Here's a question for you all, does anyone care to list their most devastating lost weekends in their sports viewing lives? This one was bad, though I'm not sure it would qualify as a hall of famer. The Hoyas blew a golden opportunity and went about really making me wonder whether they really have it in them to make the NCAAs.
And then there was the New York Giants.
I can't say that rooting for the Giants is like rooting for the Cubs or Red Sox or something, but it can be pretty gut wrenching. Today was a game they REALLY ought to have won. They vastly outplayed Seattle on both sides of the ball, the Seahawks only being saved by ELEVEN false start penalties on the Giant offense. (Note 1: OL Luke Pettigout, the Christian in me wants to see you raise a family and have a long, prosperous marriage until you die at the age of 103, in your sleep, with your family by your side. The Psychotic Giant Fan in me wants to see you hanged by your achilles tendons) (Note 2: How do you get 11 false start penalties? I'm trying to envision screwing this up. "Okay boys, the ball is going to snap when I say 'Potato', got it?" "You bet, boss." "Good, because if anyone has any different words they are going to jump at, let me know now. Let's ALL get on the same page. The word is POTATO. Until such time as you hear this word, POTATO, you don't move. See, if you do it will cost us five yards and poor Frank Black will pull at his face and hiss at the TV screen. So, again, POTATO." "No problem! This is easy!" <LINEMAN JUMPS WHEN QB YELLS 'BEANO', Frank Black yanks face apart>) And a kicker that can't kick. Now as I said I don't get false start penalties. But I REALLY don't get hiring a kicker that doesn't kick. ("Hello, nice to meet you, I'm the GM of the N.Y. Giants and I'm looking for a kicker. What do you do? "I install air conditioners." "YOU'RE HIRED" feh) This was just a horrible stomach punch game. Usually you don't get more than one of these in a weekend, but this one? Yeah. Oh, and the Bruins are flat out bad. Bad like diarhea, not bad like Ice Cube. Anyway, any good examples of lost weekends for you guys?

I'm a Bengals fan, so this wasn't a total loss for me- but all things told, this was one of the worst sports weekends in my memory. 6 thousand church mice at MCI. A horrible, disspiriting loss. I'd take all my sports teams- Bengals, Suns, Devils, Nats- losing in painful fashion if the Hoyas win.

This Pats fan had a pretty lousy weekend, but Pats fans really aren't allowed to complain and Hoya fans really can't get too down about the first loss of the season to a pretty decent team, even if it was disappointing.
That is quite a collection of teams you have there, YB.

My Dad is from Cinci; I was raised in NJ; I am a Charles Barkley fan and actually campaigned to get the Expos to move to the DC area.
But above all, I'm a Hoya fan and would accept 20 years of last place finishes by all my other teams for one title by the Hoyas.

Frank, I'm a lifelong Giants fan myself. And I couldn't have put it any better. Except for two things: 1) Feely's a good kicker and he's been just about automatic up until today, so you can't hang the loss entirely on him. 2) You can hang the loss on the zebras who decided Shockey can run with the ball for 4-5 steps and apparently not have possession of it. If Feely gets that try from 35, we'd have left Seattle with a win.
But the Hoyas loss was a punch in the stomach. Aside from the MEAC teams, I think the record of the Hoyas in games which I've attended at MCI over the past 4+ years is under .500 for sure. It's brutal and I don't know why I return time after time for such punishment, but I do. AND, to top it all off, I lost my voice (again), because I had to make up for all of the kids in the student section sitting from the 4th row and back who decided to be mutes for an afternoon.
Big ups to 007 for the tix. You're the man and Georgetown basketball is lucky to have you.

Dude, give it up. Shockey never had possession. The Giants losing is karma for having anything to do with Eli Manning.

You're the one who needs to give it up if you're going to hate on Eli. I hope you're not a disgruntled Chargers fan who's angry about Philip Rivers laughing all the way to the bank when he's not warming the pine.
Even worse... I hope you're not an Eagles fan. These are the people who REALLY need to stop talking.

Dude, give it up. Shockey never had possession. The Giants losing is karma for having anything to do with Eli Manning. That would explain the Vikings beating them despite only gaining 137 total yards onoffense by returning a punt, a kickoff and an interception for touchdowns. Also would explain Eli throwing approximately 1 billion interceptions that game. The evidence is starting to pile up...how long until Dan Shaugnessy writes a book?

