WOW. I thought, "Hey, we've won 7 in a row, maybe this is the year." Nope. There is at least a 10% chance that our women will never beat UConn's in my lifetime.

UConn put on the brakes with about seven minutes to play.
Final: 84-26.
What's sadder than the score, is that for what is arguably one of Georgetown's "national" teams, with a budget larger than 25 other sports at GU ($1.5 million), so few fans pay any attention whatsoever. Georgetown ought to be on a national stage for women's as well as men's basketball, and games like this reinforce how distant that goal is right now.

No one is going to care until we can at least compete.

Former Coach Knapp made a women's game ticket stub worth a beer at Chadwicks for a season around 2002 if I remember correctly. Worked out well since I had to be at most women's games as is.
Still no real turn out. If free beer can't bring college kidss, nothing can.

Crapskies, I knew HB was doing something tonight for the game but I didn't realize it was UConn. Does Rutgers come to town? Notre Dame? Really wish I'd gotten to see the Lady Huskies.
How many students showed up? There was free beer for those before and after the game.

Its like men's basketball except in super slow motion and no one is good.

Despite how much money the NBA has dumped into the WNBA, not many people seem to want to watch that, and with the exception of a few enclaves the story is the same in college (UConn & Tennessee notwithstanding). Is there any reason that women's hoops is deemed a national sport? Is it merely a function of title IX so as to even out Men's basketball spending? It would seem we could put those scholarships toward another women's sport and perform slightly more competitively. According to the department of education site ( ope.ed.gov/athletics/InstDetail.asp), we spend nearly as much on women's basketball than we do on Field Hockey, Golf, Swimming, Tennis and Volleyball combined. It is the third highest budgeted sport after men's basketball and football. Given that only 10 students participate (and from reports above, about 11 care), it's seems really difficult to justify that investment based on the results. On a per player basis, we spend $32k per women's basketball player, which is more than 4 times the amount we spend per player for any other sport other than men's basketball. While the small number of players obviously affects that, I can justify the spending of $80k/player on Men's basketball, when it provides a great deal of visibility to the school that justifies the investment.

Some lowlights for the ladies: UConn attempted 64 field goals (made 33); Hoyas attempted 48 (hit just 10). You should NEVER EVER EVER shoot 16 fewer field goals than your opponent, thats unreal. UConn turned the ball over 15 times (which is kinda a lot); Hoyas 25, which is disgusting. Georgetown was outrebounded 50! to 29. We had 17 defensive rebounds, they had 22 offensive, which is just pathetic. Connecticut had 12 steals to our six. We committed 23 fouls; they were whistled for 13. Three point shooting was relatively close! Huskies were 2-of-12, Hoyas 2-of-16.
All in all, I see no way to sugar coat a miserable defeat. We CLEARLY have miles to go to be in the vicinity of a Connecticut. I don't know what we should do to improve things, I honestly have no idea, but this is ridiculous (and somewhat unfair to our other teams).
I also cannot believe I just scoured a women's basketball boxscore.

yikes. that's ugly.
As for women's basketball in general... I remember on Stephen A. Smith's show a month ago maybe (i'm not sure why I was watching...I got sucked in even though I don't like him at all) they were talking about women's sports and the guests were basically saying that we as fans we have a responsibility to watch women's sports because otherwise we are sexist or something. It was a confusing argument and they missed the main point...women's basketball is boring. Why would I watch a boring sport, much less pay for it?

I also cannot believe I just scoured a women's basketball boxscore. I cannot believe I watched the game. I was going to the bathroom at halftime and I walked past the couple newspaper/wire writers working on their stories. I glanced over one guy's story-in-progress and he'd written something like: "Meanwhile, Georgetown's first half effort was pathetic." That 25-0 run hurt...but it was preceded by a 15-3 run too I believe, so it made it 40-3 at one point. All in all...meh.

And can you imagine how awful we would feel if it had been a 40-0 run?? 40-3 is better in comparison. But I still would have preferred if it had only been a 40-4 run. And a 40-5 run would have been better than that. And I would be doing cartwheels if it had been a 40-6 run! Oh well, 40-3 it is.

I'm sorry, but this game should have been called with about 16 minutes left to go in the game due to the fight that broke out.
If I'm losing that badly, and it looks like things aren't going to turn around for us after the first 4 minutes of the 2nd half, then we're going to be fightin', Buddy!!!!
If we can't win the game, we're gonna at least win somethin'!!!

I am probably the only Board member who actually enjoys women's basketball! It will be much better for the women's game when such disparities in talent no longer exist.

The problem with women's basketball is there are no highlights unless you call a reverse layup something special.
The WNBA is the only sport I actually would advocate steroid use in.
