a number of years back, a friend of mine and i tried to scalp tix for a knicks game on mlk day. these 2 cops run across 8th like we're mugging the scalper. they threatened to arrest us even though we were paying face value. it was ridiculous.

Considering the midterms most people have this and next week, I really hope people don't take lic's advice before Thursday. It's rather tough to skip classes this week, at least for me. One thing I commend the ath. dept. for is letting you have someone else stand in line for you in case you do have a midterm and can't stand in line yourself. I believe that they did not allow this last year, which was very user UNfriendly.

I was always under the impression that it isn't scalping if the price paid for the ticket was at face value or below...I've purchased numerous tickets inside and right in front of the Garden with no police altercation.
Usually, I just get tickets via stub hub or Craig's list, or someone on this board to the first session the Hoyas will be playing in. From there, I just seek out the fans of losing teams (often our own opponents) and buy their tickets for the next session at face value. The only exception to paying face value may come in trying to get BE Finals tickets, but, considering that the Hoyas haven't made the finals in a while, I've never run into that issue.
**I'll also use this opportunity to pander for opening round tix...If anyone has 2 extra tickets to the first session the Hoyas play in, please PM me. Thanks.**

The exception is usually the semifinals -- tickets for the finals are usually all over the place and much easier to get than for the Finals.

Just took some time to look this up, for anyone interested:
YOU COULD STAND AT CENTER COURT AND OFFER TO SELL OR BUY TICKETS, IN PLAIN VIEW OF LAW ENFORCEMENT, so long as you are not or are not attempting to violate state scalping law.
Keep your purchases or sales to face value + ($5 or 10%, whichever is greater), and you are not in violation of the law.
Just wanted to make sure that readers on the board aren't too timid to go out there and buy tickets at or during the tournament. We need as many Hoyas in the seats as possible!

I never get emails the Athletic Dept sends out....What does the email exactly say about having someone get your ticket for you? Can I have someone who is in line for tickets get mine too? Cause most of my friends who would ever do this for me would want tickets as well.

Cause most of my friends who would ever do this for me would want tickets as well. Here's what it says: A student MAY stand in line for someone else if they are not purchasing a ticket for themselves. HOWEVER, they must have that persons ID and he/she MUST be the person who will be in New York to redeem the ticket. (ID must match the person on the list picking up the ticket at Madison Square Garden for EACH game).

So I take it that one person can't buy more than one ticket?

correct. here is the full text of the e-mail:
Student BIG EAST Tournament tickets will go on sale to Student Season Ticket holders this Friday, February 23rd at 10:00 am for $40 (CASH ONLY) at the McDonough Arena Box Office. These tickets are good for the Georgetown Sessions only. Once again, the BIG EAST has allotted a VERY limited number of tickets for our students. You can only purchase one ticket per person.
A student MAY stand in line for someone else if they are not purchasing a ticket for themselves. HOWEVER, they must have that persons ID and he/she MUST be the person who will be in New York to redeem the ticket. (ID must match the person on the list picking up the ticket at Madison Square Garden for EACH game).
If Georgetown does not play in all four games, you will be refunded $10 per unplayed game. Refunds will begin on April 2nd at the McDonough Box Office from 1:00-5:30 and it is up to the ticket holder to initiate the refund.

You MUST be careful in front of MSG. In fact, I was actually "arrested" for simply asking a student how much he wanted for a ticket. An undercover cop overheard our conversation and busted both of us. The tickets were below face value and I offered no indication at all that I would buy the seats. I will also reiterate that this was simply overheard by a cop.
The charges were thrown out, but I did have to appear in court. The courtroom that day was filled with people busted the same day. This included people that had to fly back in from Florida (U of Miami) and Pittsburgh.
Bottom line - BE CAREFUL. All of SirSaxa's advice is spot on. Try local bars. Do not do anything in front of MSG.
My addition to this discussion is that you can even be busted for simply asking a seller how much they want.

The Georgetown athletic dept. also has a hospitality room at their hotel base during the tournament--usually the Southgate Hotel about 1/2 a block up from the Garden. They will sell tickets they get from other schools as they become available at face value.
I hope to see everyone up in NYC for the tournament!

yeah, i'm having trouble gauging what "LIMITED" tickets amounts to while simultaneously trying to figure out how many people are going to be interested in these tickets and calculating those two elements into the number of hours i'm prepared to wait on line for these babies.
anybody know how many tickets will be available?
