A fair amount of our board keeps an eye, but right now we’re fighting amongst ourselves about how inappropriate the fans can be on Saturday. Are they aware of the Benedickt Akok Akok screw job? Saw that, just another reason the transfer market is ridiculous. Fact that guys can jump ship after a coach has built their whole gameplan to include you. No wonder coaches are retiring left and right. When it comes to Pierre, his camp wanted him to hit the portal, but he wanted to stay. Eventually he won out. Berry wasn’t BE level, Bynum was on the outs with Ed so he wasn’t going to follow him, and Castro is still figuring out his game so I think he wanted the stability. Floyd had already transferred once, and Ed is on record saying that he didn’t play him (or Pierre) enough as he should have, so he wouldn’t have followed regardless.

It's legit to ask why didn't any of his former players followed him or his staff members to Gtown? I get the reasons for Hopkins & Carter but what about Pierre or Castro? Or the Berry who transferred to Temple? What about them? None of them are difference makers who would have affected the course of this season whatsoever and none of them played very much under Cooley. We took Providence's entire staff with us. We took Fielder. We tried to take Dual. Why's this "legit to ask"? I guess my point is that it's reasonable to assume the players like it at PC & weren't there solely for the coach or staff. Honestly, though I'm just tired of reading posts about the players the staff would have had if not for the NCAA transfer rules. Imho Pierre would have been more effective than playing Bacote, he's a better player than RB right now as well. The staff had to leave, none of them would have been retained by English including the S&C coach

Trying to be objective here- impossible I know- but what is exactly the problem with Friar fans? Cooley left them with a strong and rebuilt program that is showing its stuff again this year without him. He stayed there 12 years! Only Joe Mullaney stayed longer with 16 years ; Saint Dave Gavitt "only" stayed 10 years; the revered Rick Barnes 7 and Peripatetic Rick a measly 2 years Sure he intimated that he wasn't going anywhere- but that was all just coach-speak for " another extension please or I may look for greener pastures". Maybe with time the Friar fans will appreciate what he has done for the program, the school and even lovely Providence, but right know they are acting like .....

It's that he was negotiating during the season, recruiting for gtown while coaching PC, put his house on the market during the season....and it went from PC looking at a possible 4 seed, to an 11 seed. And the downfall coincides with when he knew he was leaving. That's my problem with him. That's my opinion as a PC fan. Others are mad that he went to a big east school. As opposed to a different conference. But for me, it's more that he sabotaged what was shsoing up to be a really good tourney run

To be fair to them going to an in conference school is probably a big one as hard to forget about him and move on. I think Cooley would have rather gone to a different conference like the Michigan job but I really think he only took the Georgetown job because his friend, role model and mentor, the elder John Thompson last wish was for Cooley to rescue the program and save the brand and what it means to African American basketball coaches, fans and history. And so that meant he has to stay in conference since Georgetown and Providence are both in the big east.

And so that meant he has to stay in conference since Georgetown and Providence are both in the big east. That’s definitely part of it. The way we (or at least I) see it, Ed played up the hometown connection a lot. He made Providence feel wanted, in a way, like there was this bigger than life personality in our corner. And over the course of time, he made us successful & we had this sense of pride about a program that had been in the f’in depths of hell for years. Of course he talked to other schools, Michigan called, and even though they went with Howard we paid Ed more. Louisville came up, and we paid Ed more. But paying a coach who performs is part of the business. And so is a coach leaving, but I look at it this way. Divorces happen, and each person gets half and goes their separate ways. But there’s still bitterness, especially after a dozen or so years. Then to find out that the person who left you has been talking to your supposed friend down the street while you were still together and goes to live with them? Maybe it’s irrational, but there’s bitterness.

I guess the danger would be if Providence fans cross the line and anger the Providence players who still like Cooley. Such actions could cause them to leave at the end of the season for some other school or Georgetown. They could site the inappropriate atmosphere and climate at Providence as a reason for leaving and getting immediate waiver to play. Really Theres nothing to gain by crossing the line and Providence risks losing quite a bit. It's legit to ask why didn't any of his former players followed him or his staff members to Gtown? I get the reasons for Hopkins & Carter but what about Pierre or Castro? Or the Berry who transferred to Temple? I really have no interest in taking any more Providence players and I don't get the board's fascination with it. Number one, it's a pretty bad look to just poach all of the main pieces of another program, even leaving out the fact that it's a fellow conference member. Number two, the Providence team we are poaching from wasn't a great team to begin with - they were fine, and a few of their players would help. But we can find comparable players elsewhere.

They're embarrassed that their coach left for Georgetown, as it exposes their longheld inferiority complex. And they really thought Cooley would stay until he retired. The fact that they're a very bitter fanbase that thinks the entire world is against them doesn't help. It's a toxic fanbase - just that simple.

He led them to unprecedented heights for their program. No matter how many times you tell yourself this team or that team wasn't all that great - the fact remains pretty simplistic. If they didn't think he was a GREAT coach who had led their program to levels the program hadent seen in decades and reinvigorated a fanbase - then they wouldn't be this upset.

Imho Pierre would have been more effective than playing Bacote, he's a better player than RB right now as well. Bacote is here for 1 year and barely plays. Pierre would be a 3 year commitment and would want minutes.

The team wasn't an FF4 contender but they were a top-25 team for most of January & February last season. www.sports-reference.com/cbb/seasons/men/2023-polls.html
