A ref is accused of betting on games in which he worked: sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2943095Why is this David Stern's worst nightmare? Because these allegations give some credence to the vast number of NBA conspiracy theorists out there. If this ref made calls in an attempt to cover the spread, for instance, whats to say he didn't make calls simply to alter the outcome of a game? Will we ever know if this guy was in trouble with the wrong people and forced into "throwing" a game? How many games? For how long? This could prove to be a monstrous black-eye on The Association.

Not only that Buff, but if it's a Ref who works in the Postseason, the crap will really hit the fan. I know I've got a few names I think of automatically when hearing this: 1. Bennett Salvatore 2. Bob Delaney--who has a contract on his life out there as he was an undercover cop and informed on them. 3. Ken Mauer--related to Twins Catcher Joe and a notoriously brutal official.

This is an unmitigated disaster. Even worse, in my view, than the players running into the stands. You can overcome a thug image more easily than you can overcome threats to the integrity of the game.
You guys can dump on Nova, if you like, but I'm personally surprised this guy didn't attend BC.

This only increases my desire for the NCAA to look at the clowns who reffed GU/UNC in the regional final.

What is fascinating is how many referees are from NJ and Philly in the NBA. To be honest, I've been shocked how many ties to the NBA/CBB broadcasting can be traced to Jersey as well-- and if you have some Oliver Stone in you--one thing you could say is if everyone is in on the fix--you need all bases covered--including the announcers covering up the calls.
Do I believe everyone is crooked? No--but do I believe Donaghy was the only person involved? NO.

Just doesn't make sense... sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/jack_mccallum/07/20/ref.scandal/index.htmlThe SI article sure makes Donaghy seem like one hellva stand-up guy

Kige still needs to figure out what to do with his hands, I guess.

Sports business guru Kige Ramsey weighs in: EDIT: What happened to the good ol' days when Kige shot his segments in a Wal-Mart?!? That's some hard-hitting analysis from my boy Kige. Seriously, though...the NBA needs to adjust its rules in a big way. You can't have accountability when there's a foul called every 45 seconds of play. Who's going to sit down and re-watch every game in slow motion, especially when everything that might qualify as "defense" is called a foul? In baseball, you have questionable balls and strikes, maybe a bad out/safe call every now and again. But it's obvious every time. Basketball, there are just SO MANY calls that no one can possibly keep tabs on all of it. That, and it slows the game to a frustrating crawl.

Sounds like a real winner:
In January 2005 his next-door neighbors in suburban Philadelphia sued him for harassment and invasion of privacy for a pattern of discord that had reportedly gone on for several years. Peter and Lisa Mansueto claimed that Donaghy vandalized their property and stalked them, even to the point of following Mrs. Mansueto around Radley Run Country Club, where Donaghy and the Mansuetos were members. After an internal investigation, Donaghy was suspended from Radley Run for the summer and early fall of 2004. The suit also alleged that Donaghy set fire to the Mansuetos' tractor and crashed their golf cart into a ravine.
That's one way to put it. The league source with ties to the Philadelphia area put it this way: "He's the kind of guy who is always in fights. When he was a kid you'd see him throwing rocks at cars. He's just an a--hole. No one likes the guy. He's always in fights on the golf course, that kind of thing. He's a very antagonistic guy. When you have too many enemies, one of them comes back to bite you."

A collective moan rises from the city of Phoenix: I also wonder how many of those calls in the video were made by Tim and whether there's any sort of argument being made that other officials are involved.

Sounds like the right punishment for this Donaghy guy might be just letting nature take it's course and having his "associates" handle this. What a ----head this guy appears to be--and nice to see someone who is such an upstanding individual is in charge of officiating and deciding if players are violating the rules of the game.
