Horrible foul call at the end of the Kansas/Samford game, but hey, we can't have both Kansas and Kentucky lose on Thursday night of the first weekend.

With a reported $33 million payment due to Calipari if UK wants to terminate the contract...they'd have to be really aggrieved to be willing to swallow that type of buyout.

Kentucky basketball, once again, proving that it is a fraud. Another early exit for John Calipari and the Wildcats.

Shocked that the Big East Conference only earned three entrants in the NCAA tournament this year. St. John’s, Seton Hall and (yes) Providence all deserved bids. I don’t believe that the bottom of the conference (Georgetown and DePaul) could have dragged down these schools to that effect. I expect that Connecticut, Marquette and Creighton will represent the conference well…but there should have been more.
Connecticut enters March Madness as the #1 seed, and the #1 team in the Associated Press Top 25. The Huskies wrapped up their 31-3 season with a Big East Conference Tournament championship in New York City NY with victories over Xavier (87-60), St John’s (95-90) and then-#1- ranked Marquette (73-57), and moved into the top spot from #2. Houston fell from #1 to #2 after the 30-4 Cougars dropped the finale in the Big 12 Conference Tournament in Kansas City MO to then-#7 ranked Iowa State (69-41), following wins over Texas Christian (60-45) and then-#25 Texas Tech (82-59). Purdue held the #3 spot once again, after the 29-4 Boilermakers fell in the Big Ten Conference Tournament semifinals against then-unranked Wisconsin (76-75) subsequent to a 67-62 win over Michigan State. Iowa State moved up three slots, from #7 to #4, with a Big 12 Conference Tournament title in Kansas City MO after victories over Kansas State (76-57), #14 Baylor (76-62) and then-#1 Houston (69-41), improving the Cyclones’ record to 27-7. North Carolina dropped one spot, from #4 to #5, after the 27-7 Tar Heels were beaten by eventual Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament champion North Carolina State (84-76) in the semifinal round, subsequent to wins over Florida State (92-67) and Pittsburgh (72-65).
The Big East Conference finished with only three ranked schools, continuing the pattern that developed during the season. Marquette moved up two slots, from #10 to #8, after the 25-9 Golden Eagles defeated Villanova (71-65, in overtime) and Providence (79-68) before falling to then-#2 ranked Connecticut (73-57) in the Big East Conference Tournament finals in New York City NY. Creighton fell three spots, from #8 to #11, after the 23-9 Bluejays lost in the Big East Conference Tournament quarterfinals against unranked Providence (78-73). No other Big East Conference schools received any votes in this week’s polls, which also reflects (perhaps) why no other Big East Conference schools received invitations to the NCAA Tournament.
Saint Mary’s had the largest jump in this week’s AP Top 25 amongst ranks teams, moving up six slots from #21 to #15 after the 26-7 Gaels captured the West Coast Conference Tournament in Las Vegas with victories over Santa Clara, 79-65, and then-#17 ranked Gonzaga, 69-60. Four teams fell three spots in this week’s polls, equalling the largest drops. Arizona fell from #6 to #9 after the 25-8 Wildcats lost in the Pacific 12 Conference Tournament semifinal round to unranked Oregon (67-59) subsequent to a 70-49 victory over Southern California; Creighton (as noted above) fell from #8 to #11; Kentucky fell from #9 to #12 after the 23-9 Wildcats lost in the Southeastern Conference Tournament quarterfinal round in Nashville TB to unranked Texas A&M, 97-87; Washington State fell from #22 to #25 after the 24-9 Cougars lost to Colorado (58-52) in the Pacific 12 Conference semifinal round in Las Vegas NV subsequent to a 79-62 victory over Stanford.
Wisconsin and San Diego State returned to the AP Top 25 this week; the Badgers improved their record to 22-13 with victories over Maryland (87-56), Northwestern (70-61) and #3 Purdue (76-75, in overtime) in the Big Ten Conference Tournament in Minneapolis MN before losing in the final to then-#12 ranked Illinois (93-87) to claim #23 in the polls, while the 24-10 Aztecs moved to #24 in the rankings with wins over Nevada Las Vegas (74-71, in overtime) and then-#18 ranked Utah State (86-70) before losing in the Mountain West Conference Tournament championship game to unranked New Mexico (68-61) in Las Vegas NV. They replaced Nevada (formerly #23) and Dayton (#24) in the AP Top 25; the 26-7 Wolf Pack’s one week stay in the rankings ended with an 85-78 loss to unranked Colorado State in the Mountain West Conference quarterfinals in Las Vegas NV, and the 24-7 Flyers lost to unranked and eventual Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament champion Duquesne (65-57) in Atlantic City NJ.

