11 Days until Round I of the greatest rivalry in the Big East, not that I'm counting.
I'm going to attempt a little something special on the Hoop Club Blog for the occasion with your help.
Very simple concept: in this thread, you get to nominate your all-time favorite Georgetown vs. Syracuse games. That's the only criterion--your favorite ones. Nominate/discuss as many as you feel.
I'll give this until Monday/Tuesday or so, then make a separate thread with a big list of the favorites from the nomination process. At that point everyone can vote for their top 5 from the list, and I'll post the results (probably Top 10) in the Hoop Club Blog entry prior to the Hoyas-Cuse game on Monday Jan. 21st. There will likely be opportunities for reader input into the list.
So........get to it........and BEAT CUSE (in a week and a half)!!!!!!!!!!!

2001, after not making it to the tournament in four years and needing a signature victory. We beat Syracuse in front of a packed house at Verizon. In one of his better moments, Esh put on shades during the post-game celebration.

JT3's first win against Cuse on senior day, 2006 and the first one the class of 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 saw. Otto hanging in Red Square "I'm gonna hit the **** outta Boeheim" The huge banners thanking the seniors before the game. Jesse dunking on a break away. Jeff dominating after Ashanti got upended by McNamara. (Prematurely) chanting "N-I-T" at all the 'Cuse fans “The Duke win was nice. This was nicer. This is Georgetown-Syracuse."

1. 2-13-80: Hoyas 52-50 over 2nd ranked SU at Manley Field House.
2. 3-5-79: Hoyas 66-58 over 6th ranked SU in the ECAC final at Cole Field House to win a NCAA berth.

So many great battles. I'll take Smitty's scoop at the buzzer in 88' or the Big East Final in 1984. Go Hoyas!!!!!

From what's left to choose from... I'd have to go with the 2001 (i believe that was the year) BET matchup. Georgetown was the #8 seed and was facing #1 Syracuse. A 1 had never beat and 8 and Braswell and Scruggs teamed up to stun the Gargen crowd. The #1 seeded orangemen were sent home on a thursday.

Another was the BET Final in '89. We dismantled them (the final score did not do it justice). Worst Syracuse loss would have to be the Sam Jefferson half court foul in the Carrier Dome.

I have to be quite honest, any win is a good win over cuse. The fact that it's a rivalry game is enough. It's hard to say when it's sweetest to see a rival lose. Anytime we beat them is good enough for me.
I like people in orange frowning.
Heck, last year when ND took them out in the BET quarters and seeing all the cuse fans at the end of the first Thursday session with (hoya) blue faces was enough. Oh man was it great. We didn't even beat them and the charm factor was off the charts! There were two dozen cuse fans sitting in disbelief for at least 25 minutes after the game in the Garden. Friggin' great.
But yeah, all the previously mentioned games are tremendous nominees. I can't think of anymore to add.
The 2001 one was great. Poor Shumpert and his broken eye *rolls eyes (which work...HA!)*

1) the manley game 2) the '84 big east final. i still laugh thinking of jimmy hitting a chair and crying that the best team didn't win after the game. freaking loser. 3) smitty coast to coast in '88, because i was there 4) perry mcdonald with the game winner at the buzzer (dominating seikaly all day) in '87 5) jan 21 2008. we have lost 2 in a row to this crap team. REVENGE!
honorable mention to the '89 BET title game. zo dominating coleman. i still watch this game on a regular basis.

1. 2/24/01 -- At long last, we were NCAA bound. 2. 2/24/02 -- Great HB overnight road trip and a ruined Boeheim court celebration.

That was 2000- I watched that game from a tiki bar in Negril while on spring break my senior year. Lost to UCon in the next round, but that game and the 3OT NIT win at UVA were the two highlights of an otherwise desultory season.

FLHoyaWhy are you asking us all here? Can't have this question/ poll on the Hoya Hoop Club Blog itself? Regardless, I'm with the crowd who likes the 2000 Big East Tournament game.

Win at the 'Dome in '88 on Smitty's coast to coast layin. Like HoyaFanNY, I was also there with a big group of students (organized by Hoyamotion, a precursor to Hoya Blue), and it was awesome. Think I still have a picture of the scoreboard after the game.

I second TBird...I was NOT about to graduate without a victory over Cuse. It was totally worth getting screamed at by Martha Swanson.

Favorite Georgetown-Cuse game: Every one where we kicked their asses back to their smelly, broken down excuse for a city.
Least favorite: Any in which they managed to eke out an undeserved victory, almost certainly by cheating in some way.
Smitty coast-to-coast in the Dome and Alonzo reverse dunking all over them in the Garden are definitely up there though.
I'd also add an unheralded one to the list: A.I.'s freshman year, at Syracuse.
They had nicked a squeaker in Landover and tried to steal the second one in the Dome by fouling Boubacar Aw down the stretch. But Boobs came up clutch in the FT dep't. and we celebrated all the way back to DC. I remember listening to sports radio on the drive back and loving how disconsolate all the Syracuse fans were, complaining that they "couldn't compete with Georgetown's athletes." I think that night at The Tombs ended somewhere around 5 a.m.

2000 BET upset game is my fave. Lost my voice for like a week after that one. 'Nova lost that round, too, which made it all the better.

1. 1988 - Orangeboys hit a weak rim-roller with about 6 seconds left to go up by one, Dome crowd explodes with ecstasy at the victory - only to watch in horror as little Smitty takes ball the length of the court, then in to the paint for the scoop over the overrated 7-foot coverboy Rony Seikaly to roll the ball in at the buzzer. Never heard 30,000 plus all appear to have their vocal cords ripped out of their throats at the same moment, before or since.
2. 1980 - Grew up 40 minutes from Syracuse, was a misguided SU fan for first 22 years of my life; after starting at GU Law, had to listen to endless guff from lifelong friends about the relative levels of the SU and GU programs. This finally sent me over from the dark side to the light, making me an ardent Hoya fan starting in the 79-80 season. The utter joy of the last few moments, and JT II's indelible words, topped only by the many gloating phone calls to upstate NY for the rest of the night.

1. "Manley Fieldhouse is officially closed!"
2. 1989 BET Final - The Cuse crowd was standing at tipoff, waiting for their team to score until they sat down. And waiting. And waiting. And...waiting. Hoyas scored the first however many points of the game (it may not have been a lot, but it felt like it) and the game was never close. This was the final peak of the JTJr Hoyas "Beast of the East" years. The next week brought Princeton, and eventually Laettner and the Dookies took us down. But for one more glorious afternoon in MSG, we kicked some Orangeman ass one more time, just for good measure.
3. Smitty's finger roll at the buzzer at the Dome in '88. I still remember exploding off the couch for that one.
A truly great rivalry. Can't wait for this year's game!

1. The Manley Fieldhouse wrecker.
2. The six times Georgetown beat Dwayne Pearl Washington.
