As I procrastinate in writing a term paper, I suddenly started thinking about things in life that I find are overrated. I decided to make a tentative list:
- The Departed
- Chicago Style Pizza
- Venice
- Universal Studios LA (as opposed to the awesomeness that is their Orlando park)
- Bon Jovi
- The Rosslyn GUTS bus
- Booeymongers
Feel free to attack anything on here or add to the list.

Telling people to "Lighten Up Francis" as a way of casting aside their arguments - this was tired in like 1985 when Stripes had been out for 4 years, it's 2009 now.

I have to disagree here. As a new Chicago resident, I've found it to be amazing. I'm a big fan of the crust. Things I find to be overrated b/c they're bad but considered good:New Year's Eve. St. Elmo's Fire. Things I find to be overrated b/c they're good, but not as good as their reputation (I call them Jeters)In & Out The NFL. Thanksgiving Turkey

Fixed the title. In this thread no one cares about what you think about politics, only about pop culture issues and things like food.

Overrated
Gone With The Wind Citizen Kane - kind of, since it's overrated until you realize that the reason you think it's weak is because it did everything that everybody copied the first time Arrested Development - I've never enjoyed this series Gears of War The city of Memphis
Underrated
Brickbreaker on Blackberry - surprisingly addictive and amazing at killing time Raiders of the Lost Ark - Almost never makes lists of great movies, rarely gets on TV, but if it's on, you're watching at least twenty minutes.
But I pay special attention to
Fourth of July - Best. holiday. EVER. Parades? Check. Good food? Check. Fireworks? Check. No plans? That's cool, too. Really, when was the last time you had a bad Fourth of July?

I respectfully disagree with TBird about both In&Out and Thanksgiving Turkey. Both define a level of awesomeness reached by few other things in this life. Also respectfully disagree with SFHoya about IPAs, but I guess that's a personl preference thing; I happen to love 'em (Greenflash? Lagunitas? Stone? yum yum ... all from Cali).
However, I DO like how TBird breaks down the categories of overratedness (i.e. bad but considered good versus good but not as goos as reputed).
Overrated; not good: - the entire entertainment media ... TMZ, magazines, E!, etc. - Maroon 5 - 80s fashions - Potbelly (the line out the door everyday? Inconceivable.)
Overrated; not as good as reputation: - pretty much every new, swanky gastropub/lounge in DC - the proliferation of social media / networking sites - doing everything in "teams" at work

shunnnnnnnnnn! My brain is fried at the moment, so I know I'm forgetting a lot, but for now: Overrated (not as good as reputation):- Angelina Jolie - Family Guy after the first season - Twitter - Most reality TV - The Matrix Trilogy Overrated (not good):- The Da Vinci Code (book) - chain Mexican food (chipotle, qdoba, etc) (also, totally agree with vcjack/tbird on Venice/New Year's Eve)

Gladiator (Best Picture? Really?) Not necessarily disagreeing but what do you think was the best movie of 2000? Crouching Tiger? Chocolat? And agree on Saving Private Ryan (or "Omaha Beach + Mediocre War Movie") but big disagree on balsamic vinegar. Good balsamic = tasty as hell

Everything Judd Apatow (and Seth Rogan for that matter) has done since "The 40-Year Old Virgin."
Animal Collective.
Any reality TV show that someone says is good is automatically overrated.
Twitter.
Modern Warfare 2 (it was good, but it was too short and too easy).
Christmas parties.
New Year's Eve definitely.
Vampires.
Fajitas.

Wow - this thread is like a collectively written Sports Guy column.
Sports Guy is overrated.
And so is in & Out Burger...
P.S. I don't actually believe that about In n Out Burger. Those are quite tasty. But I do love the way West Coasters react when you even imply that it's not the greatest burger on earth (it's not). Like you just casually asked whether their kid is retarded or something.

I think that is a pretty darn good list Boz, but pump the brakes on Fajitas son...that is my go-to Mexican dish. If you think Fajitas are overrated, and you are in the DC area, go to Rio Grande in Bethesda...i dream about those fajitas weekly up here in NYC.

I respectfully disagree with TBird about both In&Out and Thanksgiving Turkey. Both define a level of awesomeness reached by few other things in this life. Look, In & Out is very good. It might be the best fast food burger. But Californians act like it's quite literally the greatest burger available / possibly the best food you can purchase. It's overrated. And Thanksgiving Turkey is good, but let's be honest here--Thanksgiving dinner is all about the mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing and the pie. You screw those up and the meal is ruined. You make a mediocre turkey and you can dump gravy on it and you'll survive.

I agree completely with TBird regarding In & Out. While its definitely solid and I had no complaints, I just feel that its waaaay over-hyped by Californians. I thought it was good, but I was honestly a bit disappointed after I tried it because I had heard so much about it.
I think Californians identify with it so much that the sentimental value it has makes them believe its much better than it actually is. Again, as TBird said, I definitely thought it was good, but the hype has reached such obscene levels that its almost impossible for it to live up to expectations.
It was definitely not even close to the best burger I've had, and that's what Californians make you expect with all their talk.

Ok, we could go around and around about In&Out all day. It's not the best burger ever; anyone who says that it is either expressing a personal preference or has never been outside of fast food land. It's just really freakin' good. It might be over hyped but I don't think it's over rated. And regular vs. animal style is part of the Cali mystique. Besides, any Californian will tell you that the best food you can purchase is fish tacos . Re: fajitas: um ..... huh?

So, Jersey Shore (MTV show) is somehow 'rated'? People actually watch it and think it is OK?
I'd say MTV as a whole is pretty overrated.
Also overrated:
cats
the new Mercedes S-class (nice work making a mercedes look like a Ford Taurus or something along those lines)
Coldplay
Tony Romo

I forgot a big one that has annoyed me recently: dumb Facebook applications. Seriously, I will never understand the appeal of Farmville, Mafia Wars, Bejeweled Blitz, etc.
jgalt - DMB is a good one, I agree.