YB ur a benglas fan. lol good 2 have some1 else here along with me being a bengals fan and a hoya fan. lol and u like the suns, damn we got love for 3 teams in common the suns, hoyas, and bengals. ya everything worked out with them this weekend but ya its hard driving to a game for 5 hours and losing and coming back and only thinking about the lingering loss- all i could think about was reading in the post game report that the loser is gonna look back during selection time and say we wish we could have that win back- thats what really killed me. but ive gone to 7 gtown games in my life- only 1 win and that 1 win was in pitt last year. so i figured y not go 2 a supposed blowout game so im once again driving from pa-d.c. for the next home game- FAIRFIELD- hoping to bring back my first win in D.C.

I think the Bengals will make the playoffs this year, ending a looooooooooong drought.

lol i agree totally YB its jus great to find sum1 like you being interested in the same things. its sux being up in pgh being a bengal fan for the past 10 years even tho im only 16 idk i jus starting loving them when we got dillon. But the last 5 years ive been harassed and been asked you the hell do you like that crappy team while u could have the steelers. Well this year i promised a playoff birth 2 all of my friends and they just lafed right in my face. So I bet them 30 bucks each and i think we are 1 week away from that playoff birth being true. Hopefully pgh losses 2nite and we get that birth. Just great to be a bengals fan this year, and great to be a hoyasas well.

Jebus, Frank. Stop being such a whiner. You want lost weekends? Try rooting for the teams I like. Every weekend is a lost weekend.
Without even getting into the Vandy game (at which I offended more than a few nearby ticketholders with my second half expletives), here's just a sample of some of the recent fare I've had to swallow:
NFL - Ravens: worst offense in the league and swept by the lowly Bengals (yeah, I don't care how good their record is - the Bengals will always be "lowly", now and forever, amen). But the Murdering Linebackers'll have just enough wins at the end of the season to miss out on the best players in the draft.
MLB - Orioles: OK, so I don't really watch baseball or even follow it that closely, but they're still my favorite childhood team and I always want them to do well. Does the name Rafael Palmeiro ring a bell? Sammy Sosa? Laughingstock? Or how about B.J. Ryan? Pitching coaches don't mean a lot if you don't have pitchers.
NHL - Bruins: Thanksgiving sweep by the Flyers and Sens. A team with as much talent as anyone in the league rapidly heading toward missing the playoffs. Good thing they spent all that money. NBA - Sixers: Overtime loss at the buzzer to the friggin' KNICKS? Are you kidding me? My nephews could beat the Knicks!
NCAA football - Michigan: Blowing a late lead against those mangy Buckeyes for a 4-loss season and a meaningless bowl. (on the upside, doseofreality is probably happy because Lloyd Carr is now squarely on the hot seat and the temperature is rising rapidly).
At this rate, you should all hope I root for the Russians or Chinese in the next Olympics, or it will be an all-time low medal count for the U.S. of A.

These are the people who REALLY need to stop talking. I am a Chargers fan, but hardly disgruntled. Eli's little stunt got us Rivers (whoI don't like, but hopefully we can turn him for someone good), Roman Oben (starting LT), Shawne Merriman and Nate Kaeding. Add in the fact that Brees, while he doesn't have Eli's arm, is certainly farther along a better quarterback, and I'm not the least bit bitter about Eli. What annoys me about Eli (and Peyton) is the media's attempts to make them more than they are, and the their penchant for whining and blaming others.

1982 final four 1985 final four
Does anything come close? 1980 NCAA regional final.
That's about it.

I agree you probably got a pretty decent deal out of the Eli trade with Merriman (a guy who I think is going to be good for a long time ), Oben (not particularly a fan of, but serviceable), and Kaeding (an above average kicker), but to suggest that Brees is ahead of Eli is absurd. Brees is a good quarterback, but he's not going to make the difference come postseason time. Eli has that ability.
And while you're dead-on in saying that Peyton and Archie are big time whiners and the media feeds off that, I don't believe Eli has whined or blamed anybody for anything. The guy barely talks, much less shoots his mouth off. I wouldn't go so far as to lump him with his brother and father, both of whom I can't really stand.

The 2003 ALCS, Game 7.
If any of you think there's a worse loss out there, well, try to argue it.
I drank myself into a stupor and dumped my girlfriend all because of that game.

Eli pouts, but you're right, I haven't seen him blame someone else for his mistakes. Brees has his weaknesses (namely, the deep ball), but he is a very accurate passer who doesn't tend to make a lot of mistakes. Drew Brees had a QB rating of 104.8 last year, and a rating of 91.8 this year, despite having arguably the toughest schedule in the NFL. That's good for fifth in the NFL. The last thing the Chargers needed last year and this was a rookie QB holding them back. Eli's been okay. He may get better. He has a fantastic team around him this year and a schedule that gave them 9 home games. But he has yet o outperform Drew, no matter the arm strength.
