The inability to ... have ESPN talking heads shriek on campus...? Gone. This is a positive? Are you arguing for or against an on campus venue? For, of course. Just as ICC was built based on solar panels, the Jeff Green's Mom Arena/Allen Iverson Practice Facility with Who Wants To Play Dikembe's Team Tonight Court will be harness hot air. Dick Vitale alone will take care of all energy costs until such time as the sun explodes.

I would have taken Better than Ezra (just turned on "This Time of Year") or Weezer. It's just that Georgetown was (at least when I was there) relatively isolated from D.C. in general, and Merriweather and Wolf Trap are $30 for a show (and difficult to get to). The competition would really be Bender and the Smith Center. It wouldn't be bad. I agree that this is a "hey, it's not a bad thing" argument and isn't a crux. Better than Ezra played at McD a few years ago. Apparently McD has already passed your test for an oncampus arena.

If you build it (on campus/state of the art) they will come. And even I will come from Ct.!

This year, Georgetown has 6,500 non-student season ticket holders. In an 8,000-seat arena, you're squeezing out at least 5,500 of them, engaging in a bidding war, and thus, likely eliminating all of the positives that have come out of the development of Young Alumni season ticketing over the last three years.

It is pretty likely that ticket holders would earn their right to buy tickets through increased donations rather than victories in Hoya fan-offs... if people want to criticize Verizon's atmosphere this year, wait until the young alumn sections get taken away.

8,316 showed up for the South Florida game, which is a real setback to the run at the record.
For the next 4 games we now need to average 14,491 to set the record. Here were the numbers from each team's last visit to the booth:
Cincinnati: 13,106 Villanova: 11,816 St. Johns: 9,739 Louisville: Hasn't played in DC since 2/1/2000, and apparently the internet doesn't go back that far (or at least I'm too lazy to look for it).
The Feb. 1, 2000 game w/Louisville drew 7,189.--Admin

Well tonight ruined any shot of that, we're trying to think of ways to get people to a 9:00 Wed game though, perhaps that will be better than the pathetic output tonight*
* the people who were there were great, its just that there were so few

The numbers are for paid attendance, not actual attendance. just to be clear, this whole discussion is based on paid attendance, not actual attendance, right? so the number of students (and other season ticket holders) who show up to a particular game has no bearing on these figures/records??

Wow- that is shockingly low, except Super Tuesday probably took a big chunk. Also, I think attendance must reflect people in the seats at some level- if the reports of season ticket sales and student ticket sales are to be believed, tonight's attendance figure would be impossible in terms of paid tickets.

The on campus arena (that will be LESS than 8K) is a good idea for one reason and one reason only....to prepare for the inevitible rainy day. Can we leverage this success now to protect the program from the days (which will surely come) when we are a .500 Big East team and attendance drops back down to 8-9K and then all of the sudden its like Verizon Center has a gun to the head of our beloved Hoya basketball PROGRAM. Think in terms of the program, not just the team.

I actually thought the turnout in the lower bowl season ticket holders for a Tueday night game against USF was solid. I could barely scare up the interest to watch it on TV.

The numbers are for paid attendance, not actual attendance. just to be clear, this whole discussion is based on paid attendance, not actual attendance, right? so the number of students (and other season ticket holders) who show up to a particular game has no bearing on these figures/records?? It has to be actual attendance, or else someone has their numbers wrong. 3400 student season ticket-holders (WaPo) + 6500 non-student season ticket holders (THB's post above) = > last night's attendance. While we're on the subject of numbers, it was reported some time ago that our rent deal with Verizon is as follows: first $85K in ticket sales to Verizon, next $85k in ticket sales to GU, GU and Verizon split any additional ticket revenue. Verizon keeps all concessions and other charges. If anyone is aware of changes to that deal, please feel free to correct the numbers below. We know that 3,400 students have bought season ticket packages costing $85, or $5.667 per game (15 home games). If THB's figure above is correct, we know that 6,500 non-students have bought season ticket packages ranging from $60 to $1,500 (not including HHC donations, etc.) Let's assume the average price of a season ticket package is $195. Looking at the chart at the bottom of this page I think that's a pretty fair estimate. So that's 6500 people paying $13/game for their seats. $13 * 6,500 + $5.667 * 3400 = $103,767.8 So, assuming that lease still has the same arrangement, GU is in the black this year on ticket revenues from season ticket holders alone. But, even if all the season ticket holders (many of whom get a discount by buying tix in bulk) are showing up for every game, average attendance figures state there are an additional 2,457 people buying tickets. If we assume that, on average, these people pay $10/ticket, that's an additional $24,570 in ticket revenue. $103, 767.8 + $ 24,570 = $128,337.8 $128,337.8 - $85,000 owed to MCI/Verizon = $43,337.8 revenue for GU/game. There are other expenses, such as buying Metro Cards for students, that should be subtracted from GU's revenue. For ease of math, let's say GU's additional costs are $3,337.8/game. So that's $40k in revenue per game. Now, how would we do with a 7,000 seat on-campus venue like the one Esh proposed during his tenure? Well, if you want to seat those 3,400 student ticket-holders, now it's a 3,600 seat arena. But that's unreasonable -- let's say we let 1,500 students in, leaving 5,500 seats available to HHC members and the general public. And let's assume everyone still pays that average season ticket price of $13. That would mean almost exactly $80,000 in revenues for GU. However, I've lowballed the numbers for Verizon, so we're probably not too far off making the same amount we would with an on-campus arena. Obviously we'd make money on concessions on campus as well, and I'm not factoring that in. But I'm not factoring in the substantial cost of debt service and new construction either. Bottom line: Verizon is currently making money for the program while keeping the largest number of students, alumni, and fans happy. While I'd still like an on campus arena for two reasons (1) Verizon can screw us whenever our current lease expires; and 2) use for some basketball games and other on-campus events), at this point in time Verizon seems like the best option for cash-strapped Georgetown University and its men's basketball team.

Student ticket packages cost $100 this year, although that includes the shirt and (in theory) Metro fare cards.

And non-student season tickets were something like $25 per game (face value is $30, but season ticket holders get them slightly cheaper)

That is merely an illustration of how dark those times were...oh and we managed to come back from about 12 points down with under 3 minutes to play. It was also a drunk wednesday game and we were just excited to see a win. PS I managed to briefly hug Reuben's leg before being forcibly removed by security.

Is it possible now we are a national power again that we can swing a better deal with Verizon and/or threaten to build our own on campus arena if they don't? I mean, Verizon center has to book events, and we are a source of steady events for them now that is not easily replaced. Or are deals like this standard in the arena industry and non-negotiable? I guess what I am wondering is...is it feasible that we can swing a cut of the concessions too, or is that beyond the pale as far as these arena deals go?
