I knew the f-ball field was moved to the old baseball field, but I imagined that the Multisport complex would be built on top of Yates. Interesting that it will not be! What will they do with the room on top of Yates?

Jersey, Im sure this was only a very rough skecth anyway, but the sideline seats are too far from the court. In Cameron the sideline seating is right up to the edge of the court and thats the way it should be. In this pic only the seats behind the basket are close enough to the court. Also, when such plans are truly realistic they better remember to make a student section along the sidelines. Remember that it the section above it has to be elevated so that the sitting alums and other fans can see over the standing student section!!!

What will they do with the room on top of Yates? The football field is not on the old baseball field, the old baseball field is a parking lot and future site of new MSB/ Science buildings I believe. The football field is right next to the parking lot that was the old baseball field though. I doubt that Yates could support a stadium on top of it and I'm assuming that it will simply remain a practice/recreational field.

So, will the views from Leavey be obstructed? Or, should I say, are the views already obstructed by the new dorms?

What will they do with the room on top of Yates? The last time they played football on top of Yates was the 1998 season. The MSF has been planned for Harbin field since it was just a tiny little idea in the back of someone's mind. Harbin field is actually NOT on the old baseball field... a parking lot is. Yates is used as practice fields and the "home" field for a few of the women's teams and maybe men's soccer? 007 - my last post wasn't meant to be nasty. I just had my hopes up for something earth shattering... and all I got was that dumb MSF picture we've seen for the last half a year or so.

The view from Leavey of what? The Southwest Quad already obstructs any views past it, and Im sure that new MSB/ Science buildings will further obstruct the view.

Kehoe Field (on top of Yates) is a practice/recreational field that the field hockey team also plays its games on. Both soccer teams as well as women's lacrosse play on North Kehoe field which is kind of separate. email me at kwm23@georgetown.edu if you want the earth shattering pic.

SoCal - the views from Leavy were never much to begin with. Even before the dorms, that row of trees blocked any view of the Potomac. What they are planning on doing is for SURE building the business school on the "baseball field" as seen on the following link: www.thehoya.com/news/042004/news2.cfm#As you can see, they are making a great looking "patio" outside Sellinger Lounge that will run the length of Leavy and have a grand staircase that would take students all the way down to the current field/entrance of the new biz school building (you can see the MSF in the background). The goal is to connect all parts of campus in some way.

Wow... if this is a legit plan they are moving forward with, where do I send the check?
Unfortunately, there've been all kinds of plans like this since I've been involved with GU... so I'll wait until there's concrete plans before getting TOO excited.
A few thoughts:
1) I don't like how the corners of the new bball court are empty. A full enclosure would be real intimidating, but I understand those are probably moveable seats for graduation, speakers, etc. Beggars can't be choosers, I guess...
2) The new McD facade looks AWESOME. I'm guessing that's the oft mentioned "Phase 2" of the MSF that relocates all the AD offices. Beautiful.
3) With that new structure with the 3 "practice" courts next to McD, where will the tennis team go?
4) I like the new entrance idea to Yates. And the courts. And the weight area (which I'm assuming is in dark blue). But what is the green thing in the back? Tennis courts?
5) Best part (after the hoop court): GETTING A TRACK!!! They are arguably the best athletic program and need a home on campus.
6) What are they planning on doing with Yates? From THAT picture it looks like they are makign it one level? Maybe leveling the hill? Interesting.

Oh, when I was an undergrad I appreciated the views from the "Airport Lounge" over the Potomac. It wasn't much, you're right, but it was something neat to look over to central campus. Though I will miss having that view, I think the planned use of the space will much improve the dear Hilltop!

Thanks, Nodak. Am I looking at a possible plan of a basketball arena on the left, with the top removed? And is this generally where McDonough is now located? And, what's to the right of the arena?

Yes, this is exactly where McDonough is currently located, only this would be expanded from its current size. To the right of it where there appear to be practice facilities (awesome!!!) is the the current location of tennis courts and above that is the Heating and Cooling plant. Above all of this stuff is the observatory and Yates (under Kehoe Field).

I think my question got lost in trying to get at the pic, but where would people park in this design? It looks like they are going to use the current McDonough lot in the expansion, leaving even less space for the fans to park/ tailgate.

as far as parking, I guess they are going to depend on the SW Quad underground lots.
tailgating seems to be a completely different issue. There would be very little open space on that end of campus for a big event like homecoming tailgating.

This is not the master plan for athletics--it's an architect's idea. There is no master plan on the table right now.
There are a number of architect drawings that appear from time to time on the Web, and that's all there is. Georgetown (the executives, not athletics) is making no effort on McDonough right now, and there are 10+ years of various designs that are nice to view, but never took place.
Simialrly, there are plans that were proposed to GU and then never adopted. There's one from the 1920's that had a 30,000 seat football stadium in the bowl of the old baseball field and a replica of the Palestra where Village B stands. Didn't happen.
I've got one from a 1954 yearbook that proposed a new SFS building next to New South with what looks like a 6-10 story tall crucifix looking over the Potomac. Didn't happen.
One from the 1970's turned Healy and Copley Lawn into a large concrete plaza adorned with 50 state flags, like the front of Union Station. Didn't happen.
In the 1980's the so-called "Stern Plan" would have essenttially turned the entire campus into concrete podiums with thousands of underground parking spaces and exiled all athletic teams to a neighboring state, replacing the McDonough and Yates areas into faculty rowhouses. Didn't happen.
Unless you see a design on GUHoyas.com, don't buy into it.

Is there a closer up pick of the arena? Or is the best we have just the pic of the overall architectural concept of the whole of athletic facilities?

While DFW's right that this isn't a plan -- it should quiet some people who say that there is no room for something like this. There's room.
The administration has just decided to spend its money elsewhere.
On Yates, while I was there I heard rumors/talk that it was nearing the end of its life; that is wasn't built well and no one was expecting it to last much longer.

DFW, if you could make a scan of the 10 story tall crucifix picture, I would love you forever. That would be unbelievable. It reminds me of a letter I read in the NY Daily News about what to build at ground zero that suggested a 100 story tall red-white-and-blue statue of Christ. I would have voted for that!
More seriously, it seems the impetus for any movement on this issue is going to have to come from outside the administration. Given the other large projects on the ledger, and the very serious financial crunch, there's just no way that this is going to happen in the next decade. But in the future, people outside Healy with big wallets are going to have to move towards getting this done. Presumably someone paid for this artist's rendering - firms don't just make up relatively staid projects to stir up interest. Someone put up some cash. Is there any real money behind the push for a new arena right now?
