ok but every single other sport i can think of allows people to have any number they want even other NCAA sports true basketball is one where you have to constantly reprort numbers to the scorers table. I agree it's easier but that doesn't make it better. just use one hand for the tens digit and the other hand for the units digit and just flash the hand put up 5 first then put up 4 and since it's on the smae hand the sccorer knows that's 9. the current way may be easier but it's not like it thaaaat much harder.

The NFL doesn't allow players any number they want.
It's the rule. You're not going to change it because you think Pat "looks like an 8."

Having officiated some GU Intramural ball, I would say that it makes perfect sense to only allow #s that can be displayed with one hand. It gets too confusing for the scorer's tables otherwise. In the NBA, most tables work EVERY game & have historical rapport with officials. The same is not necessarily the case at lower levels. PLUS, in the NBA, you could feasibly have the following #s on the same roster (8, 80 17, 71, 26, 62, 35, 53, and 44). Deciphering in a loud gymnasium can be extremely difficult.
The NCAA & NFHS rules just make sense.
