Katz: Big East on lookout after Hoyas' statement victory sports.espn.go.com/ncb/columns/story?columnist=katz_andy&id=3799189&campaign=rss&source=ESPNHeadlines"After hosting the Panthers, the Hoyas go to Notre Dame, host Providence and Syracuse, go to Duke for an escape from the Big East (yikes!) and then host West Virginia, before going on a three-game road trip to Seton Hall, Cincinnati and Marquette. That just gets Georgetown through January. "This league is brutal," Thompson III said. "It's just one game [over Connecticut]. I don't think big picture. Clearly, beating a terrific team on the road in the first game is a very, very big win and hopefully it means something. But at the same time we've got to move on." Boeheim said what he learned -- what everyone was educated on about Georgetown on Monday -- was that "they're way better than people thought. They might not have been ready early in the year for Tennessee . They're a little bit young, but not as young as everyone thought."

thanks MCI. very good analysis. i am not as harsh as they are about greg's rebounding. his box out technique is good. just needs to get stronger. also greg missed out on some rebounds when we went offense for defense in second half. i don't go crazy looking at rebound numbers with our team.

Rebounding so far this year has not been good, but it was much better in the UCONN game. We need to keep moving in that direction. And yes, that article was awesome... thanks MCI. A couple of excerpts for those who have not yet read it.... read the following....then go read the whole piece! EXCERPTS:
GREG MONROE Considering the way he’s played this season, and the potential he shows, it’s probably not a stretch to call Greg Monroe the best freshman prospect in America thus far. Monroe has stepped up and produced consistently from day one for Georgetown, establishing himself as arguably the most important player on this top-ten ranked team, while erasing many of the doubts we had about him from his high school days. In this particular game against UConn, he thoroughly outplayed projected lottery pick Hasheem Thabeet from start to finish on both ends of the floor, showing an incredibly versatile skill-set and a feel for the game unlike that of any big man in the college ranks.DaJuan SummersGeorgetown’s leading scorer thus far, DaJuan Summers appears to have turned the corner midway through his college career and become a far more productive and efficient player. Not only is his scoring rate up by 25%, he’s also shooting the ball much more efficiently from the field, going from hitting 43% of his field goal attempts as a sophomore to 54% as a junior. From beyond the arc he’s making 42.5% of his 3-point attempts as opposed to 34% last season, while getting to the free throw line at a substantially better rate (7.4 attempts per-40 pace adjusted compared to 4.7). These numbers will likely drop as Georgetown enters the tougher part of their schedule with 17 more Big East games on tap, but his improvement thus far should be duly noted. [/blockquote]

I'll ask this again...has any Hoya forward/big man put up good rebounding numbers since JTIII has arrived? I don't think so.
Jeff Green? No. Especially considering his minutes and how he would play the five when Roy sat. Roy Hibbert? His numbers were disappointing for a guy his size. Ewing Jr? He came in with a rep as a good rebounder but neverr made that much of a difference on the boards for the Hoyas. Summers? Perhaps the worst of them all on that front.
I think now with Monroe it further proves the system prevents any of our guys from having stand out numbers in terms of rebounding. Considering how much time our big men stay out there on the perimeter ths is gonna happen. Folks, the rebounding complaints about Monroe are the same said about Hibbert last season. While Roy is taller Greg is more mobile and plays more minutes. But his totals as well aren't what you expect from a big man of his capabilities.

Greg started the season poorly, but his reb % are now similar to Jeff as a freshman. They aren't good yet -- and remember Jeff had Hibbert on the floor at times whereas Greg is always the primary rebounder.
Hibbert's reb % were significantly better for his career.
As for the team, the combination of Hibbert to Monroe and Summers' regression have hurt us.

Again I would like to point out what came to me watching the Hoyas at MCI recently. When we shoot we frequently ALL immediately run down the court to set up our half court defense which i would like to repeat I think is the best Hoya half court defense EVER and probably the best half court defense in college bball today. So i think that emphasis on half court defense has a little something to do with not getting too many offensive rebbies. Just one man's observation. Night .

Saw that too... but, I think there has to be a balance. Also, vs. Memphis, I saw some Hoyas (Wright and Freeman) looking at the play when someone else was shooting. It looks like JT3 and staff must be focusing on rebounding because we're improving. Saturday will be a big test.

From Gottlieb's blog on ESPN.com: Thoughts from across the hoops landscape: • After discussing UConn with one of their coaches after watching the Huskies beat Fairfield, I am not stunned they were thumped by Georgetown. While Kemba Walker may have started like the best freshman in America, he was clearly nervous against Gonzaga and seems in a freshman rut. A.J. Price was magnificent against Gonzaga, but that is really his only breathtaking performance thus far this year. And while Hasheem Thabeet is much better offensively this season, honestly, it seems more impressive because of how far he has come, not how great he is at this point. • With Chris Wright healthy, unlike last year, DeJuan Summers emerging as the Hoyas' clear go-to guy and Greg Monroe being as skilled overall as any big man in America, Georgetown matched up well, played great and seems to be further along than UConn at this point … stay tuned. insider.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=3805688&name=ncbexperts
