I'm not sure what I think, but I find it interesting the dynamic occurring between 2009 and 2010 classes.
The team obviously needs some help for next year, particularly a guard with a handle to help out Chris and man to play PF/rebound/defend.
Latavious and Vee may be those guys.
However, if they come on... our 2010 class will only have a scholarship IF Monroe leaves before his junior year. This is somewhat of a departure from previous strategy.
Of course, there could be transfers or other early entrants. But it's interesting to see how the dynamic has seemingly changed in regards to taking 2009s.
I wonder how much a quality 2011 class plays in as well?

As we know, the scholarship situation always seems to work itself out. But I agree this is an interesting thought SF. Originally remember this was going to be a two person class anyways so we would be bringing on one more than planned if we got both. The fact that JTIII is offering these two is probably for a number of factors. 1) sees the need to add some depth (esp as we had a prior commit from a big as is) 2.) having the shot at a 5 star like Williams now is a good thing to use. 3) it's not guaranteed that either of them (let alone both) will even commit at all. While we have a good shot we all know nothing's a given till they say so and sign that dotted line. I don't think I will start to worry too much yet about the scholie situation until it becomes a problem. Who knows what the off season will bring, who will leave early etc etc. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

Yeah, I agree. Mostly just thinking aloud.

Interesting. IMO, JT3 should go for two in the 09 class. The rest will take care of itself after we win another BE title next year.

If both VS and LW commit does that mean there is no scholarship for Roscoe Smith unless someone leaves (transfer or NBA)? I wonder if it means anything with regards to Roscoe?

Only if we believe that absolutely No One will transfer or depart early, or otherwise leave during the next two years. Given our track record, the chances of that happening are close to zero.

SF mentioned it, but what is the general depth of the 2011 class? If the highly unlikely scenario that no one leaves after next year and gtown gets two guys for 09, how much is the team missing out on by not having anyone in 2010?

You got Markel and Lubick for 2010, so there are them. If there is one schollie left then its Roscoe's whenever he wants it. I believe Kendrick and Odom and concurrent plans. Of course I think they'll be at least two for 2010; At which time Kendrick would get the "extra" one. I think the staff may be counting on Greg to be gone and maybe even Lat staying one year. Either way, the grinding has to continue/pick up by III cause the others haven't built their skills yet or need to change the "smooth/cool" approach very quickly. Imo

I also just worry about Latavious for right now. Whose to say Clark won't tighten up his handle over the summer. afterall, it's his first year.

The likelihood of Greg being here after NEXT year is really tiny. Other than an injury, he's gone after next year (if he's not gone after this year), or something has gone wrong. Really we should all hope that next year is a great one all around and that he goes to the NBA as a top 3 pick... because if JTIII doesn't find a way to feature him enough to keep his stock high (he's already the 2 or 3rd most attractive big guy to most scouts), other top big guys aren't going to want to come here in the future. So, yea, I think barring a serious injury Greg is gone after next year, assuming he does not bolt after this year. And that scholarship will be Roscoe's if he wants it. I am not as convinced on the need for a guard as others, just because I think Clark is gonna demand a ton of minutes next year and because I assume that his turnover problem is something he's gonna work on. He has shown me more than enough to think that he's going to be terrific the next 3 years. The rebounder, though, we need, and if LW is that, good. Re: 2011, there are a lot of good local prospects and a lot of good players in general that we seem to be on. And, we figure to have a good 4 or more scholarships, with CW, Austin, Omar and Julian all set to graduate, possibly Nikita too though he has the option to stay another year. So 2011 figures to be a pretty big class and possibly a very good class too. We've already got 2 of the major need areas for 2010 taken care of with Starks (point) and Lubick (big man)... TBH I'm not even sure a wing player is really needed in 2010, considering that CW/AF/JC will still be holding down the guard rotation (backed up by OW and possibly Vee) and Hollis Thompson should be holding down the 3 spot (backed up by Nikita). Of course if Roscoe Smith wants to play for you, you take him, and we've got some other good wings in 2010 with interest... but I don't think we're going to be in need of 2 swingmen (Smith/Kendrick etc), assuming Hollis is the player we think he is. So I guess in summary, 1 more scholarship (Gregs) for 2010 will be enough, and if we have 2 (ie we miss on LW or VS) that's plenty... And in 2011 when we'll definitely have plenty of scholarships, we'll probably have a big class. Here's a list of some of the good locals in 2011, and we're also on some guys out of the area as well: www.capitolhoops.com/classof2011.htm

Assuming no NBA or transfers and the prospective commitment of Williams and Sanford C-Monroe, Vaughn (2) PF-Sims, Williams (2) SF- Summers, Nikita, Omar, Hollis (4) SG- Freeman, Clark (2) PG- Wright , Sanford (2)
Thats 12 minus 1 for Senior Summers so 11 for 2010 if you Add Lubick and Starks that gives you the max 13 for 2010. HOWEVER this would mean no early entry in EITHER this year or next year for Greg (chris austin etc...) and NO transfers. SURELY at least ONE will open up if not TWO more for 2010

or it could look like this next year
C- Vaughn, Sims (2) PF- Nikita, Hollis (2) SF- Austin, Omar (2) SG- Clark (1) PG- Wright (1)...
MY PREDICTION and this is just me being throwin out a scenario
C- Vaughn/ Williams PF- Sims/ Nikita SF- Hollis/ Omar SG- Austin/Jason PG- Wright
Leave us with 2 more for 2010.

Does the board think that Omar will stay? He appears to end up in the same role as Tyler. He would be better served playing in DIV II like Egerson. Depending on who stays and who comes out we could lose Henry to transfer also. We really need to bring in at least two and preferably three more for next year. One can get a baseball scholarship, if needed..

1. Yes. He knew coming in that there were some really talented guys ahead of him, and that his role would be a 4 year player off the bench. Possible that he has soured on that idea since committing, but he knew there were 2 all-american guards coming in the same class as him and he came anyway, so I do think he will go the Tyler route and try to be productive in his role rather than leaving for a worse academic school, getting more minutes and ending up in the same place.
2. Egerson did not go to DII but to a mid-major. Pretty big difference between the CAA and DII.
3. Losing Henry is certainly within the realm of possibility, but hopefully he stays and hones his game. I still like his long-term potential very much and it would definitely be a loss if he goes, so we should all be pulling for him to do well for the balance of our games this season.
4. This post (and now mine) probably will get deleted because they are super-strict about not talking about transfers here. But I thought I'd replay anyway in the event you see this before the moderators do.

Why is losing Henry within the realm of possibility? Is there any indication he's not happy?

Thanks RB, to me the CAA is not division one, but you are correct. Guru, Henry has had words with people about no PT, if Greg and Dajuan stay, he will be about the same PT as the last couple of games.

If we lose him because we haven't been giving him minutes during a season when he clearly appeared to be deserving of more minutes and when we really needed help from a big off the bench, and everyone on hoyatalk was screaming all season to give him more minutes... There will be a lot of unhappy campers on this board.
