No change atop the Associated Press Top 25, as Gonzaga remained ranked #1 after wins over Brigham Young (86-69) and at Portland (116-88); the Bulldogs improved to 12-0 for the season. Baylor continued to be ranked #2, as the Bears won against Oklahoma (76-61) and at Texas Christian (67-49); Villanova remained #3 despite not pausing competition for the week due to COVID-19; Texas continued to be ranked #4 after the Longhorns defeated Iowa State (78-72) and then-#14 ranked West Virginia on the road (72-70); Iowa remained #5 after winning at Maryland (89-67) and against then-#16 ranked Minnesota (86-71). Clemson was the biggest gainer amongst ranked teams, advancing seven spots to #12 with an overtime win against North Carolina State (74-70) before pausing competition due to COVID-19 and postponing a game scheduled at North Carolina. Rutgers had the largest drop amongst ranked teams, plummeting from #15 to unranked after the Scarlet Knights’ losing streak stretched to three games with losses at then-#23 ranked Michigan State (68-45) and against then-unranked Ohio State (79-68).
Creighton fell one slot to #8, after the Bluejays defeated Seton Hall (89-53) and St. John’s (97-79), and Connecticut became the third Big East Conference team ranked in the AP Top 25 after the Huskies notched road wins at Marquette (65-54) and Butler (72-60). Xavier was the only other Big East Conference school to receive any votes in this week’s poll.
In addition to Rutgers, Michigan State (formerly ranked in a tie for #23) and Florida State (formerly ranked #25) also fell out of the AP Top 25. The Spartans were beaten by unranked Purdue 55-54 after defeating Rutgers, while the Seminoles had their lone scheduled game at Pittsburgh postponed due to COVID-19 protocols. Returning to the rankings, in addition to UConn, are Louisville (now ranked #16) and Ohio State (now ranked #21); the Cardinals defeated then-#19 ranked Virginia Polytechnic Institute (73-71) and had a scheduled game against Georgia Institute of Technology postponed after the Yellow Jackets paused competition due to COVID-19, and the Buckeyes defeated Rutgers while also having a scheduled game against Pennsylvania State also postponed after the Nittany Lions paused competition due to COVID-19.

Game's start time has just been changed. Game has been rescheduled to Saturday, at 7:00 pm (instead of 8:00 pm), and will now be on ESPN instead of ESPN 2. Change necessitated by postponement of Clemson at North Carolina game (Clemson has now paused competition due to COVID-19), and opening of television slot on ESPN.

In my opinion, the bar is set low...I just want to see improvement, week by week, in the play of what will be a very young team.

The Philly Phanatic's favorite foil (or is that Phavorite Phoil)...a wonderfully enthusiastic ambassador for the game. As a Mets fan, I couldn't stand him, but I sure did respect him. Requiescat in pace, Mr. Dodger Blue.

