RDF - who do you want them to trade? And who should they pick up? The Yanks had their worst start in decades and are in position to take over the AL East within the week. Should they start rebuilding now?! I agree C and CF are their weakest spots, and Posada is overrated, but Bernie is gone after this year, as is Stottlemeyer... I wouldn't jump the gun and say this is the late 80's all over again. After all, like you said, they are giving the young guys a look. There was a great article recently about how many teams are following the Twins and Oakland's lead of building from the inside out, and I think with the call-ups of Cano and Wang and their resistance to trading their current minor league crop (read: Duncan) away, they're no exception. Plus, in the meantime they have the ability to grab a good CF in the offseason, a decent pitcher... the Empire isn't going away any time soon.

this posada bashing is ridiculous...he's a switch hitting catcher with power that gets on base at a 400 clip...varitek is his only peer in that sense. he became the starting catcher in 1998, not 2000, as RDF stated, and has adapted to about 40 different pitchers that the Yankees have brought in over the years. if you want to blame anyone for the shortcomings of the pitching staff, talk to mel stottlemyre, who has had 3 or 4 guys with great stuff pass through his hands, and their shortcomings are always attributed to their inability to pitch in new york. pitching was not the yankees problem when posada was catching in 2001 [14 runs in 7 games vs d-backs, still almost won that series] or 2003 [could not hit worth a lick]. 2002 they ran into an angels team that was en fuego, and 2004 they were up 3-0 on the sox and got good starts in games 4, 5, and 6. games 3 and 7 were the only disasters that series.
their weakest spots going into the season were CF and 2B, and depth of rotation. 2 of the 3 have blown up totally in our face, and the womack era was dealt with late in the game. still, they're 1.5 out and they haven't had 3 of their top 5 starters in a month. they have been inconsistent all year, yet are a half game out of the wild card. should there be any holes in a 200 million dollar payroll? no. but given the holes they have, this is a pretty good team that is finding ways to win as of late. that bodes well for this season, and we shed 40 million in payroll after this season...which should be enough money to land a power arm for the pen and a starter in center.
the yankees will certainly miss the playoffs one of these years...all streaks must come to an end. but these aren't the 80s. pitching will always be the core of these ballclubs, and that's where we'll spend the big money.

Al Leiter! I had a good feeling about Leiter, as he'd been successful with the Mets. But a performance like that against the Red Sox lineup was more than anyone could ask. I know it's just one game, but it looks like the Yanks may have three starters now. Brown's supposed to come back Monday, but I'm not really sure if that's a good thing...

I tip my cap to Al. Great game. Really a gem.
Also, I'd like to say other than Wake's hiccup in the second and third...he matched him stride for stride and put on a great one himself. Two bad Sheff looked like Bobby Abreiu out there...jesus he hit that homerun hard.

cambridge
thought i'd bump this one up. i have tickets to the final game of the season at fenway, and i have no idea how this one ends. i hope we're up 3 going into that weekend so i don't have to sit through another Sox/Yanks elimination game, gulping down antacids with every pitch.
logic tells me the Yanks should win this. their pitchers are flat out better at this point, in the starting rotation and in the bullpen. i know Sheff is banged up, but i think offense won't be a problem...Giambi's resurgence has made up for it. on paper, it looks like we should win it by 2 or 3 games.
but....what if Curt Schilling regains his form, the one he showed last Saturday vs the Yanks? What if Tim Wakefield puts himself into Cy Young contention with his ridiculous string of great starts? What if David Wells rediscovers his curve after a cortisone shot to the knee? What if Craig Hansen is as nasty as he was last night? A lot of IFs, i know...but what if Mariano Rivera walks the leadoff batter in the bottom of the 9th and Dave Roberts comes off the bench to pinch run? With these two teams, I never know. So I have a pretty good feeling that they'll be playing for something that Sunday.
Pass me the Rolaids.

I've got tickets for the Saturday game, which is looking like Schilling v Johnson. I'm already excited about it. I have no idea who will come out on top, but I don't think there is anyway it doesn't come down to that weekend. I hope we are a game up going into Saturday so that I can be there for the possible Yankee elimination party without the possibility of the Red Sox being eliminated.

belly of the beast indeed. also have tix for the one game playoff at Yankee should it come to that. God help me if it comes to that. win or lose, after the last 2 ALCS's, i have been dead. and people have said last year's Sox comeback has taken away from things...i was at Yankee for the RJ/Wakefield game, and it was electric. both fanbases are still very into it. Sox fans just have a swagger now. they've earned it. lame Yankee fans have resorted to a "got rings?" t shirt. i boo these people. all you really need is a shirt with a photo of jimmy fallon and drew barrymore making out. this will be my first foray into Fenway. I have seats in the grandstand on the 3rd base line, section 29. i'm todd there isn't a bad seat in the house, but i got stuck behind a support beam at the old boston garden once, another place where bad seats didnt exist. any advice as far as what to do before/after game? landsdowne street looks pretty cool. Good lord. Talk about exciting. Here's to you Borat heading into the belly of the beast. Ever been to Fenway? Where are your seats?

