Not sure I like the idea of Sims playing D on the perimeter. I like that it shows athleticism, but I don't want him out there picking up cheap fouls on guards.

Like it or not, in the man-to-man defense III likes to run -- switching almost every ball screen -- our bigs will get matched up with opposing guards on the perimeter a lot. Being able to handle this is important for our bigs, so it's good to hear that Sims has ability in this department.

My thoughts on today, with a focus on Vaughn --
1. Vaughn still showed himself to largely be a below the rim player, but he showed great diversity on the offensive end (and the results showed) - mid-range jumper, hook shots, putbacks, and varied post moves. He prefers to face up on the offensive end, which will make for an interesting dynamic since we don't have a back to the basket post player this season.
2. Vaughn is mechanical in his approach, which is good and bad. On the one hand, he keeps the ball high, so he "plays bigger," and he keeps the same form on his shot, so he is accurate and true. On the other hand, his mechanical approach makes it tougher to see how his skill set expands, if that makes sense.
3. He would do well to strengthen his legs with an eye toward being quicker up and down the court and quicker off the floor for rebounds. His lack of explosion will make it tough for him to rebound against taller players and against bouncier athletes, and we need him to rebound. Cardio conditioning should also be emphasized. He doesn't always run up and down the court, and it is unclear whether he's just conserving or whether he needs the break.
4. Vaughan and Freeman seemed to hit it off well off the court, which may be a result of their days on Assault. This might sound cheesy, but it was good to see Vaughn's family there to support him.
5. Overall, I was impressed by Vaughn today and thought his performance improved over Saturday. It is hard to judge his potential because of how he plays, but I would think that he should have the NBA in his sights. He has 3 years to play, which also means 3 years of JT3's coaching. Time to put the work in and make things happen.
Others will cover Freeman, undoubtedly, and might make a few comments about Jansen's development. Other than that, good to see Jeff Green's dad there.

And if he is in the game at the same time as Monroe, there are BE PF's who shoot from the perimeter and somone is going to have to guard them.

Thanks Jersey for the report from today's Kenner. As for Vaughan, Sweetney was a "below the rim player" too. Didn't hurt us any. I am curious about his height -- many different reports on the two boards.

My recap is here: hoyatalk2.proboards48.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=general&thread=16641An important excerpt: A cautionary note then for those making Kenner League plans this summer: The schedule being handed out at the Kenner League is totally different from the schedule posted online at GUHoyas.com. I'm not talking like a game here or there--the ENTIRE THING is completely different. Matchups are all shuffled around, certain teams are playing on days they didn't used to be, etc.
Of particular note for Hoya fans, there is no longer a Clyde's-Tombs game on the "regular season" Kenner League schedule.
The ostensible reason for the changes, we discovered, is that Kenner League lost a team (PG Storm) at some point. GUHoyas schedules include them, the McD versions do not.Just today, the schedule caused Clyde's game to be moved back (and be played against a different team) and there to be a no-show in the original Clyde's slot because one team (M&A) wasn't even supposed to be playing today originally and was logically not around. I copied down the schedule JerseyHoya picked up at the snack bar for Saturday 12 July. Take note if you planned on going to see Tombs or Clyde's, b/c both are playing earlier than it said on the GUHoyas.com version. New times/opponents for 12 July: 2:15 Tombs-DC Jammers 3:30 Clyde's-Bearcats 5:30 M&A-Madness All Stars I may have just stopped writing b/c I won't be around on Sunday 13 July, but I ALSO only have M&A as playing that day, NOT Tombs or Clydes. Someone needs to double check that.

As for "Cheesy" -- it's NOT cheesy. I agree with you that it is GREAT when family members come to support their kids. I've met lots of family members at games over the years. It's a GU/JT3 strength. And in the same post, you mentioned Jeff's Dad was there. That should be confirmation enough of the role that family plays on this GU team. As far as I'm concerned, he and Jeff's mom are welcome at any Hoya game, as well as every pre and post event.. for life!

Seeing the recent news about Othella Harrington's option with the Bobcats not being renewed I got to thinking about how I first saw O play in the Kenner League before he made his official Georgetown debut. Then I got to thinking about how many star college players did I see suit up for the KL over the years.
I recall that in the Kenner game involving Othella (my first Kenner League game), his Tombs team faced a squad that had a relatively unknown guy on the roster named Moochie Norris. And Norris just took Joey Brown apart with his dribble. Back then the one thing I knew I could count on from Joey was splendid defense but he had no answers for Moochie that evening. Nothing like Kenner League memories.

I think Vaughn is between 6'8" and 6'9" but he plays bigger because he keeps the ball high and shoots from a high position. But, his height is a problem on the glass since he can't clear space like Sweetney or Blair, and he doesn't have the same leg strength. He would have had trouble on the glass with Greene if Greene chose to play within the arc and not volume shoot.

he is 6'8-6'9 250 right? Not 6'3 250. He'll be fine.

haven't seen Kenner but ??Sims = Scruggs?? Haven't seen him in Kenner, but what I saw of Sims in HS, he's definitely a 5, whereas Scruggs was really a 3.

He looks like someone who will be a solid contributor, and gets up and down the floor pretty well, but he is not an athletic stud. This is not going to get anyone very excited, but I actually thought for a moment that he was Rhese Gibson when I first saw him- similar size/build and appearance. His relatively polished offensive game made me forget those comparisons, but for those who wonder about his physical presence, he is not far off.

Comparing to Macklin, I think Vaughan is a much better fit for Gtown O. He can hit an outside shot, hit free throws, and has more post moves then just the running hook. Book him for 15 to 20 minutes this year and he won't be the offensive liability that Mack was last year.

Surprisingly, for all the talk of his three point range, he was 0-2 last year, so unless Hamilton was restraining him or he's improved, I'm not sure that will be in his regular season arsenal. He did shoot 69% from the line last year and actually got fouled a decent bit for the amount of PT and shots he took. (He would've been close to Roy for team lead in FTA/FGA). Vaughn's issues were that he was terribly turnover prone -- would have been worst on our team on a per possession basis -- and he didn't grab rebounds much better than Vernon. Maybe that comes with more PT, I don't know, but like with Macklin I'm not sure how he posted such poor defensive rebounding numbers last year.

Does anyone know what the revised schedule is for Sunday? Is it true that neither Tombs nor Clyde's will be playing? Oh: Hi everyone, this is my first post. Been reading these boards for years and I am consistently impressed by the insightful analysis that so many here contribute. I'll try to keep up