Once again, no change atop the Associated Press Top 25, as Gonzaga received 63 out of 64 first place ballots un this week’s poll. The ‘Zags easily defeated Northern Arizona (88-58), Dixie State (112-67) and San Francisco (85-62), improving their record to 10-0. Baylor retained the #2 slot once again, with the Bears winning against Central Arkansas (93-56), Alcorn State (105-76), and at Iowa State (76-65). There was some shuffling in the balance of the top five, with Villanova advancing one slot to #3, Texas jumping four slots to #4, and Iowa moving up five slots to #5; the Wildcats did not play after pausing competition due to COVID-19 and postponing scheduled games against St. John’s and Xavier (and the Wildcats have now, again, paused competition due to COVID-19), the Longhorns won at then-#3 ranked Kansas (84-59) and had a scheduled game against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi canceled due to COVID-19, and the Hawkeyes defeated then-#19 ranked Northwestern (87-72) and won at then-#14 ranked Rutgers (77-75).
Michigan was the biggest gainer amongst ranked teams this week, moving up six slots to #10 after winning at Maryland (84-73) and against then-#19 ranked Northwestern (85-66); Florida State dropped the furthest amongst still-ranked teams, falling seven slots to #25 after losing at then-unranked Clemson (77-67) and having a scheduled game against then-#20 ranked Duke postponed due to COVID-19 exposures in the Blue Devils’ program.
Northwestern (formerly ranked #19) and Ohio State (formerly ranked #25) both fell out of the AP Top 25; the Wildcats lost both scheduled games at then-#10 ranked Iowa and then-16 ranked Michigan, and the Buckeyes defeated Nebraska (90-54) and lost at then-#21 ranked Minnesota (77-60). Clemson and Saint Louis are now in the AP Top 25; the Tigers are now ranked in a tie for #19 after following up their win over then-#18 ranked Florida State with a 66-65 win at Miami (Florida), and the Billikens are now ranked in a tie for #23 without even playing after having games against Duquesne and Massachusetts postponed due to COVID-19.
There are again just two Big East Conference school ranked in the Top 25, with Villanova at #3 and Creighton moving up four slots to #7 after a 67-65 win at Providence. Three other Big East schools (Seton Hall, Xavier and Connecticut) also received votes in this week’s polls.
The following conferences have programs that have currently been shut down, or paused temporarily, due to COVID-19: Big East Conference: #3 Villanova. America East Conference: New York Stony Brook. American Athletic Conference: Temple (temporary pause ended January 8). Atlantic Coast Conference: #19(tie) Clemson, Georgia Institute of Technology, Pittsburgh (temporary pause ended January 5). Atlantic Sun Conference: Florida Gulf Coast, North Florida (temporary pause ended January 8). Atlantic 10 Conference: George Washington (temporary pause ended January 9), #23(tie) Saint Louis. Big Sky Conference: Eastern Washington (temporary pause ended January 10). Big South Conference: Presbyterian (temporary pause ended January 11). If we play the freshmen, do we even have a lead to blow? In what is fast becoming another lost season, at least the freshmen can gain game experience that can benefit the team in the future. What are the freshmen learning by watching upperclassmen play in the manner they are playing, with no regard for a future season?

I wish Rockhoya was still here to explain why this was actually a great job by Ewing. He deleted his posts all the way to October... Aren't those supposed to be archived, like Presidential records?

It’s definitely in these opposing big east coaches best interests to keep our coach in place. It must feel like a miracle to see Georgetown just destroying its team like this. All of them know that GU should be a much bigger threat but that we’ll never be as long as this regime is in place. The only question left is if this can ever be salvaged. Next year is just fools gold unless we have new coaches. We're not going to have a new coaching staff next season. Thinking it might happen is wasted energy. And if Patrick Ewing's seat is not getting warm next season, that will tell us all we need to know about how Healy Hall views the importance of having a winning basketball team.

Looking forward to the obligatory comment from the other coach praising the job Ewing is doing. Wojo did that sorta in the obligatory post-game on CBSSN. Sort of like every team that the Jets played this season complimenting the solid job that Adam Gase did.

You saw them today. The adjustments are just bad. What adjustment we were winning by 16 points !!!!!. Again we do not have a good team. Not saying that we have a good team...but one has to anticipate the adjustments that are being made in the other locker room. You expected they'd simply jog around for twenty more minutes, take the L and jet back on a later flight to MKE?

To be clear, “the team” definitely does not include the coaching staff. Anyone who watches Bile play, and thinks that he can provide something that no other player on the team can provide, has never heard that insanity has been defined as making the same decision over and over and expecting a different outcome.

Can't believe how many folks give the players a pass. Ewing is not the best coach around, but so many players on this team are gutless. Bonehead plays one after another. Can't even make simple passes, close out on a shooter, hang onto the ball while driving the lane, etc. Shouldn't need the coach to tell you how to do those things. I'm not sure anyone is giving the players a pass here. Candidly, there's more than enough blame to go around.
