Just got done re-watching the Florida game in preparation for what promises to be a pooptastic final game. But I couldn't help but get extremely excited for next season after seeing the game again. We were SO CLOSE to beating the team that is playing the best in the country, we were really working our system to near perfection, and we just looked really, really good.
With Jeff, Roy and Jon back, that's a very solid core group of players who have now been through both the Big East and the NCAA wars, and they all played well. Add in Sapp, who is just such a tough competitor, and hopefully some production from some guys who spent most of this year on the bench -- and then mix in the enthusiasm and talent of PE2 and the potential of our stud freshmen. Give this group to JT3, who is fast becoming a phenomenal coach, and we are in for quite a ride next year and beyond.
Sorry if this is redundant, but I can't remember the last time I was so excited about Hoya hoops. It's amazing to think of where we were just two short years ago - WE ARE BACK and I can't wait for Midnight Madness!!!!!

Sorry if this is redundant... I love the enthusiasm, guru. But don't we have enough "I can't wait for next year"/"Hawaii Five-Oh for Midnight Madness"/"Is It October" threads?

There can never be too much excitement and enthusiasm, who cares about clutter. Just let everyone keep making posts like these, its great to see after the disaster zone that this board was just 2 years ago.
And I completely agree with you guru!

What we need is the 3000th post where you call someone a chump or a dope. Chump. Dope. Just kidding. Every message board needs a resident grump.

I'm looking at this game and thinking, that could so easily be us up there, we were the only ones who played Florida tough all tourney.
It does make one excited, bc as disappointed as we all were following that loss, Florida's run makes us look pretty damn good.
I hope the froshes and sophs can make up for the lack of senior leadership, bc if they do- we can be dangerous next year, scary good.

I'm not being grumpy, I'm just having a hard time keeping track of all the predictions I'm making for next year! Trust me, I share your enthusiasm... I'm just not as talkboard-proficient as I wish I were. As for YB's post... thanks for bringing back the memories of that loss! The fact UF is having such an easy time with every team since G'Town makes that loss hurt even MORE! I hope our boys are watching these games, feeling as frustrated as we all are, bottle that anger, and unleash it on the galaxy next season. Next season could be the year we see the bandwagon explode...

I hope also that the SU and UF losses- close as they were, and good as those teams were against every other team- light a fire in the team's belly for next year. I hope they focus like none other and come with killer instinct next year. That's how special teams are born.

Can I be a wet blanket? No? Tough. I have to dissent on this. I do think we can be really good next year, but I think this thread outlines the issue much better: hoyatalk2.proboards48.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1144131979. Two things that have really kind of bothered me over the last week. 1) The idea that we were "2nd" in the tourney or should have won the whole thing is fun, but false. I don't doubt we could have won the whole thing. But this idea is way overboard. First, according to almost any measure, Georgetown was a Top 25 team but not a Top 10 team. Personally, I think we were Top 15, but that's neither here nor there. We were remarkably inconsistent as well, beating Duke but losing to USF. We are very vulnerable to matchup problems. Florida was ranked almost ranked #1 at one point. Pomeroy had them at #3 for the whole season and the #1 team in recent games going into the tourney. They were the hottest team in the country and a legit Top 5 team. Even had we beat them -- and we can beat anyone -- what makes anyone think we could win three more games over a week? Villanova is a matchup nightmare for us, and we're not exactly consistent. Could we have beaten Nova, Mason and UCLA? Sure? But some people are acting as if that would've happened if a jump ball had been called. It's not that easy. 2) Why did Florida win? Well, Noah and Co. were impressive down low, but Lee Humphrey was the difference maker. He got hot, and suddenly Florida was a balanced team. Now their frontcourt got even more dangerous. We contained Lee and lost by 4. Other teams didn't and got run out of the gym. Even the best frontcourts need shooters/perimeter scoring. If we had won the tourney, the difference would have been Ashanti Cook. Ashanti shot 47% from the field and 44% from three, despite attempting almost three a game. Between Ashanti and Darrell, we're losing 300 highly efficient points from three (roughly equivalent to 150 FG at 60%). That's like losing Roy from the offense (and that's only their 3's!)! But it is even worse, because it will allow defenses to collapse more on Roy and Jeff. Yes, Pat and DaJuan will likely be better shooters than Bowman was this year, and that will help. But if they aren't much better, the team next year will look a lot more like Sweetney's Hoyas than anything else. We have a chance to be vey good, but we need some players to really step up on the perimeter.

If our returning and incoming players play well, we'll be really good.
If they don't, we won't.
I believe I'm now fully qualified for a job at ESPN.

I don't think anyone is arguing that we placed a mythical "2nd" in the NCAA Tourney via our near miss against the Gators. The only point made was that we played them tough and no one else in the tourney managed to do that. There's no arguing that fact. Ashanti played great in the tournament, but was also one of the reasons for the inconsistent regular season that you cite. The team will need to replace his shooting - and three point shooting from Owens, too - but I still think we'll potentially have many more weapons next season.

Guru,
I guess I'm just trying to manage expectations for next year. There's Top 5 talk; there's people saying the next two years are our "window", there's national championship talk.
Of course that's a goal and a possibility. But here's the other reality. We were a Top 15 team this year, we lose half of our starters (3 of 6) and nearly half our production. We don't lose our best players, but we have a limited succession plan for two of those three.
I agree in some ways we may be more talented, but the team may actually be less versatile -- something incredibly important in tourney play where matchups are everything.
We had three seniors this year. Next year we'll have zero, and only three juniors. We'll be especially young in the backcourt. Are rebounding and energy going to make that all up? I dunno.
I would hate to see players and coaches criticized for not being a national title contender next year. There's a possibility, but a lot has to come together.

Hey, Florida's players are extremely young (on junior and four soph starters) and look what they did.

You took the words right out of my mouth. Adrian Moss is our only senior and at this point it looks as though our four super sophs are all coming back. We have an excellent shooter who had to take a medical redshirt as well as a strong signing class 5 deep already good to go. This was really our rebuilding year.

When the Hoyas win the NCAAs, I bet you won't find any of the posters here (no, not even our village idiot the_way) trolling around on message boards of teams we beat in the Sweet 16.

No official word yet, but the best guess is that they all stay for one more year. Taurean is simply not ready. Joakim needs more weight to compete at the next level, but the sentiment is that he is never going to grow into a "5" so he really needs to broaden his offensive skills to excel at a 4. Horford has the body, but he is a little short for an NBA center, so he too needs to develop more diverse offensive skills. Corey Brewer is the one that I would worry about most. He needs to be more consisten on his outside shot but aside from that he is ready for the NBA. He is also the one who doesn't come from money, so that could play into it. Corey's dad has had multiple health issues and I'm sure that Corey wants to provide as much for his dad as possible. But if I had to guess right now, I think because of the bonding that they have and the overall love for each other as well as the college game, I think they come back next year.
