Buckeye70 - this is not the Villanova football thread. No one cares. And we're all bitter because it's around four months until practice starts.
Now:
" It's one thing to play (and beat) Rutgers,"
HAHAHAHAHA. Really, if you have been following college football for any length of time, this is hilarious.
"But when we played Temple a few years back in the Linc, the first college football game
there, there were 31,000 there and about 40% of them were 'Nova fans.
And we play Penn often in Franklin Field to crowds of about 18-20,000 and Villanova gets
at least half of that crowd."
www.ncaa.org/about/div_criteria.html gives standards for I-A attendance. These standards are 15,000 paid.
Now, SFS people, stay with me here. "at least half of" 18-20K is 10K. "About 40%" of 31K is 12.4K.
So. Villanova, playing against its massive city rivals, in a rare David and Goliath scenario, gets .... less than the minimum required not to get kicked out of I-A.
Now, I can hear you. "But the lower attendance is only because we're not I-A!" The problem is that Temple shows how Philadelphia will support bad college football. "If the opponent's name is recognizable, the fans show up". No. I went to cheer on a Michael Vick-led team at the Vet against a bad Temple team in 1999. The score was 62-7 against a team that upset Tech in Blacksburg the previous year and with an opponent that seemed a good bet to play in the national championship with a Heisman-caliber quarterback. There were less than ten thousand in the stadium, and they were almost all Tech fans. Philadelphia has the good sense to ignore bad teams. And Villanova will be a bad team.
Delaware, a school that you do cite as "the only show(s) in town", is within the Philadelphia metro area. Even more importantly, it's also within driving distance of Navy and Maryland, who do have relatively successful programs. And Delaware draws twice what Nova does.
Accept it. Private schools in I-A football are in short supply (the only one west of the Rockies is Stanford). They lack the financial wherewithal and state assembly support to compete.
So. Summation. Please stop bringing up these points every six months. We're already a neurotic fan base as it is without scaring us about the BE breaking up.
P.S. On the bright side, if you do go I-A, you'll probably be able to beat ND as long as Weis is the coach.
KC HOYA: I don't get the criticism of my style of posting. Is it all that hard to read them?
EXORCIST: Hey, I can relate to neurotic, but some of your folks really need a timeout re: posters from other schools. Quite honestly, Elvado would be a candidate for banishment on a lot of sports forums. So I get it, Elvado, you hate Villanova. Your usage of "Cokie" McLain says a library-ful about yourself, nothing about the individual you seek to cutesy. You lost a game 23 years ago and you can't let it go? Pal, you need help.
DIAMOND HOYA: "...posting this same thing upon every visit..."?
You're kidding, of course. Tossing in Wolverine '71 makes sure I don't take your post seriously.
I didn't visit during hoops season (a mistake I may rectify this winter, by the way). I used to like this board and you still have many worthwhile posters who are actually interested in engaging in meaningful conversation, not...
1. Applying some idiotic standard where opposing points of view are held in contempt by way too many posters.
2. Engage in name-calling, condescending elitism.
3. Act like boorish edited.
Hey, have fun. I'm done here. You deserve what you get. Small numbers, continuing impress-each-other country club banter, and generally conduct that doesn't reflect very well on the university you hold dear.
Sic semper transit gloriae.
And so long. DFW Hoya and others, you're the goods. But I'd be ashamed to admit I attended the same school as some of these other folks.
For your consumption, this is the Buckeye as HoyaTalk participant R.I.P. Let the sarcasting cheers begin.
And GO NOVA!!!
