Michael Kay reported it on his show today, citing Ruben Sierra as his source. Cashman appeared on mike and the mad dog today, he said that Wang hurt his shoulder during a side session, is going to Alabama to see Dr. Andrews...Dr. Andrews = rotator cuff surgery if history is any guide. When asked point blank if it was more serious than the 15 day DL, Cashman refused to comment. between Kay and reading between Cashman's lines, it isn't good. Mad Dog and Russo were as arrogant as ever today, hounding Cashman and not letting him get a word in over their yelling. Cashman finally said "maybe one day when you run the team you'll make the right moves"...which shut them up, temporarily. Borat, where you getting he's out for the year?

Baseball Prospectus' Playoff Odds Report. I can explain if anyone cares - but adjusts to run scoring, level of competition, home/away, etc....
Red Sox - 58% Chance of winning division, 8% WC Yankees - 18% chance of winning division, 8% WC Orioles - 18% chance of winning division, 9% WC
The chances are based entirely on performance to date and ongoing schedule -- i.e. future injuries, players coming back from injury, players under or overperforming in the first half and possible acquisitions are NOT included.

Other items of note:
Nats - 31% Division, 23% WC (Braves favored 50% Division winners) White Sox - 70% Division, 14% WC Indians - 20%/25% Twins - 9%/13%
Padres - 88%/0% (Obviously not factoring in chances of Dodgers getting healthy)

Wow... Schilling looks awful. ZERO velocity, ZERO movement... horrendous. He's at least a couple weeks away. That A-Rod homer was a BOMB. And that Matsui strikeout was a good foot off the plate... got lucky there.

Happy about the win, but Mussina cannot have too many starts like tonight's if the Yankees are to have any chance to succeed. Mariano looked sharp though. He's really having a hell of a season.

Well, that sucked. The Sox bullpen is in T-rubble. That having been said, I still think both the Sox and Yanks make the playoffs - there is just too much talent (including in the front office) for this mediocrity to continue.

I was very disappointed with last night, although I thought it was a very exciting if sloppy game...but I woke up in a foul mood. ARod homers go down about as smooth as that 5th pitcher last night. Anyways, went to get the paper, felt how hot it was and felt even worse. Beer burps and tummy rumbles. ugh.
However, the sky cleared and the birds started chirping when I turned to the sports section. Let's just say I'm very eager for this game to start.
Here's to tonight's game in which David Wells battles the immortal Tim "Otis" Redding.

You mean David Wells didn't pitc last night? Then who was that tubby bastard with bad facial hair who let up the homer to A-Rod? Wait, he was a righty, it must have been Curt. In the immortal words of Jim Schoenfield...have another donut, you fat pig. Someone give Curt the memo about stealing other closer's entrance songs...jungle belongs to gagne...one song per chubby closer with an 8th grader's goatee. - exit light. enter night. Ba-zing! Man, it's just not summer without Borat dancing around the clubhouse. Re: observations made during the game. Anyone else think that Giambino has replaced the Jose Canseco training program with the Oil Can Boyd/Daryl Strawberry Columbian white variety. His first two at bats...well, let's just say I've seen those same mannerisms in many bars around Manhattan -- and he certainly introduced us to his little friend. sorry, couldn't resist, i work with a bunch of Sox fans and they have been droning on and on about how Schilling was going to rescue them. it seems his injury prevented him from doing aerobic exercices...but he did not watch what he ate. seriously, he's huge. they are rushing him back, and while i am sure he will pitch better in subsequent appearances, conditioning is going to be a big problem for him going forward. the good thing is, if your giambi observation is true, that you can be suspended for cocaine 10 times and still be reinstated/not be villified in new york. just ask steve howe. in all seriousness, he is still locked in, and posada hit the ball hard a couple of times last night, so we seem to be clicking right now offensively. the lineup needs to keep this up as we have a 2 man rotation. even last night, we needed 8 runs to get it done. Way to introduce a little hockey into a baseball thread, Borat! Beware... 'bridge may pull out all the stops to destroy you now!
Schonny is a legend up in Buffalo. Like a lot of NHL'ers, I think he still lives in Amherst or Eden or one of those ritzy Buffalo 'burbs for tax purposes, proximity to Canadia, etc.

