Wow! One "Hillbilly" comment and we had the makings of a true contender!!
As for my use of "hillbilly" -- that is a gross generalization that comes from having season tickets for 5 or 6 years (not sure which), and being a die hard fan (front row kinda guy, back in the Cap Centre days) during my undergrad days, and seeing the wave of hillbillies that would invade the Cap Center, then the VZ center whenever WVU came to town. Sorry if it offended anyone. And if it did, I will leave you with this bit of wisdom that might help you in Morgantown -- if your best friend tells you your sister is the best french-kisser in the county, the right answer is to punch him in the mouth, not "I know!!"

Getting back on track, attendance predictions for the rest of this year's home games:
2/10 Marquette: 18-20K 2/12 West VA: 12-14K 2/24 Pitt: 18-20K 3/3 UConn: 16-18K
So, taking the middle number from each prediction, my estimate for our final average attendance for the season is 10,272, which would be a slight decrease from our 10,352 clip from last year. However, that also includes two McDonough games instead of one, as well as a Duke sellout that shot up our average.
Overall, I've been pretty pleased with attendance this year, and think the last 4 games (especially with 3 on weekends, and all good opponents or at least a decent name...cough... UConn) will all be really great atmospheres. We've come light years since the Esherick years, hell since JT III's first year. I especially like that with the increase of season ticketholders, most of the opposing fans are now confined to the upper decks.
That said, we can still improve, especially with reaching out to the local crowd. Go Muir!

Marquette will get a ton of coverage and curiosity seekers etc. will be there. to fill it up. Plus Marquette as a b-ball name has a buzz to it still I think. WVA should be easily that b/c of their fans and also b/c for the past couple years they've been ranked and the local fans of ours usually show up for opponents that in their mind are strong. Pitt with their team leading the BE will draw our fans and their fans and get good coverage in the Post. Uconn I bet a lot of local fans bought tix early in the season for this one before it turned out Uconn wasn't great, and they have a big fan base. Should be easy to hit those numbers. And the fact our record is looking strong will help.

To take us back off track, as a rider and one who has cared for horses that have foundered, I too, was sad when Barbaro had to be put down. I was not surprised that it happened, however. Sigh! I could use a milkshake.

Does anyone remember DePaul attendance? i want to say it was about 13k, in which case the 'neers will be far higher than suggested here.
The Hoyas are a hot ticket!

If these predictions are even close to accurate, Hoya fans across the District must be all wondering: How will the already crowded metro system handle such crowds!?

As per the stats page on GUHoyas.com, attendance for the DePaul game was 9,315, so not quite. guhoyas.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/stats/2006-2007/teamcume.html

I think people are overestimating WVU. Yes, WVU will have a big presence, but 1) They aren't as good this year and 2) Every GU ticket holder is definitely coming on Saturday.
I think for a lot of people two games in three days is a lot.

I also think people were way off from the beginning of the year estimates. It is going to take a number of years of dominance before we are a consistent draw. Pre-season people were overhyping our ability to draw big numbers and I think that has been proven to be false, despite a solid season to date.

Pre-season people were overhyping our ability to draw big numbers and I think that has been proven to be false, despite a solid season to date. A combination of unexciting home dates and an inability to win any of the early big games killed momentum, I think. We don't have a huge die-hard base. This is where being ranked and on sportscenter would help.

Definitely. Wishlist for next season:
1. 2 big OOC home games (probably both in November/December, since the 18 game Big East schedule is gonna be big). I don't really think Michigan fits into the "big" category, but if it were our third best game, that makes for a great home schedule. Think UCLA, Florida, UNC, etc. (though we'd probably only be able to grab one of those at home, unless we were loading the slate with those types of game).
2. Only one game at McD. I can get the novelty, and I think it's great for a WSSU-type game, but I hope that this season's ODU debacle got some people over the "dominating 2,500 seat home court advantage" bandwagon. Plus, it keeps numbers down in average attendance for the season.
Reasons for hope:
1. Excitement preseason next year should at least equal the hype for this season. (And with better reason, pending who returns).
2. The Austin Freeman - Chris Wright combo should have a solid impact in ticket sales among locals, and in local publicity in general.
3. Better base from which to grow. Season ticket sales have increased 30% or so each of the last couple years (after long years of minimal effort). I'd be shocked if the local/alumni market is totally tapped out after just two years' work, so those numbers should continue to grow.

Meh, just go get some beers after the game and wait for the crowds to die down. Also, just to clarify, I don't really care about that horse. Hop over to hoyatalk2.proboards48.com/index.cgi?board=pro&action=display&thread=1170095122&page=3 for more opinions. I'm joining Team Elmer's.
