Our boys are up 28-20 at the half. Was reallly low scoring for the first few minutes. Haven't paid as close attention to the streaming radio as I would have liked (at work) but we seem to be knocking down shots, at least more often than LB State is. Foul trouble though, I think DJ has 3 already. Jeff seems to be on every rebound, per usual.

Seems like we are winning it at the free throw line, Long Beach's one, as they are 4-13. Perfect and they would be up by one.

Dear upperclassmen Bowman/Cook, Show up for some of these games. Thanks. Cook hasnt been that bad, averaging 10+ a game is enough for him, more assists would be good though. Bowman needs to show up Penn St. style. LEAD US!

As I said, we won at the FT line: Hoyas 18-21, LBS 7-17. A win is a win, I agree, but it did not look pretty from the stats I saw.

Bowman, Cook, Wallace and Hibbert ALL failed to score a basket in the second half though Bowman and Cook hit two free throws and Wallace, one. How can we expect to improve if upperclassmen Bowman and Cook disappear for a half?

I gotta say, I can't imagine a more unsatisfying win for us at this point.
We squeeked out a 6-point win against a 1-7 team that lost to by 29 to Charlotte and 13 to UCLA. We didn't win this game, LBSU lost it: they committed 23 turnovers (to our 17) and were a horrendous 7-17 from the line. Simply put, LBSU makes their free throws, they win this game. They also outrebounded us 26-23, which is downright embarassing. All from a team that was 6-21 last year and 5-22 the year before.
Since his 28-point outburst against Penn State, BB has been held to single-digits for four consecutive games. Today, 8 points on 2-8 shooting with 4 rebounds and FIVE turnovers. I was looking for him to be one of the focal points of our offense, if not a leader of this team, and he has put up consistent DUDS since that amazing effort vs. PSU.
Ashanti had a horrible game too, but the one bright spot was Jeff Green, with his 2nd collegiate double-double with 20 points (7-12 FG, 6-6 FT), 10 rebounds, 4 steals, and icing the game late with clutch free throws. He has been the one source of constancy in our offense, and is without a doubt our go to guy IMO. Also nice to see Reed contribute with 8 points. However, Green was our only player in double digits, and that just won't fly come Big East play.
Better shape up, Hoyas, or the cellar dwellers of the ACC, Clemson, could blow us out of the building tomorrow.
(edit: BTW, Clemson is currently killing Indiana State 60-33 with 13:25 left in the 2nd half, as per ESPN.com. I really, really hope we are not dead meat like this and actually show up tomorrow.)

What's with these CA guys (not you CAHoya ) They had a chance to shine against a CA team and really didn't show up. Maybe they will for a team from the other coast.

Soooooo...the telephone lines in my neighborhood decided to cut out for five hours this afternoon, so no radio broadcast for me. I'm not sure how to feel for you folks who were so lucky as to be able to listen in on the proceedings from Honolulu this afternoon.
I know one thing: games where the teams average a turnover a minute usually aren't fun ones. My quick look at the box score shows a lot of ugliness on both sides.
Hopefully our correspondants on the island of Oahu can give us some insight on how things went today. Because there's a lot of different kinds of ugly, and I'm just curious which brand of it we saw today.

