During the game Tuesday, it was mentioned that Ed wanted more catch and shoot opportunities for Epps. He's much more efficient on catch and shoot than off the dribble. Makes sense....we've seen 500 right handed scoop shots to the hoop that rim out this year from Epps. Plus, the hitch in his jumper has to make it more difficult to get quick jumpers off the dribble.

But he's not taking shots away from anyone that can do appreciably better that this point. Accepting that Brumbaugh's game is still limited as a freshman, who is Epps taking shots away from? Getting some backcourt help will make Epps a more complementary player as a result--until then, much like with Spears, somebody has to shoot. This isn't how basketball works. You don't simply take turns shooting the ball. You try to get the most efficient shot possible as a team. Epps often kills the efficiency of our offense, and it's not just from poor shot selection. He dribbles the life out of the ball. He doesn't pass to open teammates. And one thing that really hurts: he takes WAY too long to make decisions, causing all movement to stop. We have tons of possessions that start with decent ball movement and player movement, and then the ball gets to Epps and he hesitates and everything comes to a screeching halt. This is REALLY bad for efficiency, and it's something you basically never see in the NBA anymore, or on good college teams. Yea that is how basketball works cause someone has to take the shots and you see with RB becoming a better offensive player Epps efficiency has been going up and isn’t he the teams assist leader

On a basic level I agree with gujake above. It is also true that EPPs is a bit more efficient on paper at least as RB plays better and he has some confidence in him to share the ball occasionally. TBH both EPPS and RB tend to end up in bad positions in the offensive sets. Both may be improving a bit, but are still a long way from being centerpieces on a good team. They are both very easy to defend. None of our players are good enough at least yet to worry another team, kind of have to look at the overall team to judge real progress. It seems that Cooley obviously has written the season off a while ago and is just letting these guys run to see where they might fit in next year. I guess the alternative would be to yank the guys when they make obviously bad decisions: guess he's decided it's not worth the friction given where the overall team is.