That was better. Will Cabrera position himself inside the garage doors tomorrow? I've never seen anyone play so deep. And man, does that Redding guy suck. Pitchers | IP | H | R | ER | BB | SO | HR | PC-ST | ERA | T Redding (L, 0-1) | 1.0 | 4 | 6 | 6 | 4 | 2 | 0 | 41-16 | 54.00 | D May | 2.2 | 6 | 6 | 6 | 3 | 0 | 1 | 69-40 | 16.71 |

Someone give Curt the memo about stealing other closer's entrance songs...jungle belongs to gagne...one song per chubby closer with an 8th grader's goatee. FYI, Millar apparently picks the music so take it up with him. That's the best the Spanks can do in center field? Yikes. Tubby didn't look so bad last night - he made that professional hitting lineup look sick in what one of the Globe sportswriters called a 'rocking chair' start. Never fear, 'Brownie' is about to come off the DL. And don't worry, now Al Leiter is available - he should fit right in to that rotation. As for Schilling the other night, this sums it up pretty well: "You know he's not real proud of his cheese when you throw that many split fingers." -- Dennis Eckersley on Schilling's relief appearance

Pitching is all about the legs and mid section--Schilling can't be expected to throw like he did prior to his injury due to the fact he's been unable to put the weight on his leg and you get the conditioning from running, which he can't do. Schilling is a great pitcher and while I hate Boston, it's comical how Yankee fans take him to task for WANTING to help his team when you damn well know that if one of the Yankees did this, they'd make him "Greatest of all time". Instead, NY has a guy so afraid of playing (Kevin Brown), a guy whose arm is always injured (Wright) and a guy who doesn't have the stomach for pitching (Pavano). This is the 1980's Yankees all over again from big spending on average and over the hill players, to inept starting pitching. The fact is that Red Sox have been the better team since '03 and Yankees found a way to beat them--with help from Grady Little in '03. To me it's also been a matter of Yankees coming back to the pack more than teams raising their game but that's part of sports, and nobody's fault by Yankee Organization. If you want to look at one player who I think is the example of Yankee MISMANAGEMENT and why they are not as good it's Jorge Posada. The guy is terribly overrated and always has been. He's a terrible defensive catcher and overrated offensive player. Jorge became the fulltime Catcher in '00 and that was by far the worst of the Yankee Championship Teams. They've not won a title since. The fact is that Boston is so much greater at this position is the difference in my opinion. They get a Matt Clement and Varitek's ability to handle pitchers and provide leadership is what makes him great--even though he's also a very solid offensive player. Yankees had that in Girardi--without Varitek's offensive ability--and since the day he's left, this organization has been going in wrong direction. You need great defense up the middle and specifically at Catcher and CF spots--where the Yankees are AWFUL. Up the middle they are decent enough at SS and 2B, but those two glaring weaknesses kill you over the course of a season. It's so obvious that when Flaherty catches you get a better game from any Yankee Pitcher, and makes me wonder why Yankee Management can't see that?? I'd trade to get Dionar Navarro back for his defense alone and in AL you can have a lighter hitting catcher, if he can play defense and move runners like Girardi. Afterall, I'd say the '96-99 Yankee Era wasn't too bad. I am encouraged by the fact Cano and Wang were given chances and while Cabrera's in over his head, at least he was given a look over getting a Griffey Jr or Kotsay. I'd like to see Yankees either deal some vets or hold onto them and take thier fate as a mediocre club this year, and wait for Cashman to be fired before making changes--he's terrible and to be fair, Steinbrenner's "backdoor" deals don't help him, but Cashman has to be smart enough to realize that Stottlemyre can't develop a young pitcher worth a damn, and the Jaret Wright signing was all him--(yeah, going from Leo Mazzone to Mel isn't much of a difference. Anyways, hope the Yanks can claw to stay around but I see them fading like dogs over the course of this stretch--Boston, Texas, Angels--who Torre has never done well against since he's managed Yanks.

You don't say. Still, it is hard to beat them in terms of encyclopedic knowledge of sports. It is particularly telling when they get call-ins about less followed sports in the area, like men's lacrosse, and they field the questions well. WFAN 660 has the best talk radio run down in the tri-state area, leading off with Imus in the morning. I don't know of anything that comes close to them down in DC. I've listened to Sportstalk 980. JT's show is good for the reason that we can hear about GU, but, if you are looking for a show that covers everything, I've been underwhelmed by what they offer in terms of an entertaining product. They have decent guests, but the atmosphere of a morgue. And it does not help that they discuss the Redskins and Wizards. Who cares about them?