Back from the game, and it was an odd one. Sat behind the Hoya bench about 4 rows up for a different perspective today, and was joined once again by SirSaxa. Ramell's dad was nearby, and is a really nice guy.
Neither team could find any offense for around the first 10 minutes of the first half. Our defensive quickness was noticeably better than vs. ORU, but there were still some problems on the boards in the first half. Roy started today, in place of DJ, but wasn't as effective as the previous game. He missed one or two close ones that just spun out, and it seemed like the other guys weren't really feeding him in the places he's most comfortable. Right in the first few minutes, though, he really showed me something by diving for a loose ball (nice swipe by Wallace knocked it free) and tying up the LBSU guy to give GU the ball. Our guys were really scrapping much better today, and we forced 3 or 4 tie ups just like this during the course of the game.
GU ended the half on a bit of a scoring run (something like a 13-5 run or something) to take an 8 point lead into halftime. The second half was again a bit out of whack on offense, although early we did have a few beautiful inside feeds for dunks or easy scores, and we went backdoor nicely at least twice. Green come on as a rebounding demon in the second half, and really skied for some impressively . LBSU couldn't hit the broadside of a barn from the charity stripe, but they seemed to get their offense going a little better as well, and it was pretty much seesaw. A bogus call on Wallace for a technical (he was fouled, and then the guy wouldn't let go of him, so he shrugged his arm to make the guy let go, and he was hit with a T for "elbowing" -- i guess only elbows during huddles are no-calls in this tournament) got the lead down to 5, but GU scored the next 5 and looked to be taking control.
At this point, it's hard to explain what happened. GU played some of its crispest, most intelligent offense of the tournament for the next few minutes, but the lead kept being whittled down anyway because this guy from Long Beach who hadn't scored a point up until the 2 tech FTs suddenly turned into World B Free and hit 3 ridiculous long balls while moving and guys guarding him. Another guy hit 2 more (I think they had 4 or 5 in a row), and the lead was down to 3 with less than a minute to go. At this point GU didn't wilt, and instead was very clutch from the FT line. During the latter part of the half, Green, Reed (who played a nice, in -control game), Roy and Wallace made some big makes for us from the line to hold LBSU at bay, and it was really iced after Wallace made his, and then GU rebounded his miss.
I also have to give kudos for one sequence in the second half when GU got FOUR offensive rebounds before finally getting the basket.
The reason I said it was an odd game is because our guys looked to be hustling, rebounding and scrapping much better, and yet it was still a tough game because the shots just weren't falling today. Again, the offense really does free up some wide open Js, and it's really frustrating to watch them not fall, after being set up so nicely. On the other hand, there were some really nifty assists, including one on the break when Ashanti drove the lane, stopped, wheeled around and whipped it back to Wallace (Reed? can't quite remember now) who found the bottom of the net with a 3. Brandon (who played ok but was hampered with foul trouble, 2 of which didn't seem to be close to fouls from my "unbiased" angle) also had a beauty of an interior pass to Jeff for a vicious slam. I know a lot of people will be down because LBSU has such a bad record and the game was so close. But it was weird watching the game, because it was obvious the guys were really working hard to correct the things that went wrong on Monday. I think this year we just have to take wins any way we get them, and appreciate the improvements made in the areas that need work. Today was a step forward for defense and rebounding (although tomorrow will be a MUCH tougher test in both of those departments), but the offense still only shows glimpses of what it can be when everybody's timing is in synch. Right now it's still running like a car with some water in the gas tank. And when that happens, the outside shots falling becomes so much more important.
Owens played a nice defensive game today, and the guards in general did a much better job of not letting LBSU's guards break them down. It might have been because Long Beach's guys weren't as good, but you could also see more communication and effort on switches than in the previous game.
JT3 constantly coaches during the game and when guys come out. During one timeout he praised the defensive work, but pleaded with the guys to run the offense more cleanly and to make sure they looked for every teammate. I can also see why he was considered a good end-game coach at Princeton. He was calm but very focused after LBSU pulled nearly even, and stressed the need for "no lazy passes" and the fact that rebounding had to be a team effort, and the message on both seemed to get through. Sead is also a lot of fun to watch on the bench -- nobody roots harder, claps for teammates more, and genuinely seems into the game more than that guy. I hope he earns some PT, because he really is the embodiment of a "team" guy.
Green was the best player on the court for either team today. As he grows stronger, more confident, and more battle-tested, he's going to be among the Big East's best. He's the guy to build this team around in the future
Nice showing by the Hoya fans in the sparse crowd for an early start. By far the noises fans of the four teams. When i left, Clemson was blowing out a really short Indiana State team. Clemson is going to be a VERY tough game for us, because they match to our weaknesses. They are big and strong, and have more muscle than Oral Roberts. We are going to need very smart basketball and much better outside shooting to win tomorrow. A win in our next game will show something important -- an ability to adjust to the types of team that have given us the most trouble -- big, physical ones.
Rich Chvotkin says hi to everybody.

During some timeouts I heard some nice "Hoya Saxa" and "We Are Georgetown" cheers. Were you a part in getting that started, SaxaCD? Haha, in any event, good job.
Also, did the cheerleaders make it out to Hawaii? I thought I heard them during parts of the 2nd half.