Borat, I'd be happy to give you some advise, but am heading home right now. Whoever told you there isn't a bad seat in the house is flat out wrong. There are TONS of bad seats (seats directly behind poles, seats that face the bullpens, even a seat that is near impossible to get in and out of because just above your knees is the right field foul pole. Even the "good" seats are cramped if you are taller than 5'5". All that being said, I would take a any seat in Fenway over any anywhere else. If that last game is meaningful (and probably even if it isn't), you'll see why. I'll write more about suggestions pre/post game when I get a chance. I go to about 20 games a year. Check out this link for some bad seats: www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2005/06/17/the_worst_seats_at_fenway/

Borat I've sat many times right near your seats...they are spectacular. Trust me, you will feel like you are on the field. Fenway is soooooo much smaller than Yankee stadium.
Places in the vicinity worth checking out:
We used to always go to Crossroads on the corner of Beacon and Mass. Cheap, dark, dank but cheery and usually offering free food before/after games.
There's also a bar across the street from An Tua Nua that's really good. Can't remember the name for the life of me.
Have fun man.

Cambridge, I think you are talking about PJ Kilroys, the dumpiest bar in Boston - and one of my favorites. Borat, it all depends on what you are looking for. If you really want to experience the Fenway atmosphere, I would suggest the Cask n Flagon, right accross the St. at the corner of Brookline Ave and Landsdown St. Both of Cambridge's suggestions are good as long as you don't mind sticky floors.

Great game from Wake today. Pure classic. He had his stuff and the jays looked beat from the get go. Hope we get a similar performance from CS tonight. i am going to be in a perpetual state of nausea until after Sunday's game... hopefully Cleveland tanks this week and we both end up there. until then, i will be agonizing over each pitch Cambridge, I think you are talking about PJ Kilroys, the dumpiest bar in Boston - and one of my favorites. i was just asking my friend here at work, big Sox fan: at what point does he get Cy Young votes? he won't win, but this guy has been the only constant for that staff all year. and he is pitching as well now as he was in the 2003 playoffs. Pen looked ok - papelbon worked out of a jam, Timlin got hit hard, couple of at-em balls, but that's about par for the course Great game from Wake today. Pure classic. Sad thing is outside of New England, all he's remembered for is the big homers he's given up. The truth is, he's one of the most clutch athletes I've ever seen. Not that I feel 100% when he's on the mound, but more times than not he delivers when it counts. That plus the fact he's willing to pitch on no days rest as a starter, reliever, closer, whatever. Ridiculous. I still can't believe he got left off the playoff roster a couple years back. The guy is always willing to take the ball and put his body on the line. All that from a converted third baseman! Crazy. Absolutely crazy. My dream is that he plays a while longer and ends up passing Pedro in strikeouts as a Sox. His is the only jersey I own of the Sox...besides an El Guapo tshirt. Best part, I got that Wake jersey back in high school. i was just asking my friend here at work, big Sox fan: at what point does he get Cy Young votes? he won't win, but this guy has been the only constant for that staff all year. and he is pitching as well now as he was in the 2003 playoffs. He's one of the most underrated players in baseball. not just pitchers, but at any position. and his loyalty to one team is not common in this day and age - i believe he signed a 5 million dollar extension for next season with options in perpetuity recently - he could have gotten 7 million + for two or three years coming off the season he is having. i remember that he gave up the boone HR, sure, but i also know he is ALCS 2003 MVP if the Sox win that series. there are plenty of guys on the Sox i don't like - Manny and Schilling top the list - but him and Johnny Damon have always been alright in my book. By the way, i miss pedro martinez. he brought a lot to the rivalry. there's no public enemy #1 anymore. Sad thing is outside of New England, all he's remembered for is the big homers he's given up. WOW!!. Can we swap David Ortiz for Tim Wakefield in this love-fest. He is the MVP. I don't know if he'll win it, but I've never seen anything like this. Everytime he comes up late in the game in a clutch situation, I expect him to deliver. Unbelievable victory tonight. I was so down through the first few innings - it is quite a testiment to this team to come back and get the win. The Sox made the playoffs - which start tomorrow.
