Kind of astonishing that's the first time they've ever beaten St. John's in the BET.

With Seton Hall falling in their regular season finale, the Hoyas lock up the #6 seed in the tournament and are rewarded with an opening game against hapless Xavier. Getting to 20 wins will indeed be a remarkable achievement under the circumstances.

Kind of remarkable that there's only 5 Big East men's swimming programs (and 7 women's), but whatever, rings are rings

It's certainly nowhere near the top of most important things to grapple with in this situation, and it almost seems trivial to spend any time on it while Ukrainians continue dying under a brutal, unprovoked, and craven assault, but... Those who subscribe to liberal values are going to have to figure out how to deal with this sort of evil that has active or tacit mass consent without resorting to blanket, tip-toeing-up-to-essentialist sentiments like "No culture on earth embraces slavery like Russians do. It's quite incredible what they allow to be done to them." Wars of aggression do little to cultivate liberal attitudes toward the aggressors - quite the opposite. That's one of many, many reasons why you shouldn't launch wars of aggression! So the blame for this, too, largely falls on the Russian state and those who prop it up. But it's on us to not allow our own humanism to be warped by evil humans. That's important not just from an ethical, moral, philosophical, etc. standpoint, but also from a practical analytics one. You're going to find your perceptions of the situation and possible ways out of it badly skewed if you think that Russians are some hapless slave race.

University employees still pay payroll taxes to the District. Moreover, non-educational uses still subject to regular taxation, so for example the coffee shop and restaurant in the JHU Newseum building generates sales and restaurant taxes. Of course employees pay taxes and employers pay FICA and Medicare taxes. But the entities don't pay income tax. That's all. Embassies don't pay property taxes, but if their employees go out to eat in DC they still pay sales tax. But it isn't the same as a private entity. That's all. I would note that as a Professor at Hopkins who teaches regularly at 555 (the old Newseum), to date the building is empty most of the time and is poorly designed (too many classes not enough classrooms). The library is open with one tiny room of books, and if the building gets busier, it will be very noisy there. Also no faculty offices. The Newseum was run by the Freedom Forum, which is a 501(c)(3), so it wasn't generating income tax anyway. Which is fine, I think. Whether the new owner serves as a bigger moneymaker than the old one is an open question, but neither were negligible, even given their respective non-profit statuses. What you say about the interior layout doesn't surprise me one bit, given what I recall of the Newseum layout. I suspect the equilibrium will ultimately be found through more "the city is your classroom!" experiential instruction.

Haven't seen the plan, but given Hopkins just opened up its new building at the Newseum and Georgetown's ongoing construction at the NJ avenue corridor, this movement to an area anchored by universities is already happening. Of course, none of the schools pay taxes because of their tax status. University employees still pay payroll taxes to the District. Moreover, non-educational uses still subject to regular taxation, so for example the coffee shop and restaurant in the JHU Newseum building generates sales and restaurant taxes.

Good. The argument that arriving at a shared calculation for financial need constituted an antitrust violation is preposterous... especially when you're talking about non-profits. Might as well just say the FAFSA is illegal...except DoEd created it for exactly this use. To my understanding the anti trust violations weren’t an issue with the shared calculation if they are 100% need blind, I think that’s what the argument is. They peeked and got caught allegedly at least with some students. I imagine it might get brought up the gray area of need aware in the sense of yeah a kid who sails, lives in Greenwich CT and goes to an academy is far more likely to have little to no need and what deliberately extrapolating from that info might mean. I would note that while the legal argument being made was that taking into account donations, legacy status, etc. constitutes not being need-blind (which is a disingenuous argument), the rhetoric coming from the plaintiffs was all about collusion and using the formula to lowball financial aid, which is a lie. www.insidehighered.com/news/students/financial-aid/2024/01/23/more-institutions-settle-financial-aid-antitrust-lawsuit