I have to agree with JT3. For people who only read about it, it sounds like a disaster game for us. But it wasn't. DFW hit the nail on the head with his pregame comments. The guys scrapped all game, even though the offense was really out of rhythm, and then found a way to win at the end. They showed real poise down the stretch, which I have to believe will be good experience for games down the road, too.

I'd like to say that was saxacd shouting "HOYA" and yours truly responding "SAXA"!! But actually, it was a small contingent of Hoya fans across the court from us -- where we sat on Monday. Alas, no cheerleaders made the trip. Today, as saxacd mentioned, we sat a few rows behind the Hoya bench -- with no one in between us and them. We could have sat directly behind the bench, but the guys are so tall they would have blocked our view. I also saw a mention in the W. Times that the attendance was over 6,000. Maybe by the end of the night for the important games, but sure as hell not at our 11:00 am start. Maybe 600. Maybe. once again, Saxacd's write-up was so thorough -- and accurate -- there isn't much for me to add. But since when has that ever stopped me before? He mentioned that Hibbert started today (in place of Owens). That might have been notable, we'll have to see in future games. It seemed like a shot in the arm for Hibbs. I like big Roy -- ROY ROY ROY... He plays hard. And for a guy who doesn't run all that well, or quickly, he has some pretty good moves around the basket. They didn't buy him a lot today, but he is going to develop over his four years. The thing I liked best, was the team came to play today. Monday, they were sluggish, flat and came up against a very good team. Long Beach is not a good team. But the biggest difference was us. We were after every ball, and we were playing a much more aggressive and confident offense. We still had trouble rebounding the ball early. for the game, we had 12 offensive rebounds and they had 14 defensive. However, 4 of our offensive boards came on one possession late in the game. 2 each by Bowman and Green, who finally converted a put back. As for defensive boards, we had 11 to their 12 offensive. So when they were shooting, we were not boxing out and controlling our own boards. By memory, it seemed like that was a much worse problem in the first half -- which motivated coach to tell our guys during a time out -- "will someone please get in front of number zero" (Zero was getting a lot of boards at that point!) But we improved on it in the second half. By the way, this game was not as close as the score. We had a 12-15 point lead (something like that) toward the end. They brought in this kid Hodges who was scoreless at that point -- (late in the game). When the refs called that technical on Wallace, Hodges swished both free throws. Over the next few minutes, he swished three treys -- deep treys. He went from no points in the first 30+ minutes, to 11 in no time. LBS hit a couple other deep treys too. They were taking the kind of desperation shots a team takes toward the end of the game when they are far behind, but they hit about 4-5 treys in a row and that brought them close. GU did not lose composure or confidence. Green made some key buckets, boards and about 4 "perfect form" free throws for us and that did save the day. He is clearly our MVP of the season. And our best recruit since Mike Sweetney. We would be in deep trouble without this Craig recruit -- his parting gift to his alma mater. And let me second what saxacd wrote about our offense in the second half. Our guys got far more comfortable and aggressive. They were playing a faster paced, more effective motion offense. The LBS coaches were constanly shouting "Back door!" and such trying to help their guys cope with the rapid pace of our passing and cutting. We really had them on the run -- even though they were hitting those threes. ON defense, we did not lose sight of their guys, they just got a bit lucky with the deep ball. On the disappointing side, neither Bowman nor Cook have looked all that effective here. Reed gave us some valuable minutes today. And Owens had some good contributions. Ross got in the game late in the first half... we aren't sure why. Reed and Owens came in before he did. One other thing.... I hate to cry about the refs, but there were a lot of obvious non-calls when our guys got hit -- even in the open. But touch fouls were being called the other way. I didn't feel that way yesterday, but I sure did today. There was one drive and shot by Green when he got hammered - twice. He was hit in the body AND on the arm, and he made the shot anyway. No foul called. None of this affected our attitude or our play. We just kept our heads, stayed focused and played ball. We looked like a different team today. That was not just because of a weaker opponent, and it was good to see. I am sure I prattled on too long and Saxacd really covered all the key stuff earlier. But since you guys are not able to see the game, I felt that a few additional impressions might be fun to have. Reading the comments on the board, it seems that most of us have reasonable expectations of our team. It is going to be a tough year. We don't have a roster full of Big East talent. And we have kids learning a new system. But if they play hard and focused (as they did today), we'll steal some wins in conference. And we'll be playing a lot better by season's end. Aloha