Newly added information is in bold. Current and former Big East Conference head coaches are indicated in italics. Open Division I head coaching positions are indicated by underline. There are presently 25 Division I coaching vacancies.
BRYANT (America East)-- Jared Grasso (5 years, and entering his 6th season; 17-13 in the 2022-2023 season; 79-67 at Bryant and overall) took a leave of absence from his position as head coach on September 29, 2023 for unspecified reasons, and was replaced as head coach on an interim basis September 29, 2023 by Phil Martelli, Jr. (associate head coach at Bryant). Grasso was thereafter arrested by Smithfield RI police on October 1, 2023 and charged with "Failure to Stop for Accident Resulting in Damage to Vehicle," and is scheduled for arraignment on October 24, 2023; this incident appears to be unrelated to the circumstances underlying Grasso's leave of absence. Grasso entered a "not guilty" plea on October 31, 2023, and was released on a $1,000.00 personal recognizance bond. The charges were dismissed by prosecutors on November 7, 2023, although Grasso remained on leave. Grasso resigned as head coach on November 13, 2023, and Martelli Jr. was named head coach on November 14, 2023; no terms of compensation nor contract specifications were announced by Bryant. CALIFORNIA POLYTECHNIC STATE (Big West)-- John Smith (5 years; 4-25 this season; 29-112 at Cal Poly and overall) was fired March 1, 2024, effective at the end of the season. CALIFORNIA STATE FRESNO (Mountain West)-- Justin Hutson (6 years; 12-21 this season; 92-94 at Fresno and overall) announced March 14, 2024 that he and the university had jointly agreed that he would not return as head c oach after the expiration of his contract in April 2024. CALIFORNIA STATE LONG BEACH (Big West)-- Dan Monson (17 years; 18-14 this season; 272-272 at the Beach; 442-395 overall) and the university jointly announced March 11, 2024 that they agreed to "mutually part ways" effective at the end of the season. TEXAS SAN ANTONIO (American)-- Steve Henson (8 years; 11-21 this season; 110-144 at UTSA and overall) was fired March 14, 2024, and was replaced as head coach March 17, 2024 by Austin Claunch (assistant coach at Alabama and former head coach at Nicholls State). Claunch agreed to a five-year contract through the 2028-2029 season with guaranteed compensation in the amount of $2.75 million; no other contract specifications were disclosed by UTSA. VANDERBILT (Southeastern)-- Jerry Stackhouse (5 years; 9-23 this season; 70-92 at Vandy and overall) was fired March 14, 2024. WASHINGTON (Pacific 12)-- Mike Hopkins (7 years; 17-14 this season; 118-105 at UW; 122-110 overall) was fired March 8, 2024, effective at the end of the 2023-2024 season. WEST VIRGINIA (Big 12)-- Bob Huggins (16 years; 19-15 in the 2022-2023 season; 343-203 at WVU; 934-415 overall) signed an amended contract May 10, 2023, which reduced his annual compensation from $4.2 million to $3.2 million, and further imposed a three-game suspension and sensitivity training after Huggins was interviewed on Cincinnati radio station WLW on May 8, 2023 and discussed an incident when he recalled "rubber Editedes" being thrown onto the court during a Crosstown Shootout game between Cincinnati and Xavier, further saying "[w]hat it was, was all those f*gs, those Catholic f*gs, I think." The amended contract provided for a year-by-year agreement beginning May 10, 2023 and expiring April 30, 2024, and reportedly WVU's administration made it explicitly clear to Huggins that any incidents of "similar offensive and derogatory language will result in immediate termination." Huggins was thereafter arrested in Pittsburgh PA on charges of driving under the influence on June 16, 2023, and was released on his own recognizance pending further appearance at a preliminary hearing on a date to be determined. Huggins resigned as head coach June 17, 2023 after meeting with members of the WVU basketball team, announcing his intention to retire, and was replaced as head coach on an interim basis for the 2023-2024 season on June 24, 2023 by Josh Eilert (assistant coach at WVU); no terms of compensation were announced by WVU. WVU announced on March 13, 2024 that it had advised Eilert (1 year; 9-23 this season, at WVU and overall) that it would proceed with forming a national search committee to find a new head coach for the 2024-2025 season. WESTERN CAROLINA (Southern)-- Justin Gray (3 years; 22-10 this season; 51-47 at WCU and overall) resigned March 11, 2024 to accept the head coaching position at Coastal Carolina. WILLIAM & MARY (Coastal)-- Dane Fischer (5 years; 10-23 this season; 56-91 at W&M and overall) was fired March 10, 2024.

After spending the last three days at the Big East Tournament, it's apparent that the Hoyas are a long, long way away from being competitive as early as next season. Connecticut, St. John's and Marquette are all at a present level of play to which we should aspire, but not expect, in the next year.
This program plummeted under our former head coach, and it is going to take Ed Cooley longer than we (and he, probably as well) thought one year ago when he was hired. We need to show great improvement next season; that does not necessarily equate to being fully competitive in the 2024-2025 season. Maybe learning how to win some of those tight games down the stretch and hitting foul shots is the best we can hope to see next season.
