JT III being present while a reporter is pitched a story about a situation between his brother and Ball State, one that JT III had nothing to do with - one that paints Ball State in a very negative light - raises the stakes for this Ball State game next year and starts to get JT III and Georgetown directly involved in this mess. I was kind of hoping he would stay out of it, as it sounds like a dysfunctional situation with alot gray areas at best. I agree it would be good if JT3 could have stayed out of it. On the other hand, we are talking about his brother. If you felt your younger brother was not treated fairly, wouldn't most on this board want to help? The whole situation seems very odd. Didn't they have any inkling about the entire situation at Ball St. before Ronny got involved? I don't know anything at all about Ball St. or their side of the story, but as a long time Hoya fan I know a lot about the Thompsons. And I put a lot of faith in what they say. I hope this works out OK for everyone involved.

Since I don't think I'm violating any confidences of Phil Mushnick (he doesn't know me and I just asked him why he wrote what he did in the paper), here is exactly what he told me:
"Believe me, brother, I did not write that without some behind-the-scenes, off-the-record knowledge of what inspired Westwood One execs to agree to Thompson's request to work his son's games. No one wants to incur Thompson's wrath at the risk of being called a racist. And he STILL reflexively makes such claims."
So when Ronny's situation in Ball State fell apart with accompanying charges of racism, it made me uncomfortable. I hoped then (and I still do) that the Thompsons have a great collection of evidence. Short of that, this type of situation just seems to me destined to end ugly. I just wanted to pass along what I was told for whatever it is worth.

And having said that, while I trust JTIII implicitly and have to believe that Pops truly believes in what he says and does, Ronny has always made me leery, based on everything I've heard. It's no surprise that his family would close ranks behind him, but this is not a fight we want Georgetown involved in.

Somehow I suspect that GU is keeping an eye on this in any case -- I can't help wondering whether some in the administration see it as a preview of the heartburn they might be in for if they don't play ball on JTIII's contract.

If they don't play ball on JTIII's contract, accusations of racism (aside from being baseless) would be the least of their worries. People from the talkboard chaining themselves to DeGioia's desk until the school gives in would probably be more pressing.

That assumes that DeGioia still has a desk and an office at Georgetown if he screws up III's contract.

Today on Chat House:
Bethesda, Md.: Have you read Jason Whitlock's column on the Ball State/Ronny Thompson issue. He mentions the column that you wrote last week. I consider both you and Whitlock to be two of the best in the business and enjoyed reading your differing views on the ongoing situation. Do you have any further comment?
Michael Wilbon: Jason is still my friend, and we see this issue diffently, which is okay. I called Jason before I wrote and tol him what I was writing, and he did the same...called me the night before. People can disagree and still be good friends...It ain't the first time and won't be the last.

Sorry for the clutter (I linked this in the parallel thread in P&C Sports), but someone very clearly is not friends with Mr. Whitlock: www.chicagosportsreview.com/inthemeantime/contentview.asp?c=199514

None of this stuff really has anything to do with GU basketball(and it is a stretch to try and make it so), so why is it back on this board again?

Snake just wore the shirt for Middlebury - there's no indication he actually went there. In "22 Short Films about Springfield", Snake is wearing a Middlebury shirt. That's it. I have MIT sweatpants from a time I went to a conference in Cambridge and forgot to bring some, but I didn't go there.
In Treehouse of Horror IX, Snake is referred to as playing lacrosse at Ball State University right before he gets the electric chair. However, the Treehouse episodes are non-canonical (Burns is not actually a vampire, the Simpsons do not have a virus that turns their skin inside-out).
So, bottom line, where Snake went to college has never been conclusively answered.
Yes, I am a major dork.

None of this stuff really has anything to do with GU basketball(and it is a stretch to try and make it so) Georgetown owes the wrong end of a home-and-home next season (with a six-figure buyout) that no sane Big East AD would have guaranteed were it not for the fact their head coach's brother was, at the time, head coach at the opposing school. Georgetown gains nothing by going Ball State next season. It's a mediocre program with no recruiting relevance to Georgetown. It's a program in shambles that will likely be in the 200+ RPI range. And our team is going on the (considerable) road to play them. If that's a stretch, you should try yoga.
