USC is doing their "we're so good we dont' have to show up routine". Watched the TIVO of their Arizona State game and they didn't play well at all--and word is this weekend they'll not have a lot of frontline players---Joe McKnight for instance--because they are banged up or in McKnight's words "If it was another game--I could play--but we should be okay this week".
This is attitude that has cost them games in past and I'll be honest--if I were going to attack USC--I'd run right at them. ASU had success going at them but decided to have Rudy Carpenter throw on 7 step drops on a broken ankle.
I'll say this-USC wins an ugly game tomorrow against the worst Pac 10 team I've seen in my lifetime--Washington State. It'll be one of those 28-10 type of games and it's a game where a kid who is still trying to make his mark (McKnight) should be playing and getting 3-4 TD's in a half.
SC's problem is they are too "easy/soft". They let guys miss practices and games and there is no continuity and it's why they struggle against inferior teams--because they don't have half their team show up and think they'll "out-talent" opponents.
If you can lose to Stanford a year ago at home--you can lose to Washington State on road. Now I don't expect that to happen--but it could if you start thinking the same as in past. Until Carroll gets tougher with these guys and makes them build momentum--they'll lose--and I think it's coming next weekend in Tuscon and wouldn't be shocked to see Stanford beat them again either.

"Don't get me wrong. I am not, in any way slighting Texas, and think they played a great game. My point though is that if we had beaten LSU by 10 for example ... something like 34-24, then I think the National perception of the Gators would be about the same, but the total woodshed we gave them, lowered their perception tremendously. In a strange way, I think that could reflect negatively on us. They aren't "as good as advertised" because we mauled them. Texas on the other hand, won both a gallant and galiant battle with Oklahoma. Therefore, Texas is "that good" and Oklahoma is almost "that good.""
Huh? This is absurd. While I appreciate your attempting to downplay the Gators a bit, which is a welcome relief, I think anyone who is thinking clearly would realize based on that performance that (a) LSU is overrated and (b) despite its loss to Mississippi, Florida must be pretty good. And their current ranking reflects that. And I agree that if they run the table, they will clearly be in the championship mix, provided that a Big 12 team and Penn State don't go undefeated. I would say, though, that if either Oklahoma runs the table, or Texas stumbles once to a strong opponent but then runs the table, that either of those teams would have a pretty strong case vis-a-vis Florida.

I don't think that win hurt Florida at all--it just exposed LSU and Miles a bit. It NEVER hurts to blow a team out-so I don't get the Hifi logic there--but I do think it might end up a case of LSU not being very good--as they really should've lost to a bad Auburn team--and that at time was a "great win" seen by media. Now it looks to be a mediocre showing against a bad team. It's league play though--and every win is a good one in leagues--as they know your personnel, etc...but still think LSU was getting a bit too much hype after that win. Florida is a very good team and one that will be in contention at end of year.

penn state will be playing for the national title against usc. just a hunch. that would be the last straw with this bcs formula. Penn State is not even a top ten team. Put Penn State in the SEC or Big XII South and they are a middle of the pack team...and don't even get me started on USC!

Well it's official, the Cougs are the worst team I've ever seen play CFB. Now with expanded coverage--I am able to see more teams, so I might be omitting some really awful teams prior to modern day coverage--but the Cougs have held 1 Pac 10 opponent under 60--UCLA.
If you can imagine the OU-Texas A&M game in '03--the 77-0 game where Stoops took "mercy" on Aggies--this was a million times WORSE then that game. If Carroll wanted--he could've scored 150 pts and had 1000+ yards of total offense. He left a TD on field at end of First Half--so the score should've been worse and he threw 1 pass in entire 2nd Half--which was from Mitch Mustain. Played 4 QB's, all 3 healthy RB's---and ran zone plays (most simple in FB) and Cougs were inept.
Sad thing is--Pac 10 rules only allow 65 men on travel squad--so being a road game--USC couldn't go deeper to their bench. They left 5 starters behind in Los Angeles, McKnight traveled but didn't dress, and Cougs still were this awful.
WORST TEAM EVER. JUST "COUG" IT!
Best part of game was Petros telling a story about an owl attacking him on an island as an 18 year old, when game was out of reach--with 10 minutes in First Quarter, and then his "key for Cougs" being they need to force 8+ turnovers to compete--not win.
COUGIN' IT!

