harvard being more scoring than D. Look at what people have shot against them this year: under 40% and under 30% from 3. Brandyn Curry is especially a tough defender.

We've heard the sons of Harvard tell how Crimson lines can hold them...
Hopefully our Hoya D can hold them (especially Lin, who I haven't seen yet this year but am quite interested to see now that I'm reading more about him)

Hopefully our Hoya D can hold them (especially Lin, who I haven't seen yet this year but am quite interested to see now that I'm reading more about him) Lin uses ball fakes to get midrange jumpers as well as any player I've seen over the past 3+ years. Don't bite on what he's selling and keep your body in front of him on defense. JS

If St Johns is a trap game for this team they should all lose their scholarships. St Johns single-handedly killed any chance they had to make the NCAA's, twice.

THAT WAS THE LOWEST POINT OF THE SEASON LAST YR IN MY MIND ... ST. JOHN'S? ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ? Greg should want revenge for how they punked us in the Garden .. TWICE.. anyway .. I'm hoping our boy's wake-up and take it to Harvard in a huge way... they will be gunning to beat us and our loss has many teams feeling we're not that good. I think our boys will be up for the challenge and it should be the start of a nice streak. GET EM HOYAS!

Harvard will be a good test, but one we should pass just based on what we have shown to date. We seem to have the most trouble with top defensive teams like ODU and Temple. We seem to be able to handle teams that like to get after it on offense. I also think JT3 will lock down on Lin and make the other guys beat us. Until I read this thread I was not sure if harvard could beat us if Lin was locked down, but now I am a little anxious.

Fortunately of our BE season, Temple and ODU are ranked Higher then all but 1 BE team (Cuse) for KenPom's def eff, Temple is much closer to 'Cuse but ODU is closer to 3-4 of the BE teams. Harvard is better then about 1/2 of our league for def eff and off eff, so it will be interesting to see how we perform against them. Additionally from KenPom, Harvard is is ranked behind 12 of our 16 teams, but they are RIGHT behind Cinci and is in fact VERY similar except that Harvard has the better O and Cinci with the better D. Also, Harvard is the 46th most consistent team in BBall, where as Cincy is 219 and G-town is 137. Just some food for thought.
