First, the coach kevin situation, then joey brown, and now the local sports talk show is harping on how underpaid coach is and how "loyalty can only go so far." How many da*n distractions are we gonna have before saturday? ??

You are right, this is an unwelcome distraction. But to answer your question, yes, he is.

Yes! They should renogotiate TODAY pay the man $1.5 to $2M per year for the next 10 years and a signing bonus of $.5M to make up for being underpaid this year. End this distraction, secure the future.
It would be UNFORGIVABLE if they lose him. Absolutely unforgivable.

Give him whatever he wants. He's earned it. Let's make him a Hoya for the next 20 years.

Practical question: How can fans earmark donations specifically to go to JTIII's salary?

First thing DeGioa should have done as JTIII got off that bus was hand him a new paycheck with six zeros on it

He was NOT worth more than $450k when he was offered the opportunity to coach in the Big East coming out of the Ivy League and never having won an NCAA tournament. He has earned a raise and deserves it now, but nobody should feel bad about his salary the past 3 years and what has turned out to be a huge win-win situation for JTIII and the program/fans/school.

I know his contract was posted on USA Today (?) recently, but I spend too much time looking at contracts as it is to do the research. Do we know there are not significant escalators in his current contract?

JJL,
We don't know the other aspects of the contract. In fact, I recall from the USA Today article that other than the base salary, no other information was given about his contract (such information was given for many of the other coaches listed), so there can certainly be escalator clauses, as well as various bonuses, that we are not aware of.

$3 for ribs? Now how many ribs do I get with that? 5 Ribs? I'll take one rib. Now how much for a coke? One dollar? How about you just pour a little in my mouth. Have change for a $100?

Salary is irrelevent in contracts for coaches. Bobby Knight gets $250K in base salary and make A LOT more than that.
the real money is in Nike deals, tv and radio shows. Also, keeping the money from camps etc. in the summer. In addition, other schools various "hoop clubs" basically directly pay the coach. I hate that because it makes the coach somewhat beholdent to the boosters, but it's the way it happens at some schools.
No one knows what his "real" all in compensation is so throwing around $450k is shortsighted.
We are a private school and thus don't have to disclose all of this information.
JTIII really wants an on campus state of the art practice facility or an on campus arena. That's what he's pushing for at this point.

this thread should be locked/deleted imo. there is nothing worse than people whispering in your ear about how you are getting underpaid, etc. to make you feel bad, angry, etc. when its totally unneccessary. this issue, if there even is one, is between iii and muir and degioia. leave it with them. iii can take care of himself.
if fans want to sound off and support iii, write an email or letter to degioia to voice your support. you probably mean well, but talk like this unneccessarily sows the seeds of dissension (see othello, shakespeare knew something about human nature) and is totally destructive. i speak from years of experience and knowledge exactly on this point and i have seen a number of careers and relationships needlessly damaged by this very thing.

Anyone at all worried about the Kentucky job being open? People have been talking about JT III going there. Really hope not. Any other rumors on who is going to get the Kentucky job?

Guys, it's time. Time to pay the man.
Maybe not the market rate but certainly more than now.
And time to build the darn on-campus facility. He has said that's what it will take to keep him. So build the building already- it's time.
It's time.

Camille was just on JTII's show, and JTII made an alarming number of comments about whether JTIII should consider other opportunities. She also mentioned the Kentucky job.
In my opinion, after seeing what happened to Tubby Smith, I'm not sure how attractive the Kentucky job would be. I'm not sure that I want to stir the pot, but I wonder if Coach Smith had a different skin color (which, if you've noticed, JTIII does not), he might have been treated better.

Listenign to Big John and the questions that he posed to Camille it certainly seems that Pops will be counseling JTIII to consider all offers. He stated that there is a danger in viewing him as a lifer at the Hilltop.

well, he made Camille state it technically, but she did so plainly and simply - treat him as a lifer at your own peril

That's just posturing. JT will leak as much info as he can to try and get JT3 a fair contract. JT3 had a hard enough time leaving Princeton. All he wants is to be paid what he's worth and right now that's alot more than 450k.

There is no way JT3 makes just base salary; that would be scandalous in its own right.
For example, RU's FB coach Greg Schiano (sorry, I am from Jersey) makes less than a 1/3 of his total compensation in base salary compared to all the "money from private sources", perks and performance incentives. Now I know this is not football, so the scale is not the same, but there is no reason to believe JT3 does not have the common perks and escalators as everyone else.
It is hard enough to get public universities to release this information, how hard must it be to get a notoriously secretive University like Georgetown to publish it?. There is no positive outcome for DeGioia to make this stuff public except to cause outrage among the hardcore academic community or evoke other criticism.
I am sure JT3 is or will be taken care of, there are plenty of well-to-do Georgetown alumni that enjoy having a basketball team to follow in March and brag about to fellow Dukies and Ivies. All DeGioia has to do is ask. It would be naive to think otherwise.
Of course JT3 is worth more than his published salary and of course his dad is going to be posturing for his son! He should, if they are really just paying him $450K he should walk and I should cry.