One point during the Michigan - Penn State game Sean McDonough was talking to his booth partner about PSU's game next week in Columbus and he said "Now everyone knows you are the biggest Ohio State homer out there"
Sean has a nice sense of irony doesn't he?
(and I'm beyond done getting upset about the Badgers, they'll be lucky to get 2 more wins)

penn state is a very good team. anyone that thinks otherwise, just doesn't know what they are talking about. saying they would be a middle of the pack team in the big 12 or sec is ridiculous.

is it too late for me to change to a psu-texas championship game prediction? i can't wait for the texas-texas tech game. anyone care to guess the over/under? Don't fall for the Texas Tech hype--they suck. Texas by 5 TD's in that game. I liked Texas and Penn State from get go--and Penn State is good--but I think they'll lose to Ohio State this weekend. BTW--Chase Daniel is a FRAUD. I don't want to hear about his "greatness". The bigger the stage, the weaker he plays. Just because he looks like Ben Rothliesberger's little brother doesn't mean he deserves to be treated like he's won anything at Missouri. Maybe if the Tiger program hadn't acted like chicken feces and bought their way out of games against teams in non conference (winnable games too--against Miami and Iowa) they'd be more prepared for teams that at least try and stop them. If some teams lose and Texas is #1 and Oklahoma is in top group with shot at a "rematch"--please do NOT make that happen. Remember the clamor for the "Michigan-Ohio State" rematch people wanted to see because of the "great game". How did that turn out? I've liked Texas all year--but the hype is getting out of control now. I belive they are good and a lot more mentally tough--but I also believe they could go down like Ohio State did 2 years ago if they face certain teams. They have a crude running game and 2 WR's--which against some teams out there wouldn't be as effective. Penn State is more balanced--and their ignorance in playing that clown Morelli for so long is being exposed. Clark fits their offense and is a playmaker. Of course their is also a chance that 50% of their team could be arrested in a coke deal by time they play Ohio State this weekend too. It's going to be an SEC team vs PSU or Texas most likely. So they should tell rest of country that you are fighting for one spot.

Here's the problem with TTech: defense. The Sips (UT) can score big but they can also play a game in the 20-24 range, while Tech needs to have the game go into the 40's to win. It's akin to those old Loyola Marymount basketball teams--they couldn't win in a slowdown game.
Meanwhile, hard times ahead down Highway 6. A&M might not win another game this season.

I know what you are saying and I might even take it a step further. I don't really remember Loyola Marymount actually winning many big games either. They would lose to anybody good 118-104.

I'm not going to complain about the rankings at all. Like most of you here, I am in favor of a giant clusterfu** to hopefully move us that much closer to a playoff. But one comment about the BCS rankings: I remember hearing one of the BCS guys explaining that they chose computer rankings that discount or even totally disregard margin of victory. I know for instance, that they use the "Elo-Chess" Sagarin ranking, which is the least accurate of the 3 Sagarin rankings according to the man himself -- Jeff Sagarin. For example, Florida is #2 in the "Pure Points Predictor," which Sagarin claims to be his most accurate for predicting future outcomes. Personally, I don't think the Gators are deserving of being ranked #2 yet, but I think that #19 or whatever the Elo-Chess shows, isn't very realistic either. Granted, it is all about winning and losing, but I think that disregarding what happened on the field is a bit of an overcorrection in the opposite direction.

The BCS uses the "Elo Chess" for two main reasons: the people who run the BCS were worried about giving incentive to coaches to run up the score (which they already have because the polls take into account margin of victory; and because they don't understand math and the very real fact that 99% of team can't and don't "play to margin of victory" -- there isn't a great team out there winning only close games because it chooses when to play better.

I agree with you to that extent. In fact I made a similar point on our board. Two thirds of the BCS already takes into account margin of victory, as there is no way that the subjective nature of voters will allow disregarding the actual score. But that being said, I still question the logic of using a ranking that is admittedly less accurate, regardless of the reasoning.

Doesn't Texas play Oaklahoma State this weekend? I think they might have a better chance of derailing their title hopes than Texas Tech (not that I know anything about OSU, just that they seem less "gimicky" than Tech)
