This is good timing. They will be looking ahead to their next game against UMass Lowell.

Coach says they are expecting to have Ish back “any day now”. That would be nice.

Coach says they are expecting to have Ish back “any day now”. That would be nice. Great to hear Coach Battle talk about the chemistry that is being built and how the guys seem to pull for each other. Obviously, if asked the question, any coach is going to say something like that. But you got the sense from Coach Battle that they were excited about the way this group has come together. I think that is a big deal. It is something I expected Cooley and his staff would do. Create a culture that is about the "we" and not the "I." I also think that is very important especially this year. They will take their share of losses. You want your core group to stick around and see this thing develop in year two. And it is this culture of "we" that will help with player retention in a season that likely won't end in post-season play. Now go beat Merrimack!

I'm hoping the Hoyas get off to a great start, up by 20 at the half and Cooley starts second half in a zone with Ryan under the basket. Stay with it for at least 6-7 minutes. Let's really use these cupcake games to work on learning how to play zone and also give Ryan a chance to develop his game.

I hope Ish can play in this game to get the rust out before TCU because coming back from that game will be hard. Heard from several people that he is practicing non contact and shooting already.

Hoyas -10; O/U 140
Merrimack shoots only 26% from 3. Play decent perimeter defense, and stop the easy two pointers in the paint, we cover.

Am I right thinking that tonight's attendance will be tiny (go nuts, hoyaboya)?
8:30 pm start time in the middle of the week is just so terrible. Good news is, unlike most recent seasons, this is really the only mid-week home game that starts this late. The rest appear to be around 7 pm tipoffs. But tonight could be a spotty crowd.

Yeah, I think the attendance will be low and I agree that it's a time of day we should avoid if possible. It seems obvious that the tip time is TV-driven, with FS1 needing to slot a game into that timeslot. And until we've climbed out of the bottom of the league, tough to get much more priority for the 6:30 OOC tips.
As for attendance, one takeaway for me is that season ticket sales seem to have increased by more than 30%. While I don't know exactly how game attendance figures are calculated, I remember something about it being a mix of total tickets sold (including season tickets) plus freebies that come through the gates. With Jackson State representing our lowest attendance figure so far this season at 4,126, it's reasonable to guess that season ticket sales are a bit below 4,000 this season. That's a big increase over last season, which drew only 3,076 for the Johnnies game at home.
More than the number of fans, the fan experience is a 180 degree turnaround from last year. Hope is in the air, and people are excited about progress, as uneven as it may be. That's on the court, but also in the in-game experience, where they're clearly trying out different game emcees, different music, and a few different jumbotron sequences, trying to figure out what works and move forward from there.
It's very much a work in progress, but I'm here for it.
FWIW, just like the team is still working on improving execution of the base offense and defense, and hasn't had much opportunity to add new wrinkles yet (e.g., more zone, non-switching man-to-man), there's a very experimental feel about most of the off-court operations. It's pretty remarkable to see a ground-up rebuild on everything related to the basketball program, and I know from a number of conversations that what we see in terms of outreach/marketing this year is only a start toward the vision for fan engagement in future seasons.

That's a big increase over last season, which drew only 3,076 for the Johnnies game at home. That's hopeful but I would caution against assuming that 4,000 a game are season ticket holders. It's not supportable by the type of fans coming to games, including: 1) students, 2) various promotions in early games (first responders, DC teachers, kids, military etc.), walk-up, and complimentary tickets. If there were a solid 4,000 season tickets the lower bowl would be fairly full outside the end zones. The ticket office does all it can but it's not something the University as a whole rallies behind. Georgetown burned out the fan base for years and is hoping that winning brings them back. It doesn't always work that way.

Tickets sold and tickets used are an entirely different matter. Tonight is a tough sell foe even locals to head out to an 8:30 midweek start against a school where most people don’t know where it is and some have never heard of before.

The hangover from the past few years makes it difficult for me to anticipate any easy victory and no longer unimaginable that the Hoyas could lose these OOC games to lower ranked teams. That said, the team is both maddening to watch and enjoyable. Progress is occurring in tiny steps, but you can see it, even if the post position remains a giant hole that may not be filled this year. Cook's FT shooting is better in recent games, though still inadequate. The play of Bristol is encouraging. Love the future for Styles and Epps. The team is breaking the press with passing rather than trying to dribble through multiple defenders. For the first time in a long time the team can actually run some set plays when inbounding under our own basket.
Long way to go and hopefully I did not jinx this by mentioning progress but there are signs of the players being coached up. Now let's hope it continues tonight and we do not see another short team outrebound and outhustle the Hoyas.

Merrimack is KenPom #293, another truly horrendous squad on our schedule. kenpom.comIf we wanted fans to show up, we should schedule better opponents. Obviously, that's not a priority for those making these decisions.

Obviously, that's not a priority for those making these decisions. Nah, learning to win is more important right now. Why schedule better opponents if we don't even have a proper roster? I wonder what those posters who were saying that we didn't need more than 9 scholarship players think now.
