Right. As it is, Georgetown gets third choice of dates and has very little flexibility to schedule marquee out of conference games or Saturday night dates because of the Caps. I am sure it is their fault the ice conditions are sloppy though.

Its true, as the ONLY NHL team to share an arena with college basketball, I'm sure the Caps are at a huge disadvantage...

Strongest indication that this author is woefully ignorant: "God knows the school has the endowment for the project."

Pretty sure the Wizards aren't going anywhere...
How about your damn ice is ruining our shooting percentage?
I'll gladly switch our noon games with their 7 pm time slot.

College Basketball is more popular than hockey.
Bummer for Caps fans, but blame Gary Bettman. Hockey is dead in this country.
At least we're on ESPN.

Silly. But, would be nice to get Slick Willy on a fundraising project for something on-campus.....

I love how everyone who doesn't know G'town acts like the school has all this money to throw everyone - anyone remotely affiliated with the school knows otherwise.
And has it not occurred to these morons that kicking GU might may make the situation WORSE because Verizon would lose the money GU pays them to rent the arena?

Strongest indication that this author is woefully ignorant: "God knows the school has the endowment for the project." He also conveniently forgets that the owner of the Caps is a Georgetown grad and on the board of directors for the University. I doubt he's going to do anything to hurt the Hoyas

College Basketball is more popular than hockey. Have you BEEN to a Caps game this season, or watched them? They have sold out every game almost at ticket prices ranging from $30-$120 face, 41 home games. I would say they get the priority rightfully and, at least in this town, hockey is the more popular sport for now. At least to attend anyway..... As a Caps fan too, the ice issue is big. It started last year as being a big deal because the team was good and other players around the league were complaining about it. Soft ice causes injuries because of more slips and the such. Ted has addressed it a few times too. The problem is, Verizon is one of the most used arenas in the country with over 200 events a year--its hard to keep ice cold with all that body heat.

Oh, I know they get priority. Even if they weren't any good, attendance would be better and the prices much higher.
Hockey is still dead in this country and I somewhat enjoy taunting fans of the sport.
The bigger thing is that this guy isn't all that bright if he thinks Verizon is going to walk away from tenancy. Fixed costs are huge at stadiums, and I imagine anything that draws 10,000 per game is revenue they aren't going to walk away from, whether it is Georgetown or the circus.

Hockey should be played on roller skates and the problem would disappear.

The NY Rangers share an arena with a college basketball team. And MSG is possibly the busiest arena in the country.. Rangers, Knicks, SJU, Holiday tournaments, Pre and Post season NITs, Concerts, HS tournaments, Circus, Dog show, you name it.
If you ever get the chance to see the change over from Basketball Court to Hockey, don't miss it. A remarkable conversion.

Maybe we could get Ted to construct some kind of giant device that would block out the sun over Washington so that February days would never flirt with 60 degrees? Ted's take on the situation, which seems to have fed this blog item, seems to be a bit more nuanced: www.tedstake.com/?p=3478As for our alums always whining about how we have no money, you've really got to take into consideration the fact that the university's been run exclusively by humanities majors for the last two centuries and just coincidentally have been making terrible financial decisions over and over again for decades on end. And as hoyabinx alludes, if you go to a Caps games, be forewarned: their fans don't sit lifelessly in the stands for two hours at a time, they actually even seem to enjoy themselves.

Non story. Have you ever heard hockey players say the loved the ice surface? In Buffalo, where the arena is almost exclusively used for hockey (with the occasional lax game mixed in) they constantly complain about the ice.

If you ever get the chance to see the change over from Basketball Court to Hockey, don't miss it. A remarkable conversion. And the Rangers ice is notoriously terrible. As a big hockey fan, I would love to see hockey teams have personal arenas where they can set the climate conditions to ones that are conducive to hockey (also, I would like to see teams below the Mason-Dixon line eliminated and brought up north). However, as a realist, I know that such a goal would never occur because it's not economically feasible.
